  • Truly the Champ

Before I say anything else, let me assure those of you trying to decide whether your $2.99 will be well spent here or not that it WILL be! There's a reason this little gem has so many five-star reviews: it's great! Hit the 'buy' button now; read the reviews later.

    --------------------------

I love playing Hook Champ. The concept and gameplay are utterly simple, but excelling at this game is quite a challenge. The best kind of sarisfying, rewarding challenge.

Once you get the rhythm down, swinging through the caves is strangely rewarding. There's something addicting about it that you will only appreciate once you've played a few levels. Collecting idols and gold earns you improved tools, weapons, and hats. And buddy, the hat is crucial to success, so choose your chapeau wisely!

Graphics are sharp, level designs are clever, and the brief dialog interludes are unexpectedly funny. This is a game with a lot of heart.

Hook Champ is my favorite iPhone game, hands down. And that's saying something.

  • One of the Best Games in the App Store!

First off, let me say, this game is an absolute must buy, don't even doubt it! You won't be disappointed!

    Gameplay - 5/5:

The gameplay is fantastic, the darkness along with the no music in every cave just gives you that sense of danger, knowing evil is right behind you. And replay value... replay value? Well, let me put it this way, you'll probably be playing this minute after minute, hour after hour before you even beat the game, but once you do, it's still great to play through the game again, shooting for the high scores.

    Music - 4/5:

There isn't any music within the levels, though there is some on the overworld view and in the shop. It's catchy, and I love the 8-Bit style, but with what seems like a 45 second loop makes it a bit obnoxious after a while, but it's still good quality.

    Graphics - 5/5:

The first time I saw these graphics, I knew this game was going to be on my iPhone's first page. The sprites remind me of the SNES'. Beautifully drawn characters and dungeons - along with many other details - give this game a very retro feel.

    Overall - 5/5:

This is undoubtely one of the best games I have ever purchased, and is a steal at $2.99. Get it now, you won't regret it!

  • One of a Kind! Get it now!

Hook Champ for the iPhone and iPod Touch is a platform game in a league of its own. Intuitive but innovative game controls allow you to use grappling hooks to move through mysterious ancient ruins haunted by creepy monsters. You can buy upgrades from the shop to swing faster, run faster, and use better  weapons and equipment. Detailed pixel graphics allows faster loader time for the game, but at the same time, provides a distinct look and feel to the game, as with the in-game sounds.  Hook Champ is easy to pick up and play, and immensely enjoyable. The swinging experience is simply soaring!

  • Resurrection of the NES!

Spectacular! I downloaded the Lite version (something EVERY developer should offer with their product) and I was immmediately captivated. The upgrades are incredible (love the Plutocrat hat and monocle) the 8-bit NES throwback look is awesome, and the gameplay is very old-school. It's all about the placement of your hook and your momentum. I actually reccommended this to a guy behind me at a Ben Folds concert after I saw him on his iPhone. Brilliance!
    My only complaints are these:
1: When this game lags, which it rarely does, it's nearly fatal, especially on the Skull Levels. This may be a phone issue, but lags on other games have not cost me so dearly in my gameplay.
2: More music! I really support the option of playing your own music in games, but Rocketcat! You've brought 8-bit sexiness to the iPhone! The map theme is pretty bumping! Compose something for the levels, that'll get stuck in your head for days! I'm talking Ducktales-calibur! Give this game the soundtrack it deserves!!

Great job, Rocketcat! I'll be following your work with much anticipation!:D

  • Well I'm hooked...

Hook Champ has quickly become my most used app. A lot of fun, with a great sense of humour and style to burn. Great stuff!
  • A Masterpiece

Hook champ is beyond a doubt one of the best and well-designed games in the app store. It's simplicity coupled with character-building elements, secrets and leaderboards make this game a real work of art. Well done fellas, it was worth every cent :-)
  • Compulsive and beautiful

The graphics might go back to the 8-bit/16-bit era, but they are perfect for this joyous swing-and-collect-em-up. The compulsion to go back and find secrets, set record times and collect all the coins is judged just right. And the control method is perfectly judged: you know when you make a mistake that it's down to your timing, not the controls. Apparently there are lots of updates coming too: Hook Champ is one to treasure.

  • In a perfect world - A No 1 hit

The greatest gameplay achievement on the App Store. If you hate games, then you won't like this. Everyone else will fall in love with the most perfect handheld game in recent memory.
  • Fun, difficult, satisfying!

This is a tremendous app. It's easy to pick up, quick to play, and hard to put down. It's something that will take up an entire weekend, or just a few minutes when you've got time to kill. Many have compared it to bionic comando which is true. It's also a lot like rope racing in the Worms series, although far more satisfying. The only reason I'm not giving it a five star review is that there are some slight performance issues on the 3G compared to on the touch and 3GS. You might be swinging along and it drops a few frames or doesn't register a rope launch. This isn't an issue with all levels, but on some of the bull lava levels you might end up cooked.

  • Home screen game

A must buy. Great overall gameplay including sounds, physics, text and looks. Brings me back to mario days with the pixelated look. Try the lite version out, but I'm pretty sure the full app will be on your homescreen within half an hour.
