  • Meh.

    Pros:
    - Fast and responsive.
    - Quickly finds matches for online play.
    - Interesting cues in chess academy that shows real work has gone in building the sections.

    Cons:
    - Confusing character and rewards. Hard to know what some rewards do.
    - Timer for short games seems weird. Playing on the lichess app I have not experienced losing time so quickly. I think it has to do with network delays from both ends and the how long the unnecessarily complex UI takes to process and update.
    - No zen mode where you can just enjoy a simple games of chess without the unnecessary bells and whistles.

  • Missing Features

The game plays fine and I like the style, but it is missing castling, which is vital in my opinion, and en passant, which is really just me being picky but that doesn’t change it’s not there. Outside of that, I say this game is pretty good

Dear Jacob BuggBoy, Thank you for providing us with your feedback. When developing Chess Universe, one of our primary goals was to create a comprehensive chess game that incorporates all the necessary rules, including castling and en-passant. In Chess Universe, you can perform castling on either the king or queen side by dragging the king to the castling square or by tapping the king and then the castling square. We have also implemented and ensured the functionality of en-passant, which is an integral part of the chess rules. If you'd like to learn more about en-passant and its specifics, we recommend visiting the following link: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/En_passant. We hope this information clarifies any concerns you may have had. Should you have any further questions or need additional assistance, please feel free to reach out to support@chess-universe.net. Kind regards, Chess Universe Team
  • Chess

I really like this app so far. It very interactive and a fun way to play chess!!
  • Very nice chess app

This app is a great app for beginners to adaptive players, better than chess.com possibly! Would recommend.

Ok… I am an international chess master… and I will say I have quite a bit to say. First off, it doesn’t “teach you” anything. Want to actually learn something? Use chess.com. This app gives you pretty much impossible positions and tells you to try and win. It is also ver hard to find your way around the app. They are teaching you how to win positions that will pretty much never happen. So, in my opinion, do not download it. It is actually bad. Also, chess is nothing like this app. Use something else trust me

  • It’s okay, but not a big two competitor for chess apps

As an app where you can play chess and get some neat rewards it is fine. The learning part is where it just fails. It’s not that it’s bad. It’s just not guided at all. If you’re a strong player you might get some benefit from drilling them but you’re not going to learn anything. It’s gamified repetition with little to zero actual instruction. Because of that it kind of fails in what it promises. For an arcade included app it’s fine, if you’re an absolute beginner it won’t help you at all. If learning is your goal it’s 100% the wrong app. I would give it three stars but it actually functions very well, very smooth and I didn’t encounter any bugs. Lichess study and chessdotcoms overpriced premium plans are both miles beyond the learning capabilities of this app. Even with it being free I couldn’t recommend it to learners.

Dear JakeyDonkeyBrains, Thank you for providing us with your detailed feedback. We highly appreciate it as our team is constantly working on improving all aspects of our platform, and player feedback plays a crucial role in our upgrades. In the Chess Academy's learning section, we offer 24 thematic Chess Towers, consisting of 1000 puzzles meticulously selected by a chess grandmaster. Each puzzle is accompanied by a brief text that assists players in analyzing the position. Additionally, we have included a helpful feature in the top right corner, the HINT button. By using this button, players can either view the best move for a given position or receive a highlighting effect on a specific piece, encouraging them to strategize and determine the appropriate move for this piece. We believe that utilizing these two features can significantly benefit players in their chess journey. Moreover, we have introduced ABC towers, which can be identified by the ABC sign. In this special mode, players are presented with three possible moves, but only one of them is optimal. This mode serves as a valuable guide for beginner players, providing them with initial direction and helping them consider their moves more effectively from the beginning. We would love to hear your thoughts on whether these hints have been helpful to you. Please feel free to reach out to us at support@chess-universe.net with any feedback or suggestions. Best regards, The Chess Universe team
  • Preexisting App but much better now

I remember playing this long ago when it wasn’t owned by Apple Arcade, it wasn’t any good compared to how it is now. 10/10
  • They made it addictive!

Finally a chess game that rewards you with cool meaningless stuff making the game that much more fun.
