  • Wonderful DX for the iPad

This is just what I have been waiting for someone to build. A straight forward 6 operator FM synth for the iPad. It sounds good and all the controls fit on one screen. There is also a very useful and quick Sysex file import facility to provide thousands of ready made presets.

What makes it a 5-star app for me, is that the developer listens to his customers and keeps improving the app, instead of taking things away like many others (including the big companies) in this appstore. Being able to play velocity using the onscreen keyboard is one such noted improvement, as there are many times when one cannot use a separate MIDI touch sensitive keyboard to program and play it.

Thanks to the dev for making a great app at a great price!

Thank you for a review. The touch sensitive keyboard has been implemented at version 2.0. Try setting the wheel mode to "modulation" and you can change the velocity sensitivity.
  • Awesome

Great synth app. Can download and use sysex files from the interwebs which means there are literally h7ndreds of thousands of patches available. Well done devs.
  • DX7 gateway drug — 5 Stars!

This synth opened up the world of the DX7 to me.
After playing around with DX7 patches in this app for a few months I liked the sounds so much I bought myself a Yamaha TX802.
Now I upload patches to my TX802 with the same app.

    Worth every penny!
  • Love it

I freakin love this, I have loaded it with DX 7 patches, absolutely awesome
  • DX7 on iPad

I absolutely love this app! It allows you to have a “DX7” on your iPad, plus it supports AU so you can use it directly in a host app. It makes an awesome editor, especially for the Volca FM; Here’s why: it allows you to design a patch and hear it (unlike Patch Base). When you you import sysex files all operators are on (again, unlike Patch Base). But where it’s really great for the Volca FM is the inclusion of the Velocity slider where the mod wheel usually is. So you know EXACTLY how it will translate to the FM! If you want the slider controlling vibrato instead, you have that option by going to settings.

It also uses next to no CPU, even on an iPad Air 1, so it runs very smoothly.

My only complaint is that is desperately needs a manual explaining the utilities/ file management. I spent hours figuring out how to create a blank voice bank to store my custom patches to. I put a video on YouTube explaining the process. Search “Creating an Init Voice Bank in KQ Dixie”.

I highly recommend this for FM synthesis enthusiasts.

  • Update the Preset Management System

This is the best FM synth for iOS for technical sound design. You have to learn how FM synthesis works in order to make patches though. I would give it 5 stars but figuring out how to manage the presets is a real pain. It can be done but you soon find yourself on the forums asking questions. This is too bad because this synth has access to the largest number of presets compared to any other synth in history. Please developer make the preset copying, saving and organizing much more user friendly!

  • Excellent DX7 FM emulation

I am a professional keyboardist who uses iOS soft synths exclusively in live performances and studio work. I am also a sound designer and create my own sounds. I don’t use presets. I’ve been needing an excellent DX 7 emulator to properly create 80’s style synth patches, and I’m thrilled to now have one. The learning curve on this one for a programmer is difficult if you’re not used to FM synthesis, and the fact that the user manual is not in English can be a challenge...BUT... The emulation is so similar to the DX7 that you can learn what you need by reading a Yamaha DX7 manual (find PDF online). I’ve already created several patches and am using those to replace my previous sounds created using other types of synths. I see reviews with certain requests...but some may be missing the point that this is a pretty accurate emulation...with the benefits of the original and some of the “flaws” of the original. Example: I love that this uses only sine waves in its operators. Other FM synths use sine plus more complex wave forms. They sound great, but the DX7 only used sine waves and therefore so does KQ Dixie. Fantastic development work here.

  • Loading and saving presets is really confusing.

Loading and saving presets is really confusing. Params shouldn’t be global imo...Good purchase none the less.
  • Excellent app for FM files!

There are literally thousands of DX7 patches available on the net and this app is superb at presenting them. After the last upgrade the sound disappeared but returns if you visit PARAM and use the reset button below the poly/mono mode button. A tiny glitch that doesn't spoil the 5* rating.
  • Nice fm

Cool fm synth. Great for dx7 patches. Sadly no midi learn or AU automation and a very irritating patch saving system. Hopefully those issues can be addressed and then it’ll be 5 stars.

    Developer Response

Thank you for a review. MIDI Learn has been implemented at ver 1.2. And file management became improved at 2.0. Check it out, please.
