Maybe someday

Been evaluating for a couple of days now, and unfortunately I can’t get behind it. The pitch of the bells is too low. It’s too hard to hear outdoors. It sounds as if an actual ship’s bell is being used. Aboard ship, very small bells are used on the quarterdeck or in the pilot house. These smaller bells have a much more pleasing “tinny” sound to them. Much better for hearing outdoors or in louder environments. It’d be nice if there were volume controls within the app independent of the phone’s controls. Also, I don’t care for the visual notifications and I can’t see the need for barometric pressures and temperatures. There are other apps for that. All I’m looking for are ships bells that run in the background. But, I’ll hold onto yours in the meantime. Still hoping. 11/19: New issue. If you’re using, say, YouTube when the bells strike, the app will double-strike. For instance: At 1200 hours (12:00), the app will strike 8 bells . . . twice. Two notifications, 16 bells.

Thanks for taking the time to leave a review - all feedback is helpful. The volume of the notifications is not something developers have control over, but I may have discovered a workaround for this… might take a while, but hopefully it’ll be in the next update - not sure I can make it much louder though. If you send me a link to a source with a sound you like I’ll get something similar included in the future (possibly second update) The notification popup appearance is a leftover from testing and I confess it should have been removed before release. In the meantime it can be switched off in the main Settings app on your phone. Just look in Notifications->FiveBells. As for the other information, this was an app originally designed just for me. This data is useful to me. Once it was finished, I thought I’d share it for free. Most people won’t go into the app often so won’t see it anyway. As for the double sounding, not come across that but I’ll look into it. Update: The latest update (iOS 15 only) lets you choose a quieter version of the standard bell, or a gentler bell sound. Instructions are also included for switching off the banners. Unfortunately recent versions of iOS have no way for me to send a notification without banners from inside the app.

Needs some tweaking

This app is good, but a choice of bell sounds and volume control would make it great.

Response from developer

Thank you for your feedback. Alternative bells should be implemented in a future update, maybe not the next one, but the one after that. I’m open to suggestions for what these should be. Email support@yachtlog.app if you have any ideas. The volume is dictated by the device itself, but I have an idea to get round that 😁 Update: The latest update (iOS 15 only) lets you choose a quieter version of the standard bell, or a gentler bell sound.

Great app!

This is just what I was looking for to help me keep track of time, the bell rings on the hour and a half hour and has a very pleasant sounding loud chime!! Plus it works with iOS 15! Thank you!
