  • Worthless Aggregator of Paywalls and an Apple Money Grab

It’s clear that I’m not the only Apple customer who sees through this app. Having paid for the + at 9.99 a month like a sucker and still getting paywall articles pushed to the front, I canceled that waste of money and time. The free version is ridiculous as well. Dangle the headline, don’t put any icon or flag that a subscription is required to read, and waste your users’ time. It is a greedy and disrespectful, and frankly, sketchy practice. When did Apple start hating its customers so much that they thought this was a good idea? If the product owner of this app had any sense, they would provide a means for customers to filter out paywall or subscription articles. People buy into the Apple ecosystem for a reason, and rather than adding any value, reward, or benefit to that, it appears the PO behind this app chose to make the news equivalent of a sidewalk barker. I expected better.

  • Puff and Opinion Pieces… Not real News

I have read one interesting article on this app. Thats it, i really don’t like reading opinion pieces. Especially ones with unsubstantiated claims.
  • Excellent App!

I absolutely love Apple News! One of its highlighting features is its user interface. The simplistic modern design with rounded corners and animations makes the app very engaging. Another highlighting feature is its ease of use. I find the app to be very intuitive and smooth whilst browsing through pages and articles. I also love how it continuously and automatically refreshes and is thus always up to date. Although there are some ads, they don’t obstruct anything or limit the user experience. Additionally, all this doesn’t come at the cost of my user privacy. Overall, I would definitely recommend this app!

  • Propaganda, not media

I really pride myself on trying to get news and opinions from every political side, which is ostensibly what drew me to apple news, but it’s just one more propaganda machine. After years of using this app it’s very clear that one particular “side” of the political spectrum is constantly rammed down my throat… take a wild guess which one!!!

Furthermore, if I block one of these garbage heap “news” outlets then why do you constantly show blacked out versions of their articles and tell me that I’ve blocked this content, then ask me if I still want to show it? Of course I don’t - that’s the reason I went to the trouble of blocking this news source from my feed. How tacky.

Is there no one who will provide an unbiased, unweighted cross-section of national news for people who just want to be educated on current events without being told how to think? Tone it back on the propaganda apple and just give both sides “equity” in my news feed. And if I block something, don’t continue to shove it in my face.

  • Some stupid “features”

Why is my feed littered with “You blocked XXX. Show story anyway?” I blocked it because I don’t want to read it, not because I wasn’t sure if I wanted to read it or not - by all means put such a pointless option in as well, but please let us turn it off. The “Continue reading YYY” is occasionally useful, but really I’d like to turn that off too. I wonder if all the irritating features of News vanish if the paid version is used? I’m certainly not paying for the same thing. Also, why is the so much american content in the UK? Is selection done in america? Poor show Apple, a useful app made silly.

  • No longer seamless

I used to love Apple News because you didn’t have to slog through ads and struggle to load the actual things you want to read. It was seamless. It still is for probably quite a bit of the Apple news articles but despite paying for Apple news + you can’t seem to turn off being offered articles that require an additional subscription. In addition to that there are ads mixed in to articles that have no problem loading while photos or linked tweets load super slowly or not at all. I sometimes sit there and watch all the spinning circles to see if things will load while noticing the ads are immediately loaded. It’s also not uncommon for articles to talk about a specific photo yet not have that photo in the article at all. I realize some of this may be a formatting thing going from an online article to their app but come on. Apple used to be so good at getting things right and I feel like they are regressing here.

  • Could be better

I like the layout, magazine access with news+ and forced dark mode on articles when your system is set to dark mode— something that’s not a default on most news apps. The curation could use some work though. There’s a lot of things I find no interest in like entertainment news stories, and no matter how much I dislike them they are front and center (well maybe a little lower) in the feed. I feel like they curate the news so it’s less inflammatory which is good I suppose, but it also makes it less interesting. The app is a good palette cleanser if nothing else. Lots of feel good stories and in depth pieces. Oh, it also would be great if there were feature parity between the different app versions. Like being able to listen audio stories on my ipad or Mac.

  • Images too small

Dear Apple News, before you changed the size of the pictures or images and the set up in Apple. News was perfect. You have to remember that not everyone has perfect vision. My vision is not perfect I wear trifocals and I find the images much too small I have my phone set to zoom and I still find them irritatingly inadequate. I think what would be fair is allowing the reader to choose their own set up. The reason I say this is because you’re forcing small images on me and I don’t want anyone to say I am forcing large images on them. I purposely bought a larger phone iPhone promax 13 looking forward to a larger screen. Instead I find a larger screen that is packed with more images and smaller fonts causing difficulty to read. Needless to say something that I found enjoyment in it’s no longer available to me. BM

  • Not living up to expectations

It is impossible to personalise the app so that it displays topics and stories that you’re interested in. If you block a channel the app still attempts to display stories from the channel but with an irritating blank box telling you it is blocked but giving you the option to show the story! Why not show something I want to read instead? I press the suggest less icon on other stories and topics but the app relentlessly ignores this and continues to show similar stories and topics. The concept of a single app that you can set up to show articles from multiple sources is good but Apple are failing to achieve this. Not worth the money and better to have multiple apps so I can actually read the articles I want.

  • Not very intuitive to use

    1) why, when you know full well I’m in the U.K., do you insist on adding so many US based stories? Especially when one of my followed channels is my home town - I clearly don’t care about the 17 towns with the same name in the USA, so why include stories about them? Is it poor coding, or just the typical American attitude that the entire world must be interested in you?

    2) stop splitting up the channels, especially when you add new items to different instances of the same channel. I don’t want to have to scroll through 6 different sections of the same channel, and stories seen 50 times already, to find one new story buried about 20 scrolls down. Newest at the top, single section per channel. It’s obvious.

3 stop adding channel suggestions that have no obvious link to anything sensible. Just because one story I read happens to include a garden as the location of the story, doesn’t mean I want to be suggested ‘gardening’ as a channel.

Sort these out and it might be worth paying for the subscription.
