  • Subscription restoration doesn’t validate

Tried renewing after pausing a subscription. Subscription hadn’t run out but I lost access to everything and, despite renewing, I received a validation receipt verification error and can’t restore purchases. Stuck in a mid game loop I can’t finish, telling me my turn limit is up. The app is fantastic but bugs like these come up now and then that make the experience a little frustrating.

    Developer Response

Hi, this was a bug in version 2.3.1 which was immediately fixed in 2.3.2 now available. Sorry for the inconvenience!
  • We need Chinese language!!!

this is a very very very good game... but don't have Chinese language.... I have the Chinese version of the physical card. But I also hope I can play this game on my mobile phone. I have paid at least $300 for the physical version. Thanks to the designers for bringing good games.
  • Saving multiplayer games

I love the game and have played the board game many times in the past. My only complaint with the app is when I tried to play with friends, we couldn't save it when someone had to my go, so we are limited to playing through the entire game in one go if we decide to play. If there could be a save feature for multiplayer that would be amazing! Aside from that the game seems to run really well and it's definitely easier to teach my friends how to play on here vs the real board!

  • Great game & great adaptation

I love both the game and digital implementation here! I’d really like to be able to lead my own play mat background and it would be great if the opening main menu could be disabled but it’s otherwise pretty ace.
  • Suggestions/Comments

1.Tutorial has no “back” button 2.Tutorial mentions “inland” and “coastal” but highlighted spaces that were obviously on the coast, but called “inland” without explanation 3. Tutorial mentions rare case of population growth… firstly, define population growth, secondly, why even mention this now? 4. Tutorial has no exit button. I have to close the app to get back to the main screen. I downloaded the app ready to pay for the full experience, but seeing
how little care was put into it so far, I’m not going to bother

  • Good game but not for me apparently.

The game was put together well and plenty of different options, spirits to play with. I was looking forward to it. But am finding it too hard, too discouraging even with easy options selected. I want to enjoy the little time I have available to play.
  • A fun game and decent digital adaption

As a physical board game, this is one of my favorite games. This digital version is quite good, and honestly my sole complaint is that when a game is won or lost it immediately jumps away from the board to an end screen "summary" and doesn't let you actually look over the final board state, look over what cards you had chosen for that spirit and how that and event cards/fear cards affected things, think about strategies for future games, etc (which is something I deeply enjoy doing when playing the physical version with friends)

  • A decent, pleasant adaptation

I have played the original at least 25 times. I was eager to try this app and see its worth. Truth be told, if they didn’t have that 2$ pass to access everything, I would have never consider buying it. However, I am glad that I gave it a try. I did not encounter any bug and was impressed by how efficiently every card’s quirky power is handled. I had not realized how much work it would take to adapt a game like Spirit Island. They did a good job.

All in all, I recommend it. I love the board game so much that I wish we could have had an adaptation by a more professional studio like DireWolf. I would have loved to have a reworked esthetic of SI like they did for Root. Especially at the 40$ price tag asked for Spirit Island… I am glad to support a small studio, but I wish everything looked better. Perhaps they can work on that when they will have everything added in.

  • Patch notes claim offline support is fixed

Changing review to 5 stars now that offline support is fixed according to the recent patch notes. I haven’t tested yet, but exciting to see responsive devs.
  • Great implementation of a complex game

The worst thing about Handleabra’s implementation of Spirit Island is it teaches you how you were paying the game wrong. For example, the Ocean spirit can’t push an invader into the sea during an event action. It’s not an easy game to learn on the phone, and reasonable on an iPad. That said, once you know the game you can play it dozens of times and still discover new tactics.

Spirit island is a game that has both incredible inherent and emergent complexity. It can be hard, at first, to understand what’s going on and what to do. Then, once you do, you can see incredible possibilities and interactions.

Great implementation of my favorite game of the past five years.
