  • Wanted to love this

I don’t have a problem with paying a subscription for things and I like the format and simplicity of the app, and the ability to follow ‘channels’. Unfortunately, there are two massive flaws that make it almost useless.

Firstly, the curation is awful. You can like and dislike stories as much as you want, it won’t make any difference at all to what you get shown. There is even an option not to see content again from publications you don’t like, except that it doesn’t do anything. You will keep seeing their content even after asking not to.

But the fatal fault is the sheer number of bugs. It is almost impossible for example to read much more than a paragraph of an article before the app randomly closes the article and sends you to another one. Also as you are scrolling through the lists of articles, every 15 second or so, the list reloads sending you back to the top of the page. As a consequence the app is rendered basically unusable.

Real shame because as a big consumer of news and magazines, this would have been a perfect option.

  • iOS blocks the app sometimes and you can’t use it until your reset your entire phone

iOS 16 and 17 have been the buggiest and worst updates yet. On my iPhone 15 Pro, the News app has suddenly disappeared and now whenever I try redownload or open the app, I get a warning saying it’s „Restricted” and to „Please disable restrictions in settings”??? I checked and the option to restrict apps is disabled on my phone…. I’ve looked on Apple support and of course the only responses are the basic „Did you try restart 🥺🥺” and „Try again later 😊😊”. But nothing works. And there’s multiple posts online about this, yet Apple doesn’t seem to care that their past 2 OS releases have been a nightmare to use, like seriously, you’re blocking apps now?????

The only response online I have seen work is to completely reset your phone. And lose all your data. Insanity.

  • Plenty of room for improvement.

Finally caved and signed up for the free trial of News+ and I truly have mixed feelings. Being honest, the app feels very incomplete if you don’t have a News+ subscription because a lot of the “featured” articles require a subscription so you’re constantly plagued with pay walls. Now that I have a subscription it feels more like a complete app but I’m also discovering that a subscription doesn’t unlock all content - for instance, the Washington Post is an additional $5.99/month on its own which just feels very Apple. One in-app purchase is never enough and in-app purchases are a monster that Apple birthed.

Outlets you block still show up in featured but it displays a “you chose to block this outlet” box and it’s like yeahhhh so why are you showing me references to it? Mind you that’s valuable space that could be delivering me more curated content that I actually DO care about.

Articles lure you in with descriptions of videos like watch the moment when X happened but then you go in the article and the video is not related to any part of the article. It’s effectively click baiting you and it’s gotten a lot worse lately on Apple News.

Finally Magazines seem really out of place here. Almost like a horrible after thought. At times you get articles from magazines that are featured or even new magazine editions but there’s no way to bookmark magazines to come back to them later from the standard newsfeed view - even though they’re presented there.

  • News+? Or News-?

After a week on a free subscription trail I’ve had it with this app. Every article you read comes with ads that force you scroll forever. You cannot tell if you actually reading premium content. To top it off, you don’t even know if you are getting the full stories from the newspapers you follow in Australia.

I live in Adelaide, my local stories are almost exclusively written by the Advertiser, the odd story or two may come from the ABC. The ABC, is of course a free platform. The problem with News corp papers like the Advertiser is, they don’t provide all articles to the News+ platform. So you are playing a lot of money, for about half the content. I have seen Melbournes the Age paper also do this within the app. At least in Melbourne and Sydney, there is so much press coverage, you can consume news for free and know everything that is happening around you locally. For Adelaide readers who feel like they know more about life in the Eastern states, either buy the Advertiser, or follow 7news at 6pm instead.

News+ is a huge flop in Australia. Don’t pay for it.

  • Poor curation, extremely biased

Very disappointed to find Apple pushing some very violent anti Palestine articles on me, from American news outlets that I am not even subscribed to, without selecting politics etc as a topic to follow, as someone in the UK. Keep your vitriol to yourself. I fully expect this review to be deleted. Pro Palestine does not equal hating Jews. This shouldn’t need to be stated. And it’s disgusting for Apple to be pushing a biased and dangerous agenda onto its users.

