Unreliable and confusing trip allocation

So, this app exists to take data from the transponder, integrate with phone data and do two things: (i) feedback on driving style, this is OK. (ii) to allocate different drivers to different trips which Marmalade suggest will happen automatically, and is required as part of the insurance cover including ensuring that the young driver uses the car <50% of journeys .This is where its limitations appear:
1. You can only have one additional driver / app user for the account which means that when another parent drives the car, the journey is not properly recorded. If my wife’s use of the car is not recorded, it will erroneously push up my daughter’s %use of the car.
2. I have been allocated to trips despite my phone and I being nowhere near the car.
3. You can only be a “passenger” or “driver” for trips - there is no “I wasn’t in the car at all” option.

This is a shame, because the principle of the app is great and these should be easily remediable issues .

Until then - 2 stars only as you really do have to manually check each journey on both phones to remain vaguely accurate.

please DONT use this

It’s probably the worst insurance company out there. Inaccurate GPS , too harsh on cornering and a ridiculous, backwards and straight stupid belief on how to drive. So bad to the point where I’ve had advice from driving instructors and friends that race cars on a semi professional level tell me that your advice and the way you mark stuff is complete nonsense and even dangerous in some areas. It is no surprise that the drivers I know who have good scores on this app are the ones that cause the most danger and disruption to others since they don’t know how to properly drive. yet you think that’s good driving? What a joke of a company

Brilliant app - so useful

Well thought out app that my daughter finds really informative whilst learning to drive. The way that Marmalade (via the app) support young drivers with the black box technology is excellent; complimented by an excellent web site for advice and tips for learners and parents teaching their child to drive.
I can’t speak highly enough about Marmalsde and their customer service.

Great for parents to keep tabs

The app is for my son but I have it too since we share the car, in his first year I want to see how he’s doing, recently he’s some red areas for cornering at roundabouts and cornering, always comes down to speed, teens and new drivers need to be aware of the dangers in driving, the real learning starts once you pass your test. Everything is speed, I’ve told him.
Yes this is a great app and so precise, a great Bluetooth device tracking driving performance like we have on the buses and lorry’s

Best Insurance App to date!!!

I love being insured with marmalade i really do! to begin with i had a faulty black box but as soon as i raised the issue i was issued a new one right away and it works perfectly! I love the layout of the app and how easy it is to track how i am doing and seeing the gps routes of where i’ve been right after my drive with my score available in minutes of ending the route! I couldn’t recommend enough and will be sticking with them 😊

Marvelous Marmalade

It is a good all round app and shows what you need too comptete against the Young driver as an experienced driver.
This app is getting there to need a few tweaks. It mark you down for using the phone when the passenger is using it can you distinguish between the driver an passenger?
When using car play again it marks you down as using the phone. This needs looking at.
It is well presented app.

Not keen

This app is for my son who’s recently passed his test and borrows my car. It tracks and assesses his driving and gives him feedback and lower insurance. However, we live in the country and to get anywhere have to drive windy, narrow lanes, with frequent sharp breaking as someone hurtles around a blind corner straight towards you. The app doesn’t like that! It would much prefer you to drive in a straight line at a consistent speed regardless of road conditions or other traffic.

Also, in order for the app to work properly it needs to be switched on whenever I drive my car too. So every day, I am being tracked and monitored (where is this data held and who is it available to?) I am REALLY uncomfortable with this. I feel this breaches GDPR as I do not consent to my real time location being stored. It seems though, that for my son to be able to use the app, I do not have the right to withhold my own personal data.

Fundamental flaws and safety concerns.

Disregarding the Marmalade Policies, the app has fundamental flaws and safety concerns. Marmalade requires you to set the app to track your location always, first of all this should be a warning. I have evidence and noted that Marmalade records my day to day business such as travelling on the Underground, travelling between cities, but more concerning when one travels in fellow people's cars the entire trip is recorded even if the car does not have a black box. This is a security concern and a privacy concern. Additionally the app records when the phone is used, this is fundamentally flawed, when one passes one's phone to a fellow passenger to give navigation instruction's or make phone calls. Thirdly, the app rates your rate of deceleration when braking, however one has to remember the driver cannot always be at fault for this. Fellow motorists may cause risks, in which case it is safer for all road users that one decelerates at a given rate. Finally, the app does not allow one to break up a journey, so that travellers drive different stages of a journey. If one strops the car, switches the car off, and a fellow passenger drives the onward journey, the entire journey is recorded as being driven by a single user which is not the case and wrong. Additionally it would be useful if the Insurance provider with help enable the transition toward a more sustainable future by improving the ease of setting up insurance for electric vehicles.

Issues still not fixed

I’ve had this about a year now. As a parent, the app still insists that it tracks my location, ie I turn on location to always, just so I can open the app and view my sons journeys. It is overly sensitive to moderate breaking and acceleration. The app doesn’t display correctly who the driver was from my perspective. It still shows and defaults all journeys to ‘driver’ when I am looking at my own app and my sons journeys, when clearly I’m not the driver. It’s also necessary that the young driver is expected to not be the main driver, defined as less than 50% of all journeys. However we have a more than one car so I may choose any vehicle which seems arbitrary and it’s not clear if a journey is per mile or every time the engine is turned on.
I logged these issues a year ago and still not fixed.

Great

Excellent and fair driving scoring, great experience with my black box so far and get useful notifications when you get a red journey which so far I’ve got one and I’ve been using the app to check my faults since which is great.

However my feedback is to add a filtering feature in the trips tab so you can efficiently filter to see your worst rated journeys in order to see where to improve your driving.
