Version History of WorkOutDoors

5.5

September 19, 2024

Support for the latest Apple technology.

5.4

May 26, 2024

This is a minor version to address an issue with map transfer since iOS 17.5. Maps are successfully being transferred to the watch but iOS no longer informs the iPhone app of the transfer, so it looks like they are not on the watch even though they are. This version addresses that issue. There are also several other bug fixes and a few minor improvements: - map POIs can now be made larger - you can now zoom further into maps. - you can now choose a single colour complication even for multi-coloured watch faces - alert messages can be configured to stay on the screen for longer Note that a major version is on the way with lots of new features. This version is mainly to workaround the issues with iOS 17.5

5.0

September 5, 2023

This version of the app supports the Always on Display, which means that the metrics are visible even when your wrist is lowered (if your watch supports it).   Supporting the always on display required a large part of the app to be rewritten using Apple's latest coding language. This was a lot of work and took a long time, so apologies for the delay between releases. This version also includes a tip jar to allow you to show appreciation for the app and to support future development. Tips are completely optional and will not unlock any extra features. The one-off price for the app still lasts forever and all future updates are included, just as they always have been. Other improvements include: - Precision start screen where you can wait for a heart rate before starting a workout - Redesigned summary screens on the watch with larger text and more graphs - Action button can display the Start screen, and then press again to start a workout - Automatic Water Lock when starting a workout is now available for all activities - Auto-Pause is now available for all outdoor activities

Where has this been all my life? I was a diehard paying Runkeeper user for 10+ years but watched it steadily stagnate over the past few years (don't even get me started on their buggy Apple Watch app). I tried Strava five different times over the course of several years but kept getting annoyed by the appallingly limited utility it offers serious runners and how insipidly dumb the whole social self-promotion component of it was. Tried the default Apple Watch Activities app, which to its credit, at least worked consistently and wasn't as bug riddled as the other running apps, but kept bumping into customization limitations, especially with the layout of the Watch app screens. Tried Nike Run Club twice and was instantly turned off by the social aspect and the dumb inspirational coaching. Finally found this app through some Reddit and Quora discussions and decided to give it a try. WOW! I'm only about a month into using it, but I'm still blown away by all the customization capabilities. This is clearly an app developed by serious runners for runners, not by the marketing department of a lifestyle brand. I've only begun to scratch the surface of what this app does, and to be fair, it's daunting, but I'll be darned if it isn't exactly what I've been looking for all these years but didn't even know it.

  • Clearly a Labor of Love

This is the best app to record your workouts and the best part is that it’s not a subscription. Do yourself a favor and buy it. If you’ve gotten this far, you won’t regret it.

Also, don’t let the ostensible complexity scare you off. I’m 40 and I figured out how to customize everything in a surprisingly little amount of time. That said, I’ve spent the last hour playing around with the countless different options just because it’s so much fun. The app is just so polished.

(My cheapo optical heart-rate monitor synced up with no issues—having an accurate heart-rate makes all the difference in tracking your workout, I recommend that too, if you don’t already have one, the heart-rate readings from Apple Watch are not great.)

  • Incredible App with Apple Watch Ultra

This is just an incredible app for mapping your exercise and gathering data about the workouts you are doing.

I am astonished at how customizable the screens and the controls (like the Action Button) are. You can have as little or as much data as you wish, right there on your wrist.

The maps are detailed, and extremely useful. The app also helps you see your calories that you are accruing towards your Move, Exercise, and Stand Rings.

I’m excited to get out on the water with my iSUP this afternoon since this app tracks exercises involving paddling, with GPS data - a feature that isn’t standard on the Apple Workouts base software.

I was confused this morning (a Sunday morning) about a difference I was seeing between the calories WorkOutDoors was showing that I burned and what the Move Ring was showing so I emailed the developer. Within MINUTES (on a Sunday morning, mind you) he had responded and told me how to change the data displayed to give me exactly what I was looking for. (I had the screen set on total calories burned and not Active Calories)

I can’t say enough good about this app. The price is right and the functionality is incredible. Easy purchase if you have an Apple Watch Ultra.
