  • Great but…

I love this game and it’s basically what I’ve wanted for ages, a match 3 without tons of micro transactions. However! It feels like it was originally developed with micro transactions in mind, the reason I say this is starting in the late 100 levels and on, some of the levels get insanely difficult. Like you couldn’t possibly beat them in the first 5-7 tries, and even then sometimes it takes so long that the game starts you with crazy power ups after your 10th attempt in a row.

I really hope they rebalance the levels and make them a bit less insane to beat. I find myself being more frustrated with the difficulty than engaged with the game and wanting to keep going.

Developers: I’m not sure how easy it would be to rebalance the levels starting in the early mid to late game, but the game would be perfect if you did. Also, I suggest adding the ability to change your design decisions after you’ve made them.

  • Finally, a match game I want to play!

Bless you, Apple Arcade and Tactile Games Limited. I’ve always wondered what it might be like to play one of those groovy “fix up the house” gem-matching games without all the gross timers and currency bundles. Now I don’t have to wonder. The art is delightful, the gameplay is compulsively fun, and I don’t have microtransaction ads coming up every time I finish a level.

Over the years I’ve watched countless fun, colorful mobile game concepts get ruined by the impulse to turn everything into a moneymaking machine—where every level has a new slot machine lever to pull. (Remember that fun series involving gardens and the undead? Yeah, like that.) Games are designed to twist difficulty and repetition so people will spend more money.

Games like this show how Apple Arcade is a cool, calm oasis in the flashy casino desert of mobile gaming.
