  • Work in progress but fantastic game

Enthralling port of a great board game. Brilliant gameplay and nice community of players. Easy to pick up but hard to actually win.

Still buggy and you will have numerous crashes, but these usually occur post games finishing so you can just reload the game and resume.
  • Too Buggy; Would Be Fun

This game would be a ton if fun. But bugs prevent me from finishing 50% of online/group games. Very frustrating. Wonder how much the developer cares. Freezes often, or suffers from other random malfunctions, like not being able to select cards to play and then timer running out. The bugginess to this degree is simply not necessary or worth it when you charge so much for the game. I have the latest iPhone w latest iOS. Developers- are you paying attention??

  • Confused - no longer; this game rocks

So ignore the review below. I’ve now played this game for many dozens of hours. Once I went into campaign mode it all started clicking. It’s incredibly complex and nuanced, and I’m constantly learning new ways to combine strategies. I’ve now ordered the board game and can’t wait to play with the family.

    Original ignorant review below:

I think this a game where you need to know the board game first. Or otherwise grab a tutorial because the in-game is not super helpful. I’ve been at it for an hour and still get randomly surprised by my inability to feed as a carnivore and my inability to defend as a herbivore. It’s frustrating as there seems to be zero logic to it. Every time I think I’ve figured out the “why,” the next time I apply that logic something different happens. I *should* like this game as I like other similar games. Just can’t get to the logic.

Hi Dave, Please be sure to give the campaign a try as we put it in there to help with some of these Traits. In the campaign, the professor explains the traits and they are added slowly as you go. There is a fair amount of depth to the game, and hope you find it rewarding. Hope this helps with your learning curve!
  • Excellent game, though multiplayer system drives poor sportsmanship

Overall, I have found this to be a terrific digitalization of the board game, with a well-scaffolded campaign and mostly enjoyable online play option. However, I’m currently losing motivation to continue online play in light of the multiplayer ranking system. Ranks are based on wins and losses over human players. To avoid losing rank points, players regularly exit out of games just prior to results tabulation. This allows them to avoid negative points, but also lessens the positive points awarded to winners, cheapening play for the sake of artificial rankings. Again, overall, a fantastic app, though I’ll likely not play online until this ranking mechanic is resolved in a patch (i.e., exiting out of games results in penalty & winning against AI garners points).

Thanks for the feedback jjcii. We're working on changing this to provide incentives to finish out games and penalties for leaving. We'll keep you posted on the progress.
  • Good port of a fun game

I enjoy the board game and this is a well done digital version. The only reason I’m giving it 4 stars instead of 5 is because I’ve had a few multiplayer games where the game has gotten stuck. One player will finish their move, but the game won’t progress to next player. The only option then is for the original player to drop out of the game.

When this bug is fixed, I will happily rate this a five star game.

  • It would be better with the expansions.

This game is, overall, a great game. It has all the basic features, it explains the cards well (unlike the board game which tends to cause tension in game night over what a card might mean), and it even has an online multiplayer and AI mode, but I think it could do better. I think that if the expansions were added either with the free game, as an unlockable feature (ie. Completion of the campaign, defeating a number of players in multiplayer, etc.) or as a small in app purchase that it would significantly increase replayability. Thank you for taking the time to review my feedback.

  • Server issues

Brilliant game but servers constantly causing MP games to freeze. Rey frustrating.
  • Great game. Sad I've waited this long to try it.

I love games and when this one came out, I really wanted to try it for the beautiful art but I never got around to it. Now, years later, this app is finally giving me the opportunity and it's such a well done app that I wonder if I did myself a favor by waiting this long. I'm super excited to try the expansions and see what else I can do in this game!

  • Feels too good to be true

This game is incredible. It’s exactly the kind of game I have always wanted. I’ve never played the board version, but after this I am very interested. Can’t wait for the expansions to be added, I would definitely buy them. (I wouldn’t pay as much as the board versions cost though, I think 5-10 dollars is a good price.) My only complaint is that the account setup is really buggy, but I’m writing this only a week or so after release and it’s already much improved, so I’m sure this problem won’t persist for long.

  • Excellent implementation of the card game

The physical version of this game has been around for a few years now and is a favourite amongst my friends and family. The premise of the game is to create and evolve new creatures. Points are scored based on the amount of food you eat, number of animals and how many traits they developed.
Each round you have a hand of cards which you can use to create new animals, increase their population or body mass and to determine their traits and characteristics eg: burrowing, tree climbing, horns. Most traits allow you defend yourself against carnivores, gather more food or become a carnivore and hunt other players animals.
Turning into a carnivore is a useful strategy if food is running low in the watering hole but it often needs to be well-timed as waiting too long could mean that players are able to defend against the carnivores and you run the risk of becoming extinct.
Evolution is a fast playing game, one that has a number of accessible strategies. Even if you get a poor hand, there are always options available to do other things like increase population, body size or create new creatures - so luck is minimal.
Note this game has nothing to do with the 1990s PC Game, it is a digital implementation of a card game originally released in physical form in 2014.
Thank you North Star for this great implemention.
