  • Oh tumblr..

Personally, I love tumblr. In the beginning it was phenomenal. As far as social media platforms go, tumblr was a safe place to voice whatever was on your mind (and really it still is.....but). For myself, tumblr was the place I could go to really be myself. I could reblog, post, and like whatever I wanted without worry of judgement. It was the only platform I could go to truly post whatever my heart desired. I still consider it my safe space, but since the policy changes that took place around New Years It just doesn’t feel the same. There used to be so much honesty, humbleness, and raw, originality amongst the community. I feel the policy changes constricted and controlled the rawness of the community’s atmosphere. It doesn’t feel as freeing and unique as it once did. Also, since the changes there’s an insane increase in random sketchy porn accounts that follow and try to contact you (I didn’t have a problem before the changes, but now I’ve got porn bot accounts trying to follow my personal account all the time, and the other tumblr users I’ve talked to are experiencing the same issue).

I don’t know man, I just feel like the tumblr now is not at all as great and original as it used to be. It used to feel like we (the community) were one big ol awkward family, and now it’s almost overrated and it’s losing its originality.

Hoping the staff sees this (doubt they will), I just feel like this concern should be voiced somewhere.

In the long run though, if you’re new here and thinking about joining the community, do it. It’s worth it. There’s a place in my heart for tumblr, it’s helped me through some rough patches for sure.

  • An Honest Review

That one star isn’t there for the reason you’re probably thinking.

The app itself does leave much to be desired, and for some, it has become an app that holds the title of ’Most Downloaded App And Then Deleted Afterwards’. It’s community varies, sometimes pleasant and sometimes downright violent. On the same line, the app has a constant stream of content that is inciting and wonderfully diverse not due to the developers but more to the people who produce and consume the content directly from the app.

It’s why it has that flip switch where some days you hate it and other days you love it. However, it is due to this sporadic behaviour from the staff and from their odd focuses on details that limit the extent of this app’s functionality. The app’s community has allowed a brilliant mindspace for all kinds of creators and producers. Its value is diminished by the capabilities of its current holders. I ask that for the sake of those creators, producers and consumers that action is taken accordingly following the input of the multiple complaints that I know have made their way to you and adapt appropriately to the app’s existing structure to further your success.

As for others reviewing this app as a consumer, I do advise you to look into this app, not because of its design but because of the wondrous expanse of content that you can find that matches your interests. You will find without a doubt that you are most certainly not alone within this app’s community.

  • :(

This app is... frustrating on a good day. When everything seems to be functioning properly, it’s fine but that so rarely happens anymore. So many things go wrong on any given day, it’s hard to keep track. Right now, asks seem to be busted for me and several others. We’ve gone through batches of “test asks” to see if they’re sending and receiving properly, after noticing a lack in our normal ask activity. I’ve also noticed a lot of trouble with posts disappearing after hitting send, not postings at all, connection issues, replies not showing up, and more. Most of this was noticed prior to the update but have shown no improvement after updating. I’ve had numerous issues with the app, especially after the December 2018 update. Please please please take your user base into account in a more interactive and comprehensive way. I’m sure you’re doing your best, but I think it’s time to re-evaluate your tactics. I’ve seen nothing but complaints about user interface for years now (to the point where it’s become a sarcastic joke) and a huge lack of addressing those issues from staff. I can’t see myself not using the app for good, just bc it’s where so much of my own following and work is. But I do frequent it less and less, due to these issues. So only two stars for now. Hoping to bump it up in the future.

  • ‘Open in app’ not working?

So I was on twitter and there was a tumblr link which opened when I clicked on it but said ‘go to my dashboard’ instead of showing the content. When I followed that ‘go to my dashboard’ link it opened up the App Store even though I already have the app? So then I tried opening the link in safari instead and tried to press the ‘open in app’ option at the top and when I did it took me to the app... for half a second, and then went out and back to the safari tab. Every time I tried ‘open in app’ it would do so but then take me back to safari?? Which isn’t what I wanted, I want to stay in the app and I want the link to open the content in the app
(I checked the tumblr page I was trying to go to, to see if it was still up and it was, so it’s not the tumblr page that is the issue I don’t think)
    Thanks

  • Love the people, hate the app

I love the idea of Tumblr as a site, and the app initially was amazing to be able to use. In the last few weeks/months it has become increasingly frustrating to use. The 18+ ban has done nothing to actually remove pornbots from the site, and has only made life harder for artists and writers. The app has also started to crash every 10 minutes, which leaves me with a blank screen before the app closes and my feed resets, leaving me with few new posts, but 10 minutes of content to scroll through.

