  • Apple TV app

This review is gonna be biased. Because I am an Apple person through and through. Having the Apple TV app connected to my iPad my MacBook Pro my families Apple devices and my Apple TV 4K streaming box. How this all connects together is amazing to me. The ease of use of pausing it on my phone and going to my TV and in starting it from there or to another device is amazing and the ease of use of Apple products is bar none. Apple really has simplified their products so the common person that doesn’t know anything about computers can just about pick it up and work it. My parents that are in their late 70s I’ve called them iPhones and iPads and Apple TV and with zero computer or electronic knowledge was able to operate these devices with a 30 minute training course for me. Tim Cook and the team at Apple in Cupertino, keep up the great work and I’m looking forward to the next innovation you and the team come up with.

  • Horribly organized interface

Don’t get me wrong, our house is full of Apple products and we love them. They generally do a great job on both hardware and software. This app is horrible though. Just like everyone else, they are trying to have their app be your home for all your TV content. They fail miserably in the organization and the interface. You can never tell what is free to you and what you need a subscription for. Even after only connecting the services that we have, it’s still very difficult to actually find something to watch easily. They need to take a page from Netflix and/or Reelgood. “Reelgood” especially does a good job with what Apple is seemingly trying to do. Name your services, have it show you what’s specific to you. It feels like Apple is more interested in showing you what you can subscribe to, rather than what you already have. Even then it is difficult to parse the types of movies you want to see. Honestly I just use “Reelgood” and tell it I have Apple TV plus. I wish Apple would take a look at their organizational system. I would much rather make Apple TV my jumping off point.

  • Great shows on appleTV+

I got free subscription for AppleTV+ when I bought my iPad Pro for a year. I love the content it has. Being a Montessori teacher there’ s some great series for kids, which my class has been watching on Fridays.

After my year ended I subscribed to it since there were so many great shows that I love. With one subscription you can also watch it in 6 devices which is a huge plus for me.
Currently I am obsessed with the Basketball show “ Swagger” apart from tennis and cricket , I am clueless when it comes to sports. I am not even sure who Kevin Durant is but he sure does have compelling story to tell I also love the “Morning show, “Truth be told,” Shrink next door featuring the “ People Magazine’ s sexiest man .
I even have my friends and family subscribing to AppleTV+. It is very reasonably priced and there’s something for everyone.

  • Good enough, but not great.

I use the TV app because I like the content, but usability could be much better.

I would love a way to make something like smart playlists, where I choose one or more shows and specify how I want them sorted (binge one show at a time, oldest to newest, newest to oldest). I’d make a playlist for myself, my wife would make one for herself (because we share an AppleTV and I assume this stuff would sync across all of our devices), another for when the two of us are watching together, and maybe some more depending on mood, how much time we have, etc.

The “Up Next” list is barely adequate. There’s no way to prevent other apps from adding whatever show they want, short of blocking those apps from integrating with it at all. It’s hard to tell whether an episode on the list is one I’ve already watched or if it’s new, especially when it’s not the newest episode of a show.

I’d love to be able to turn closed captions on and off and have it retain my previous choice for language and type rather than have it pop up a menu with a huge list of languages (which obscures playback while I find English SDH in the list) every time.

I’m sure there are more, but that’s all the time I care to spend today.

  • Apple TV

It’s a great app to just sit back and relax and watch and old movie from the past. Cause the one I just watched was Brother Bear and once in a while it catches my tears that it’s still such a great movie about brotherhood and the best line is when Dehani tells Kenai no matter what he chooses your always going to be my little brother. And that line is the best one yet. But yeah mainly it’s a great escape to find that movie and tv show comfort and closure about these moments and helps me realize. That when watching those old movies from growing up always gives us such a huge impact on our adult lives and I have many but one of them was what I just discussed briefly. And so yeah keep up the great work, the amazing art work, and making those movies a reality and maybe someday in this future of ours we’re going into could make a movie about Apple TV and how it got all of our favorite ones streaming including how it all started before it became an app. So yeah Thank You and Have Mercy. And keep being you.

