It’s honestly not ground breaking in my opinion, because you can actually get the same information elsewhere online for free and your primary care doctor. The genetic testing is very basic and generalized. I’d save your money on this test honestly and go with Ancestry instead. Ancestry is miles ahead of genetic information given and though not focussed on Medical stuff, 23andMe is honestly not worth the money. For example a couple of days ago I could access parental inheritance, after updating the app it has now been locked and is a feature for those who pay a subscription!? Not only should it be free but even if customers have parents who already put their dna on their it should be free for them to see their inheritance or other features! I only update it to see the new “DNA relatives” however this has put me off for good! ### 1/5 — Too many upgrades *2026-08-16, version 15.31.0* I got my 23andMe kit about 3 years ago. This is an expensive kit to start with and now everything is an upgrade you have to buy. You have to pay to see additional relatives which was the whole point of buying the kit. They refuse to retest the DNA and to even check their algorithm. There should NOT even be an algorithm since DNA results are hard scientific data. Thanks!! ### 5/5 — Expand Indigenous American Results with Regional Affinities ⭐️⭐️⭐️ *2026-07-04, version 15.27.0* Dear 23andMe Team, I would love to see 23andMe expand the Indigenous American ancestry experience beyond broad continental labels and Genetic Groups. I understand that Genetic Groups require strong matching to modern reference communities, and not everyone will qualify for one. However, for customers who have Indigenous American ancestry but do not receive a Genetic Group, the current result can feel too broad to be useful. For example, “North American” covers a very large area, including parts of Canada, the United States, and Mexico. While I appreciate receiving that information, it does not provide much direction for people trying to better understand where their Indigenous ancestry may fit regionally. It would be helpful if 23andMe added a regional layer between the broad ancestry category and Genetic Groups. For example: Indigenous American • Regional Affinity: Southeastern United States, Mid-Atlantic, Great Lakes, Northeast, Plains, South Central, Southwest, Northwest Coast, etc. • Genetic Group: None detected, or displayed when applicable This would not need to claim tribal identity or membership. Instead, it could simply show where a customer’s Indigenous DNA most closely aligns geographically when there is not enough evidence to confidently assign a specific Genetic Group. This would be especially valuable for people with documented or consistent Indigenous ancestry who do not receive a Genetic Group. Some customers have very small percentages, while others have much higher percentages, yet “North American” alone often provides very little context. A layered system could look like this: 1. Broad ancestry category: Indigenous American 2. Regional affinity: Where the DNA best aligns geographically 3. Genetic Group: Displayed only when there is sufficient confidence This approach would provide more meaningful information without overstating certainty. It would also help customers whose ancestry comes from older, displaced, or currently underrepresented Indigenous populations that may not yet be represented within existing Genetic Groups. Regional affinities would also complement genealogical research. Many people already have documented family histories pointing to a general area but are looking for additional context from their DNA results. Seeing that their Indigenous ancestry aligns most closely with a region, such as the Southeastern United States, the Great Lakes, or another part of North America, would provide another valuable piece of evidence to consider alongside historical records and family history, while still acknowledging that DNA alone cannot identify a specific tribe in most cases. One thing I have always appreciated about 23andMe is the historical information included throughout the ancestry experience. Adding regional affinities for customers who do not receive a Genetic Group would continue that tradition by helping people better understand the geographic history behind their DNA, even when a more specific community cannot yet be identified. Thank you for continuing to improve the ancestry experience. As someone who genuinely enjoys learning about the history behind my DNA, I appreciate the work your team has done over the years. I hope you will consider expanding the Indigenous American experience in the future so that customers who do not receive a Genetic Group can still learn something meaningful about where their ancestors may have lived geographically. I believe this would make the Indigenous American section even more informative, educational, and rewarding for many customers.
