## What is 1812?

Overview

The year is 1812. Great Britain and her allies are battling Napoleon for control of Europe. In response to British seizure of American ships and goods, the young United States declares war on Britain and invades Canada. You and up to 4 other players take command of the armies of the British Redcoats, Canadian Militia, and Native Americans, or of the American Regulars and American Militia to decide the fate of the Americas. The action takes place on a huge historically accurate map that spans the United States and Canada from Detroit to Montreal. Players from each faction cooperate to gain control of key towns and forts.

About the Game

1812 features fast, intuitive and fun gameplay that involves teamwork and strategic planning in a historic and educational setting. This is THE GAME for people who want an enjoyable and manageable introduction to historic/conflict based games.

In 1812 - The Invasion of Canada, players take on one of the roles of the major factions that took part in the War of 1812. On the British side these are represented by the British Regulars (Redcoats), Canadian Militia and Native Americans; and the American Regular Army and American Militia comprise the American players. Players for each side will cooperate with each other in order to plan and conduct their campaigns. Each side will attempt to capture Objective Areas on the map. When a truce is called, the side that controls the most enemy Objective Areas wins.

### 5/5 — best game ever

*2021-03-11*

it is 🔥 I really wanted the actual board game but I will settle for this because the game is pretty expensive and hard to find sad 😢!

### 4/5 — Good game with a few glitches

*2019-12-08*

I really enjoy this game. Well balanced, unpredictable and smart AI. There are a couple of glitches with the 1813 scenario ending at the end of round 3 even if truce cards have not been played. Ft Erie appears to be worth two points for the Americans when captured. Some event cards don’t quite do everything they say you can do. I would buy more scenarios.

### 1/5 — Sad

*2019-02-07*

Crashes on iPad. Main screen starts and then new game won't load. Goes to black screen then app closes. 😭

### 3/5 — Boat movement doesn’t work on east coast

*2018-11-22*

You can’t go by boat from lacolle down the eastern us coast. That’s a big mistake from the excellent board game. Please fix!

### 5/5 — Great strategy game!

*2018-08-31*

This is a very good follow-up to the previous 1775 game by the same developers. The American militia and regular army face off against the British regulars, Canadian militia, and Native American tribes in the war of 1812.

The game features a simple system, with area movement and card- driven movement capabilities. Combat is based on die rolling, but different units have different potential to hit, flee or hold in place. The Great Lakes divide up the border region so that there are three main fronts, which allows for various strategies as to where you're going to attack and defend. Both sides have to balance pursuing offensives with funneling additional troops and reinforcements to the front; it's very easy to run out of steam just when you're striking deep into enemy territory.

The best thing about 1812, like 1775, is that it's one of the very few games by Hexwar that allows you to play other opponents online. Maybe it's just me, but playing the AI is never as much fun as playing an actual human, and a human opponent will come up with much more clever strategies every time. More like this, please!

### 1/5 — How to ruin a board game concept

*2018-07-12*

What was a simple but solid board game is ruined in this app. AI cheats blatantly. It units move an extra territory than is indicated by the card played. It also seems to ignore some restrictions placed on cards. Not sure if these are bugs or just bad programming but they should be able to fix these quite easily if they wanted to.

### 3/5 — Clunky but great

*2017-12-16*

The game is excellent. The AI is challenging. Some of the presentation and graphics are clunky. The online is good I would like the option of private games. Players online are low in number maybe because of the high price.

### 2/5 — Too Expensive

*2017-08-26*

The game's overpriced and lacks a lot of content for being at the price it is, also froze on me a few times. Save your money.

### 4/5 — Good game!!! (iPad Air)

*2017-08-08*

What the title says! I also have 1775, which along with this game and 1754 make up the Birth Of America trilogy. Very fun and educational game system. It has a few birthing glitches, but nothing that will kill it in the crib. Matter of fact, so did 1775 and HexWar was very responsive to my inputs and 'got her done', and they will do the same here. These folks are serious about fixing stuff - but they have to hear from you! That's the key: give them INPUT in a timely and clear manner with screenshots if possible. I've never been disappointed with their games/support (I have a bunch of their titles). They have a great track record, and I'm looking forward to 1754: The French And Indian War.

### 1/5 — Don't Buy

*2017-08-06*

This is a horrible waste of time and money. The game doesn't even load!

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 4.1.2 — 2026-08-20

Fixed a rare battle softlock where overlapping physical dice could assign the Militia flee result to a British die.

### 4.1.1 — 2026-08-18

Fixed the 1812 setup so the correct British, Canadian, and Native American units begin in Fort Erie rather than Fort George.

Fixed Truce victory checks so the British side must play the British, Canadian, and Native American Truce cards before the game can end.

### 4.1.0 — 2026-08-14

Rules and fixes

- Fixed the green and red region highlights used when placing and moving troops.
- Fixed the missing numbers on the fled-unit counters.

### 4.0.0 — 2026-08-11

Updated the game to the current Unity engine.
The computer opponent has been improved across the board, and Easy, Normal, and Hard now each offer a clearly different challenge.
The computer now places enlistments and returning fled units where they count: defending an objective it is scoring, contesting one of yours, or holding a muster area.
The computer no longer misjudges the odds when retaking its own territory. It assumed the defender always rolls first, when the first roll belongs to the side whose homeland the battle is fought in.
Fixed the computer misplaying its cards: moving more armies than a card allowed, over-planning War Hawks and wasting the surplus, and spending Fife and Drum without using the extra movement it grants.
Hard now judges whether an attack is worth making by weighing the two forces directly, rather than from a small sample of simulated battles.
Corrected the order factions act in, and several command decisions.
Added the full rulebook inside the game and removed the old external manual dependency.
Fixed loading during enlistments duplicating a muster, missing save slots causing errors, and movement with an empty canoe army crashing.
Brought the app up to current platform requirements.
Kept controls clear of rounded screen corners, camera cutouts, and system gesture areas.
We're excited to announce that online multiplayer is coming in the next major update, along with a new online ranking system.
If you notice anything that isn't working as it should, please let us know and we'll get it fixed.
