Chess, cut down to twelve squares. 12 Chess is a three-minute duel on a 3x4 board. Every piece is in range from the first move, so there is no opening theory to memorise and no dead middlegame — just a fight from move one. THE RULE THAT CHANGES EVERYTHING Capture a piece and it becomes yours. Drop it back onto any empty square and it fights for you. Nothing ever leaves the board, so a piece you lose is a weapon you just handed your opponent. HOW YOU WIN Take the enemy king, or walk your own king into their back rank and survive a turn. Push a pawn to the far side and it promotes. It is a small perfect-information variant with drops, closer to shogi than to an eight-by-eight game. That is exactly why a match takes three minutes and still hurts to lose.