Same as everyone else, the general curation of news is absolutely shocking. For instance, receiving American articles about a British tv shows, that’s broadcast in the UK but not a single article from British outlet about it? Why would I want that? I’m not in the US. Of course it’s pertinent to read news from all over but a little geographic relevancy in logical places such as this instance wouldn’t hurt. It seems this issues are years old though.

Apple has gone from innovative and useful to down right lazy. Instead of new devices every year how about fixing some things so people don’t feel like throwing those shiny new devices at a wall every time they have to do something with a native Apple app. Bloody state of it.

  • Syncing never works

This review is specifically because the My Sports section is very poorly executed. The My Sports section has never actually worked as intended for me since I subscribed and the internet had very little suggestion of how to fix this or even acknowledgment that it's a problem from apple. The only way I got it to work on one of my devices was completely by accident when I was forced to change my icloud password due to a fraudulent sign in attempt. Upon changing my password and signing in the My Sports section actually stayed toggled and worked ONLY on my iphone. The moment I tried to open up my news app on my ipad the entire problem was reset and now the My Sports section does not work for me on a single device anymore. Realllllllly obvious this feature hasn't been perfected or even given much attention at all.

This isn't to mention that the feed I was able to access for the brief period of time that it worked on my iphone was inexplicably not featuring several things I'd selected to follow. The design/personalization and execution of how the feed looks and the users inability to shift the location of anything within the feed make this feature that had me excited on the surface a pretty sure fail.

  • Still facing paywalls from Australian newspapers

What is the point of paying a premium price for news subscription in Apple platform and then you get paywalls within the app? Apple made deals with these Australian newspapers through government arrangements and I’m not sure if this was meant to allow Australian newspapers to put their paywall stuff on the Apple News app.

Australian newspapers cannot have their cake and eat it. Subscribers are already paying for news content through Apple and this platform should not have paywall content. This is not the platform for paywall the idea of a news app is to aggregate content and pay one fee.

    This is totally unApple.

  • Serious issues with playlists

I use this app every day, and I have problems with it every day. I frequently build playlists for use in the car or at work. Unfortunately whenever there is a disruption, often in the beginning of the day or after somebody talks to me and I pause it, the playlists get messed up. I frequently find that items I have queued up get skipped, and marked as played all the way through. Even more annoying is that I then often find myself listening to something I heard already that day, or even a month ago. Often my playlists are interrupted by articles I have no interest in, things I said to suggest less of, or have tried in vain multiple times to remove only to have them pop up in the middle of a story I was actually listening to. This happens a lot around apple news today. They will “helpfully” queue up a “new” story I heard yesterday, or a week ago, skipping over what I meant to play next and marking it as played, sometimes multiple stories get skipped this way and I have to check “recently played” to get them (that menu takes a long time to load by the way)

  • One New TERRIBLE Addition To This App

I use this app every day and have for years. Used to be a 5 star app. With the newest iOS 17 update there is now a “New Stories” button that pops up at the top of the screen. HUGE problem with this is when you are backing out of an article to get back to the main feed, that back button is in the same place as the Top Stories button which scrolls you all the way back to the top of the main feed. So when you hit the back button, 90% of the time you also accidentally hit the Top Stories button and are thrown to the top of the feed and thus losing your place and are then forced to endlessly scroll down to try and find where you left off. This drives me crazy. And there is no way to disable this new feature. This was not well thought out at all. I hope they get rid of it or at least position it elsewhere in the next update. If not I doubt I will be renewing my subscription. ☹️ C’mon Apple, you can fix this.

They must run and look for a shelter from the war to try to save themselves an almost impossible task. But they will try to stay alive. With the thought behind their head that they might die that day that minute. The God we prayed to yesterday and we will continue to pray today. Please intervene and end this war quickly
