  • Love Instapaper

I really love Instapaper and have used it off and on for several years. I stopped using it a few years ago just because I didn’t have the time to curate news articles for myself.

However, luckily I am able to do that easily again. My only complaint is that I wish they would make some kind of indicator on the individual folders about whether or not there are unread articles in the folders.

Other than that I have zero complaints.

  • Multi platform makes this essential

I jog between Windows and Mac platforms as well as iOS. Having something I can store useful webpages to follow up later with is absolutely fantastic. Sure, I could propose some additional functions – but frankly, this is a great app and I’m seriously thinking about setting up the monthly subscription to utilise the additional functionality of search and annotation.

  • Don’t like new update

I love Instapaper and use it everyday, but the change in saving is super annoying. They changed it from a bar at the top to a full page screen, which makes it hard to put the saved article into a folder one-handed (which I usually am). Also while reading, when you exit the app then go backup it, the placement of the article always changes. So developers you should fix that and change back the saving process to a small bar on the top of the screen instead of full screen.

  • Too much fluff, not enough work on the parser

The text parser is far from the best on the market at this point — Apple‘s own Safari reader does a better job of stripping down articles, as does the parser in Fiery Feeds. I regularly use the ‘Report Problem’ button, but never see improvements of clutter or missing image issues.

Worse, the new share sheet extension is a step backward.

First, you often have to open the share sheet multiple times just to get the Instapaper extension to show up.

Second, what used to be a one tap process with a delay is now a screen-blocking process that requires one swipe to clear the screen and a second tap to dismiss the share sheet itself. I can’t think of a single other extension that works this way, but it feels more cumbersome than the old way, which made you wait but at least didn’t require multiple gestures to dismiss.

  • Abandoned

Very little has changed in years. It feels like the app has been abandoned and left only in maintenance mode. At least there’s been a recent update where they made saving faster (finally!). I’d very much welcome more of these improvements and I’d love to pay $$$ to get more out of it. I wish the app loaded faster, search was better, the app showed and loaded more articles, removing fluff from pages was more accurate, the app showed me similar articles from my archive after I finish reading an article, articles were tagged automatically, and *most importantly* I wish I could export, backup and sync my articles including notes and highlights.

  • A suggestion: Smart Folder Icons

I’ll start by saying this is a 5 star app - I’ve chosen 4 just to get the developer’s attention so they read this.

I think it’d be nice in the column of custom folders if there was a visual distinction indicating whether or not any unread articles are in that folder at present. You could keep this feature reserved to just the default folder symbol: if there were no articles left in the folder, it’d look like it does now. If there were unread articles in the folder, the folder symbol could show a couple pieces of fake paper in the folder, or be “filled in” with color somehow. If people use other icons for each folder then they’d be out of luck. But I think it’d be really nice to know just at a glance if you’ve already cleared a folder of unread content. At least one of the folder icons should or could be “smart.”

  • Pagination issues finally fixed

Yeah thanks for that 8.0 update 😃
  • Really helpful

I have used Instapaper since it first came out, when one man originally developed it. This app has been an absolute staple for me. I used to rate it five stars. So why only two now??? Because there is one feature that all the other competitors recognize that Instapaper doesn’t account for. Permanency! The others are about same price but they have the option to store the article content, not just a link. Storing a link means you loose articles over time as links break. So if you’re using this as a library of knowledge to reference, no bueno. If you’re just using this as an actual ‘read later’ and you’re pretty much ditching the content later... okay no prob for you. But I’m willing to bet the majority of users are in the first category.

  • Concerned developers have given up

No updates for 5 months, no ios 14 updates. App needs work especially the pagination feature. Developers have stopped replying to emails and I wonder if thier work at Pinterest is a problem.
  • Needs an iOS 14 touch-up

This app is a must-have IMO, but is a little long in the tooth now.

The main issue I have with it now is that it’s slow to be shown on iOS 14’s Share sheet. I used to be able to quickly tap “Share” and tap Instapaper’s icon from any web page. Now, I have to open the Share page, close the Share page, and then re-open it in order to share to Instapaper. This is a real killer; this was a main way I queued content. Without snappiness here, this is restricting my usage of the app.

The text to speech feature could use some TLC (“74M” is read aloud as “seventy four emm” instead of “seventy four million”). I’d also love the ability for the Speak feature to auto-archive at the end of each article

It feels like scrolling has got a bit janky in iOS 14?

Overall, a great app, a must-have, just needs a fresh kick of paint!
