  • The First Read Later App I Had and Still the Best

Back in 2010, I started my journey with Instapaper and I loved being able to find time to read articles in my busy day. The app had a simple interface and I loved picking up with an article where I left off.

I can't remember why I stopped using the app.

What brought me back to it was Tiago Forte's mention of it in his book, "Building a Second Brain." The app continues to keep its simple interface and has excellent new features, such as syncing highlights and notes to Evernote and allowing you to email in things you want to read later.

Simple, easy to use, with rich features.

  • One of the apps I depend on most

Don’t use many, but this is one of the apps I depend on most.
  • Deleted everything

Very unreliable! Today this app just randomly deleted everything—all my saved articles and archived articles for no reason :/
  • Excellent reading app to improve focus

I've used various apps to strip away the visual noise from online reading and so far Instapaper has the best user experience for lightweight speed reading. It's main downsides so far are that it sometimes cannot download and parse articles and the spoken audio seems to only work with iOS's built-in narrators (i.e., none of the English ones are enhanced or natural sounding). The speed read feature is a pleasant surprise. I found it easy to jump into despite never having used anything like it. Performance-wise, Instapaper will likely save battery life since it is smooth and cuts away all the ads from Web articles. Overall, it is worth a try for faster reading and retention.

  • Indispensable for saving articles to read later

I use InstaPaper to save all those assorted articles to read later, especially when I’m accompanying the wife to go shopping. 😁 It strips away most junk and leaves a clean reading experience. On occasion, it also removes illustrations from the document though.
  • Great

Very useful and time-saving. Great work. Don’t change it!
  • Great app. Two suggestions

Great app that I’ve been using for several years now. The app hasn’t changed much for several years, but it’s been regularly maintained so I’ve never experienced bugs despite all the iOS updates. Technology has improved during that time, though. So here are two suggestions for improvement: (1) The speak function uses Apple’s and it’s rather bad compared to what is offered now: unnatural and it does not pay attention to the structure of the text (paragraphs, etc.). (2) speed reading could be improved: for example with the possibility to summarize the text (using AI, or simply making a summary with the first sentence of each paragraph), it could also use so-called “bionic” characters which makes it easier for the eyes to jump from one character to another.

  • Almost there

Firstly I like this app, it’s stable and user friendly. But Premium doesn’t go far enough for regular/advanced users. Kindle push is great along with the share/email to app options. They just seem like “quick fix” add-ons however with no customisation or further development. For example being able to create emails per folder for different content types, such as long reads vs short reads, daily vs monthly newsletters and work/study vs personal. These – and iOS Shortcuts as others mentioned – should all be options to make this a app a real productivity hack for 2023

  • Still a go to app

I tend to save any web articles I want to read that are longer than a few paragraphs to Instapaper so I have the benefits of the clean reading layout and the app remembering my position across devices. Folders are a great way, too, to save things like recipes
  • Doesn't seem to be actively developed anymore

The app is doing an okay job and the premium subscription is fairly priced but unfortunately it seems like the developers are no longer actively focusing on the product compared to peers (like Pocket or Matter). The app design feels slightly dated, it is cumbersome to highlight (not possible without multiple taps), there is limited scope for customisation (e.g. opening links outside the in-app browser, not showing another open/save/copy menu first) and no integration with the iOS shortcuts app. New features haven't been added in a long time.