  • Has trouble with its basic function

This is a video player app that has trouble doing that on many occasions. Just some of the issues seen:
    - After updating to iOS 15, downloaded videos don’t play. Black screen only and no sound. Mainly happens on iPad pros.
    - App will randomly decide to not play videos, both remote and local stuff. Forever activity indicator.
    - Sorting is messed up big time. Each section sorts content differently.
    - When you download stuff, the app does not sort by type. So you have tv shows next to movies next to home videos, etc.
    - The app will freeze while browsing. Your scrolling and suddenly things stop. And they don’t start again unless you force quit the app.
    - Search only searches the wide iTunes content library, it has no option to restrict to YOUR content. The Music app can do this…
    - In movies, chapters and chapter markers are not shown at all.
    - Try loading the app with a barely-there internet connection. Good luck while it decides to show you the full app or just the downloaded content. You can wait a long time.

This app just feels like a minimum viable product was made. There is no Apple magic in this TV app. It’s bare bones and bland. UX is sad too. They are spending so much effort making TV apps for dozens of third party products that they are neglecting the primary. The TV app has also barely changed since it was re-made from the iOS Videos app. Bugs and all are still here.

  • The worst modern streaming app I’ve seen

This app is garbage. Not talking about the shows.

My phone and iPad are both fully up to date and recent.

Why does this not default to playing in landscape mode when the video is made full screen? Every other major app does that. There is no world where I want what they do and no one else does it … for good reason.

Where is the list of things I’ve denoted as a thing I’m interested in? In every other app you can find these things readily.

Why do I have to jump through hoops to get to the main page for a show when I see a UI element I can click on to start watching? What if I want to go get show info? I have to go to another screen and search for it by name? That’s worse than any other app.

When I download shows why is that under my library? I clicked to download. Now I have to go to the library and THEN I see the option to view the things I’ve downloaded. This is badly designed.

If I’m watching a show and I pause and need to come back to it it can take minutes to start streaming again. 5Ghz router 300mb/s. It was streaming just fine until I paused it. I’ve tried force closing the program. Rebooting the device and also continuing where I left off in another device. Zero of the other major streaming apps do anything remotely like this.

The team that made this did a bad job.

  • Content? Great. Everything else? Not so much.

I love what Apple TV has to offer, but not how they offer it. This app has some issues. That is, when it will load. Half the time I spend more time struggling to get whatever I’m watching to start than I do actually watching it. It isn’t my wifi, every other streaming service app on my phone works just fine in the same circumstances. I’ve tried everything to make it load quicker, or at all for that matter, but nothing works. Besides that, there isn’t a watchlist, which isn’t that big of a concern, just something I think might help improve the experience. You can save to “Up Next” but then things just get mixed in with what you are currently watching and it gets cluttered. Honestly, it’s an ok app. I think if they went back and fixed the bugs and added a couple of features for users to simplify things it could be better. Anyway, I’m going to go try to get my show to load now. Wish me luck.

  • Really need to tighten this up.

It’s the little things that your normally are on point with. Let me explain something about Skip. When you ask me, do you want to skip the intro and I say yes, I expect Apple to take me to the start of the show. Not to 5 seconds prior to the end where the intro is normally loudest. Instead of making sure each episode skips to the right moment, it appears to be on a timer. Can you not hire someone that does nothing but adjust that? I probably shouldn’t complain half the time Skip doesn’t even show up. On my MBP, if I close the lid mid show, I normally have to close the app and reopen to get play to resume. Unless I fast forward through three minutes of credits half the time the episode will not show as watched. I love at least half the content but we need this app to be the premier streaming app.

  • Just another reason why I love iPhone

The Apple TV app is phenomenal. I love how all of my apps are connected, with the exception of Netflix, and serves as a universal hub for all of my shows. I love iOS and the UI it offers the customer so I am very happy this Apple continues to invest in this app. Also, the Apple TV shows are excellent, and the new Apple TV+ section makes it easier to find all the latest shows and films. My only concern/hope for the future would be to access the content directly from the Apple TV app without being redirected to the native app. For example, being able to open a Disney+ show without having to be redirected to the Disney+ app itself. Otherwise, I love this app and I hope it continues to grow. I hope to see a lot more shows, movies, and maybe even sports (the English Premier League would be a dream come true). Regardless, I have much hope for the future of this app and I am excited to see just how far Apple will go with it.