  • I love Tumblr, I hate this app

This app has so many issues that have yet to be solved after at least a year or two of them existing. Despite the messaging system, which I’m sure has been critiqued plenty, inconsistently and unreliably updating or not updating while you’re using the app- you also can’t click on asks or even keep track of your asks in any way through the app. If you want to go look at one of your apps, you had better be keeping constant track of whoever asked it because all you’re going to get is a notification, and clicking on the notification (if it was answered) only takes you to the person’s profile. The app will randomly crash for seemingly no reason, even while under little to no stress. The double-click-to-like feature doesn’t work unless you tap a large body of text or an image and even then, it may not register properly (maybe user error but still inconvenient). You also can’t keep track of submissions in any way unless you just miraculously remember- I think you get notified but I don’t even think you get that much. Aside from all this, there’s a myriad of other functionalities and nuances that are almost entirely unimportant (like how if you click on a person’s name that’s attached to a post, it’ll take you to a dedicated page with nothing but that post and a couple other posts from that person’s profile below it). This was a poorly-thought-through review but I think it covers most bases. Otherwise, it works enough.

  • Constant crashes and Removed good features

What with the plague of the nsfw thing. Tumblr was already crashing down before that, quite literally. The app constantly just shut down on me not being able to keep up with my tumblr I guess because it couldn’t load the photos or save photos thus making it hang and shut down.

Second of all, who’s idea was it to remove the manage accounts feature? A lot of people out there has more than one blog and that was actually an amazing tool that helped in managing my blogs and now I don’t even use my accounts now because of the hassle of having to log out and log back in and the repetition of having to that just to manage my blogs. I’ve started using tumblr less and less. Everything was so much more convenient, to manage your accounts through your phone and now you can’t do that.

Very disappointed in what tumblr has become. I hope they learn unlike most companies and listen to their audience and provide because at the rate they’re going and new competition coming up, tumblr will be a fad just like MySpace

  • Frustrating

I very rarely review apps but this one is so irritating I felt I had to just in the hopes they might read their reviews and fix it accordingly. I like tumblr and want to use it but this app is so incredibly laggy and often freezes too much for it to be even useable, it collects a huge cache within minutes which keeps getting bigger until the app takes up insane amounts of storage on my phone, so I have to go into the app settings and clear the cache literally every ten minutes while I’m using tumblr so that the app will stop lagging so much. Audio posts also are never playable (in my experience), but the most irritating thing of all is to probably how the app will refresh/crash randomly and throw me back up to the top of my feed where I could either look at posts I’ve already seen or try to scroll all the way back down to where I was. It also doesn’t hold your place if you check another app, even if you leave tumblr open in the background. Even using the web version instead of the app is a better experience even though this means I cannot reblog anything without it refreshing my feed. I like still like tumblr despite its many failings, but this app is almost completely unusable.

  • tumblr has become a terrible app

I never usually leave reviews but tumblr has gotten so bad to the point where I must complain. On mobile app, even if my wifi works perfectly fine, it will say “no post” when clearly there is. I have to frequently restart the app and shut down my phone to get it to work. It’s terrible slow and while i genuinely do love the app, you guys clearly aren’t listening to our reviews or trying to make anything any better. I read a review from a year ago and the exact same problems are still occurring for me. To be quite frank i think whoever controls the algorithms for this app needs to get their head straight and fix it asap. It’s extremely bad for the apps publicity to get such terrible reviews and i hope you guys address this serious issue before it gets too late and everyone discards this app. Major app fixing needs to be completed, no need to change the layout or anything just to make it seem like you guys are trying because that’s not what your receivers would appreciate. I hope for a great improvement soon.

  • TONS of problems

The NSFW ban in December did very little to fix the actual problem that users had with porn bots who are still everywhere on the site. In addition, blogs that post things advocating for Nazism and racism are still allowed on the site yet “female presenting nipples” are not. Tell me how that makes any sense. Not to mention with the NSFW ban they have severely crippled artists who use tumblr to get their art out and gain commissions and now they’ve limited text posts to only 100 word blocks and stopped posts with links from being shown in tags which affects the very large community of fic writers on the site. With these things, they’ve alienated almost every one of their users and made it clear that they care very little about the actual feedback that they receive from said users as evidenced by these new updates and the purely flippant way they address the emails that they receive from users that have very real concerns. As someone who has used the site for years, I’m honestly saddened to say that the way tumblr has been run since yahoo acquired it has made me and many others entertain the idea of simply leaving the site and never looking back. Something needs to be done to fix the site or else they may just run it into the ground themselves.
