  • OurGroceries does exactly what I was looking for

Great app worth the money with the right features. Our lives are so much simpler now. No more paper lists I have to bring to the store. The ability to share the grocery lists is the best. If now, someone in our family complains why I did not buy this or that, I just say, why did you not put it on the grocery list. The only small thing I do not like is usability related. The function to remove an item from the list is to click on that item. I still often click on an item because I want to update the quantity or the category of the item. That gets me every time when I want to change something about an item. It’s a small thing, otherwise exactly what we needed.

  • sept2020 thank you!

    aug2020:
i’ve used this for years and overall, it’s great. but two recent things are annoying: 1) when typing in the search bar, say for BREAD, after i’ve entered the first few characters and selected the found item, if i don’t DELETE those characters in the search field, and just hit GO, a new item is created with those letters. so then i have falsely added an item called BRE. in the past, the field cleared automatically. 2) with this update, the list items have too much space between them, like a double return as opposed to a single return. this seems like a silly thing to complain about, but it means i can see fewer items on my screen at once. now i have to scroll down to see more stuff. i liked the slightly more condensed spacing better.

these things have been fixed and are now how they used to be! i love it again, so thank you very much!

  • One of the best I’ve tried

I like a grocery app that has both a phone and a watch app. This one has that and does it fairly well. Going through the store checking your watch is easier than pulling your phone in and out and turning it on and off. This app lets you categorize products and it remembers the categories once you set them. It lets you add the same product to multiple store lists. I love the look of the app and it’s instant sync functionality.

The areas of improvement the maker should address is that I find the flow for the addition of groceries to be clunky. It would be nicer if you could start to type an item select from the matching list and straight away specify how many and the category ( if it’s uncategorized ) without having to navigate around into the info screen for the product.

I also find myself accidentally touching products to get to that information screen and instead it removes it from the list. This is counterintuitive. They should use a check box or a swipe left or right to remove the item from the list, which is more conventional. If you don’t wanna change now that you have a base of users, at least make it a preference setting for the newcomers.

Thanks for the feedback! There are settings for both things you asked for. Look for the setting "When Adding Uncategorized Item", which you can set to "Ask Me to Pick a Category" (or try the new "Pick a Category for Me" option which will pick a category automatically if possible). Read more here: https://www.ourgroceries.com/user-guide#settings_ask_for_category For crossing off items inadvertently, you can fix this using the "Cross-off Action" setting, which has several choice besides a simple tap. Try "Swipe", for example. Read more here: https://www.ourgroceries.com/user-guide#settings_cross_off_action I hope these settings will help! Feel free to contact us at support@ourgroceries.com with any other questions or feedback for a faster response.
  • Love this app.

Starting approximately two updates ago, one of my family members was struggling with this app. Like a similar reviewer, she would start typing an item we purchased in the past but when she tapped on the item in the list the app would add the partially typed item instead and ask her to categorize it.

We deleted the app and then re-added it, and after signing in everything is great again. We love the way changes to the list update in real time, so when we are at different stores each of us can see what the other has added or crossed out. It is a very user friendly app and probably one of the best apps I’ve downloaded. I paid for the upgrade to eliminate the ads and support developers. Worth every penny. Excellent all around!

  • Apple Watch App Winner

I’ve used OurGroceries for years to coordinate our family shopping list and it was great to always have my list handy on my phone where I can tap items to check them off as I find them. Then I started wearing a mask in the grocery store, which meant FaceID failed and I needed to enter my passcode constantly. I was so relieved I was able to install the Apple Watch app. I still manage my list at home on a phone or iPad, but now when I’m shopping, I check items off on my watch and never have to worry about having my face obscured. I don’t think it’s an exaggeration to say this has been one of my few pandemic bright spots!

    Two tips for watch use:

    1. Edit your list on your phone before you go to the store to put things roughly in the order you will encounter them. This saves a lot of scrolling as you shop.

    2. Set your watch to save state before you shop so you don’t need to keep re-opening the app. On your phone, open the watch app and go to General > Wake Screen > Show last app within 1 hour of last use.

  • Fast,simple, but lacking

I have a pantry inventory app that’s great. The only problem was it only scans food items, so I was looking for something where I could scan all grocery items and make lists for different stores quickly. Within minutes of downloading this app I decided it was exactly what I needed and made the upgrade purchase. The app is simple to use, easy to create multiple lists and the scanner is lightning fast.

But it lacks the ability to scan certain barcodes. Nothing I have from Aldi will scan. And since I do quite a bit of my shopping there, this is very disappointing. Had I known the scanner wouldn’t work with certain major stores barcodes I never would have purchased it. But you can’t know what it will scan until you purchase it. The light version should at least allow some sort of scanning capabilities. Because now I’ve spent $5 on an app that is virtually useless for half the stuff I buy.

I'm sorry to hear you had a bad experience with the app. The barcode scanner can be tested with the free version, and tells you whether it recognized the barcode or not. If you contact us at support@ourgroceries.com, and explain the problem with the Aldi barcodes, including a photo of one or more of the barcodes that won't scan, we can look into it for you. If we can't make it right, we'll help you get a refund.
  • Very organized

I got this app thinking I probably wouldn’t use it very long. That was a mistake. It is fantastic! I love that you can create multiple lists for different stores you frequent. It also saves the items once you enter them into a list for future use so you don’t have to re-type them. And then there’s the recipe feature. I entered the ingredients for my most used recipes and now it’s super easy to know what I need if I’m at the store and don’t know what’s for dinner! The app also stays open on the phone when using it, meaning the phone doesn’t go to sleep. I love this, so I don’t have to constantly wake up my phone in the store to see the list. If the developer needs an idea for improvement, it would be to place the “add item” at the top of list instead of the bottom so the user doesn’t have to scroll. I highly recommend this app!

  • Useful

This is the best app I have found for keeping track of stuff I need to get, but not urgently enough to make a special trip. Next time I’m nearby, I won’t have to struggle to remember stuff from months ago.

I don’t find the premium features that attractive other than supporting an app I like. What I really would like is the ability to see items on multiple lists/all lists — for items that could be purchased at any of several stores, or to see if I’ve already listed something — or even the ability to choose the item I want to add first, and then choose one or more stores where it is available.

  • Perhaps the best app that I use

We have Our Groceries installed on all of our devices, and it synchronizes instantly and seamlessly. I will be at the grocery store marking off items on my cell phone as I add them to the basket. My wife will be at home adding items on her iPad, and they appear instantly on my list. Until now, the only inconvenience was having to frequently take my iPhone out of my pocket as I shopped. Last week I started using an Apple Watch, and discovered that there is a “companion app” for the watch that allows me to see Our Groceries on my wrist. Just like the phone and pad versions, the watch version works smoothly. Our Groceries is a flawless app, and is probably the most under-appreciated app on the App Store. It even has detailed and well organized instructions on their web site. I’m going back now to the store to see if this developer has any other apps that I should be enjoying. Congratulations to HeadCode on developing such a fine product.

  • Keeping it simple

This app has helped us keep our shopping trips to a minimum. My spouse and I each have the app on our phones and can easily add items as we run low, everything from milk to toothpaste to dog treats. Whoever is running errands has the current list so nothing is missed, limiting frequent return trips to the store. By leaving purchased items on the crossed off list below, it’s easy to add items back to the shopping list the next time we need them. The crossed off list also serves as a reminder of items we routinely use in case they weren’t already added to the shopping list but will be needed. Love this app!
