Driving Theory by James May User Reviews

Worth the £6.99

I never pay for apps because I’m apprehensive about their quality. However, the 10,000s of positive reviews and feedback for this app is absolutely true. I downloaded it 6 weeks before my theory and used it daily to train for the test which I passed. The app is well laid out and it is quite nice to have the comical commentary of James May. I definitely recommend this to anyone who’s got their theory coming up, especially if you’re like me and failed it before. It’s helps make learning fun and memorable.

To the app developers, I feel there are few tweaks needed - on the day of the test I wanted to use the app to revise quickly just before but it asked if I’d passed my test. I had to click “haven’t taken it yet” then reset the test date so I could check that off. Adding a time of test could be nice so it doesn’t preemptively ask if it’s passed as I’m sure many use it on the day of. Also more hazard perception videos if it’s possible because I had learned them all and felt like I was only passing on the app because I knew what and when the hazard was going to be.

Passed it!

I was very happy the app taught me so much! I would have loved there to be an online version for my laptop as I found the hazard perception difficult to see. Suggestion, there were several questions (particularly regarding signage) which I never saw in the app. Perhaps they are new additions to the theory test but you might want to check it out. Now any suggestions how to secure an appt for my practical test? Literally all locations within an hour of my home are completely through Feb q2024. I do not have an instructor to assist me

Hello, thank you for your feedback - and congratulations on passing your test! With regard to the practical test, test dates are very over-subscribed, all we can recommend is you a book a test in the future and work towards it, and look out for cancellations in the meantime if you're happy to not have much advanced notice of a test date!

Great App better than the 4 in 1

I like how immersive this app is. You can easily navigate through it and it makes sure you understand what you’re doing. The training plans are a great idea. However, I did not do the training plan and mastered each topic individually on the multiple choice and Hazard perception. Thanks to this I passed first try! The downside is that it said I was gonna fail because I didn’t complete the training tasks. It also doesn’t allow you to share whether you have passed or not without the training plan feature. There was also a bit of misinformation being the fact that I would fail because I hadn’t done 100% mastery. I had only done 50% on both sections and I felt that was enough for me to pass, which I assumed correctly. Im still going to hate the app for saying I would fail just because I went about the training plan differently. The app also crashes a lot when on the hazard perception section which was annoying because it would make me do it again, when all I wanted was to access the video explanation. Apart from that the app was really good and is easy for anyone of All ages to understand 👍🏾

Many thanks for your very comprehensive review.

Easy and fun to use

I studied using the app as a way to destress and fall asleep before bed. I studied intensively for three weeks straight and passed with confidence

Recommend to people who are struggling or don’t know how to revise

I was struggling to pass my theory test twice and I was going to give up until I found this app advised and after using this app I was able to pass my theory test with ease. The app gives you training plans and each plan is different and they help you in what you are struggling in the plans and if you don’t like to do the training plans you can go through the topics individually. Also, the app tracks your progress and it can help you keep track of when your theory is if you tell it to and remind you to revise if you want to be reminded.

All in all a brilliant app, to use to revise and highly recommend.

Passed 1st time 50/50 marks after only 4 days using this!

I bought this app ages ago and never really used it. Finally after a year and a bit later I booked my theory and still hadn’t done ANY revision. I set my training plan on here for 4 days till my test and the practice sessions with the questions, hazards, signage and more questions were super useful. Some was common sense, other parts had to be learnt.

The 50 question mock tests were great as-well. Being prepared for how the test would work and the hazard perception with the clicking and flag system was helpful too even though you do get shown on the test day.

Managed to pass perfect (50 of 50) on questions and got a pass mark for my hazard. Looking forward to the driving lessons and using the other resources this app has to offer in regard to practical.

Excellent though flawed

Having a difficult time troubleshooting “failing” video hazards when I identified the hazard early and a red flag registered. I’m on a 2nd gen iPhone SE. Very aggravating. Everything else is phenomenal. Veteran US driver who lived in the UK for a year, commuting by bicycle and never once driving, preparing for possible permanent relocation.

GET THIS APP!!!

I couldn’t recommend this app enough. I’ve just taken my theory test and the questions in the app were literally identical to the questions on the real test. I got 49/50 on the theory and 65/75 on the hazard perception. Even the hazard perception videos on the app were practically identical to the ones I had on the test. It’s easy to use and I love the way it tracks your progress so you know exactly where you are with learning everything. It teaches you by making you answer questions which is good because most apps you don’t really have a clue what you’ve learnt, it just tells you information and doesn’t really teach you anything. Basically you literally cannot fail if you work through this app and do the practice test. The only in-app purchase is for the practical test tips which is optional and doesn’t stop you learning any of the theory. THANK YOU JAMES MAY!!!

Well thank you. Congratulations - and many thanks for your review.

Great app with room for improvement

I slightly regret spending so much time on this app. The interface is fun and user friendly, however none of my mock test results count towards my mastery progress, only practice tests, which means a lot of my work isn’t counted. I also find the algorithm shows the same questions over and over again despite answering them correctly at least 10 times, and doesn’t show me new questions as frequently making mastery progress very slow despite having pass several mock tests. Also, one aspect of the UI can be improved: the “display answers now” button is places exactly where question answers are, which often result in me pressing an answer by accident just when the timer expires, at least let users turn that function off.

Many thanks for your review. The algorithm should be giving you randomised questions based on the time you have until your test. Thanks for the comment on the UI, we'll take a look at that.
