  • Timeless classic

Once you give it a chance and get used to the controls it's brilliant. Great little hack and slash dungeon crawler, old skool style. Well done to the developers! :)
  • Good port but could be much better

I played the original long ago and would spend countless hours in my schools computer lab. After I got older I missed the hours of simple entertaining fun trying to make it deep into the dungeon.

This game falls way short from other ports I have played and like another said there doesn't seem to be a difference between classes other then graphics. The Mage can't cast etc and I want me monk. Honestly I would like to see labyrinth ported over. It's freeware with open license on the pc. It's also true to the classic with a graphical interface.

Over all it needs work and more polish

  • A classic

One of the first games I ever played, rogue may be dated but it is still great fun. Interesting swipe controls add to the fun.
  • Good stuff if ...

...You like games like nethack/angband etc.

The guestures to accomplish tasks is very interesting ((I wonder if the programmer had a palm?)).

Personally, I would have preferred an option for an "on screen" keyboard or buttons as an alternative choice to the command system.

Oh, and the font isn't very dungeony IMHO.

Other than that, prepare to get addicted old school style.

  • A great version of the classic game

This is a very faithful recreation of the original Rogue game. The developers have obviously spent some time converting the input to the iPhone's touch screen controls, and the result is pretty entertaining. This has become one of my favourite games to play. Well worth downloading.
  • classic dungeon crawl fun!

Evolutionally speaking, Rogue is that fish with leg-like appendages that first walked upon land - a direct ancestor of Diablo and World of Warcraft. The graphics mode is a nice touch to keep it fresh for modern audiences, though I prefer ASCII mode. While there is definitely room for improvement and simplification of the game, I'm sure gandreas software did everything it could within licensing limitations - this is a port, after all. Rogue's difficulty reflects a realism that most of today's games lack. When you die, you're dead - start over from scratch. Everything is working against you. Only a combination of your wits, good planning, and extraordinary luck will see you through to a winning game. I've never won, and I'm not sure I ever will. But God help me, I can't get enough of it.

  • Great implementation of gestures!

While it does take a while to learn, the gesture system is great and surprised me with it's ease of use once you learn it. I was expecting the learning curve to be much steeper but once you get the basics down it becomes very intuitive.

I only hope he expands on the game itself. A crawl version of this would make my life complete. Being able to tie into a server like c.a.o. would only be icing on the cake.

If you don't know what rogue is, try it on a pc first and learn the basics.

  • Very Well Done

When my friend said "I found this cool game called Rogue" I thought it was too good to be true. I used to play this game all the time. To be able to play it anywhere is great!

The controls are well done although it can be kind of annoying to walk to the mid section of a room since the run feature makes you keep going. Small issue outweighed entirely by how great this game is. It would be really cool if they ported NetHack because the class system really makes things interesting.

    Well done!

  • Good port, but there are a few minor bugs.

This is a decent port of a great game, and it really gives me hope that we’ll see more complex roguelikes such as nethack or moria sometime soon. I have run into a couple of bugs, particularly with directional commands such as "zap" and "throw" — especially "throw." Sometimes "throw" just accesses the wrong item completely or suddenly jumps to a different command menu (usually asking what item you want to eat). These bugs are frustrating, but the game is still playable. Hopefully they’ll be fixed in an update soon. [This review was written on December 2, 2008 -- if the app has been updated since then these bugs may have been fixed.]
