  • Beautiful But Way Too Easy

I only just played through the first one last week and found it enchanting and incredible. The levels were so complex, I sometimes found myself simply marveling. I got stuck several times, eventually figuring it out without external help.
Now here we are with number 2. I'm on level nine and have breezed through it. I like the story well enough; it's sweet. But the same level of craftsmanship that would make Escher proud just isn't there.
If you just love the series, you'll want to get it anyway. There are some very cute references to number one you'll enjoy, but don't expect the same wow factor or difficulty level. I really hope they update later versions with more puzzles at no charge; doesn't live up to high standard the first creates.

  • Beautiful, as always, but not as good as the first

I still feel it is such a unique game that just transports you with its hauntingly beautiful graphics and sound...this game is beautiful, just like the first one. I thought it was also unique and interesting to introduce two characters and at a later stage allow them to be independent. Also enjoyed the stages where they're together but they'd get separated in the course and you'd have to make sure to move the mom specifically, so the daughter goes the same direction, even if she's in a different floor. Having said that, I walked away most of the levels feeling that it was lacking and too short. It seems easier than the first, though, the first wasn't hard either. It just made me say, what....that's it, when the credits started to roll.

  • Beautiful but short

This game is at least as beautiful and whimsical as the first, if not more so. The graphics and sound are exquisite.

However, it was very short. Although we are more familiar now with this style of game dynamics than we were when episode one was released, I do think that the puzzles were quite markedly less challenging. I prefer games that don't require a PhD in puzzle solving but I think this one was a bit too easy, even for my poor old brain.

Also, I did miss the crows. They were the perfect metaphor for all the intransigent fools we face from day to day..

  • Too easy

Loved the first one. Was excited for the second one. Disappointed at how easy it was. 4 stars for aesthetics, though.
  • With great expectation...

Lacking in substance. Way too easy. I'm not usually one to bemoan a game's lack of challenge, but this is beyond the pale. More than a few levels can be passed just by tapping the destination and watching the character walk there. The first installment made me feel smart when I found the solution to a puzzle, this one makes me feel dumb that I didn't try the most obvious path first because that's usually right one. It would be fine as eye candy if it heightened the ideas presented in MV1, but visually, it's a lot of the same arabesque spires against star fields you'd find in MV1, with a scant few new visual ideas. It was the visuals in concert with the startling mechanics that created the astonishing mystique of the first game; for this one to be so lacking on both fronts is disappointing. I am a fan of this series and I want it to succeed, but unless this purchase is filled out with significant expansions, it'll seem pretty threadbare in light of the promise of the original.

  • Too easy

The team is larger, but the game, although beautiful, is way to easy in comparison with the previous version. Not worth the money.
  • Great! But...

I loved monument valley, and monument valley 2 is a very good game, however the levels weren't as challenging and they felt really short. Plus, the storyline was lacking. From what I can gather it is a mother teaching her daughter the ways of something so that one day she can take over. You rapidly aged the little girl and I felt that was unnecessary. I know it is meant to imply the passage of time, but I felt it took away from the game. We don't learn anything about the ghosts?? Or temple guardians?? What is their purpose? Why are they there? I thought it would also somehow tie into the first game. A little disappointed. I don't want to leave on a bad note, so I would like to say I did enjoy the game and I had a lot of fun with it. I look forward to a monument valley 3 hopefully, or perhaps a game that happens very early in the timeline of this universe and explains why everything is now in ruins. As always, coloring and graphics are amazing! Great job to the design team and artists who worked hard on it. Overall, i love the game and will continue to play monument valley in the future. Good job guys!
    Sincerely,
    A loyal fan <3

  • Beautiful but way too short

After beating this game fairly quickly, I remembered immediately what I didn't like about the first one: it's simply too short. I've paid the same amount for other games (or less, even) that have kept me entertained for months, even a year. But this is just a couple hours of gameplay, and it's not nearly as complex as the first.

While the graphics are beautiful and the music is enchanting, it just doesn't save it from feeling like just a "world 2" section of a bigger game, at least not for its price point. Some of the levels in the game aren't even really levels, but more like cut scenes that are just dragged out to make it feel like a bigger game than it is. There aren't even puzzle elements present on those levels.

It also doesn't offer much in the way of replayability. Once you beat the puzzles, playing them again just feels tiresome - you know how to solve them (which they weren't that hard to start with), but you just want them done. Games are supposed to be fun, and this just doesn't offer that after the initial finish.

In short, if you want to play a beautiful game for a couple hours and have $5 burning a hole in your pocket, it's certainly fun and entertaining. But don't be surprised when it sits on your home screen, unopened, for months following your purchase.

  • Good, but like others say too easy

Beautiful with some nice new touches, but doesn't match the original in terms of challenge and replayability.
  • Hear me out

I agree with what other people have said. There is not A TON of actual gameplay. However, it was definitely enough for me. There are 14 levels in total with a couple of them being very short, but the rest taking me anywhere from 10-25 minutes to complete. I probably spent at least 3 hours on the game in total, so you could probably finish it in one day, but it helps if you do a couple levels each day to make it feel longer. I also agree that the game was not as challenging as the last one. However, it still did challenge me and make me think. There were still a couple of levels I got stuck on for a while. This game focuses on the story and the art. Overall, it is a beautiful game and you will probably enjoy it if you enjoyed the first game. $5 may seem expensive, but it was surely worth it for me.
