  • One of the best on the Iphone

This is an app you need to have. First of all, the screen shots don't reflect the game on the iphone. The retro feel, no matter if love 8bit or not, just makes the game 1000x's better. this game takes a while to beat, and even at that you can keep replaying it without getting bored. It's really addictive, and is one of the best on the iphone. The characters and item descriptions are also really funny. I think this is even better than the sequel which just came out just because it is unbeatable. Its fun, challenging, and funny. You will love it!!!!! You have to have it!!

  • Awesome game!

Played this game so much, long lasting playability.
  • Great Game

Fast paced, exciting gameplay all the way, though some levels can get a bit frustrating.
  • Best game of 2009 on any platform, period.

I bought an iPod touch largely to take part in the ever-expanding games section of the app store. Of the 40+ games I have played, hook champ is easily the best. The game starts out with a clever, fun premise, but builds into a brilliantly designed experience by the time you reach the game's later levels. It is very clear that, despite the game's simple look and design, a LOT of thought and planning have gone into the level design. On top of this, the game has a great, kind-of-nerdy sense of humor which really gives the little characters a lot of personality. Get this! You will NOT regret it!

P.S. Two last notes. The DLC characters are very funny, but do not change the gameplay. Don't feel like you will need them. However, you WILL want them :)

Also, the last few levels are VERY difficult. Not for the easily frustrated!

Make sure to check out the sequel also, Super Quickhook. I haven't tried it yet, but it's bound to be awesome.

  • Thank God for super quickhook

Listen, this is a great game. Great gameplay great humor and great upgrades. The only reason why I give this 3 stars is for these reasons.
1: Zelle is a ripoff. For. 99 cents you basically get a different looking character nothing else.
2: The minigore temple and forbidden hats are insanley hard. Even with hookbot they are near to impossible. The forbidden hats are insanley long and in the minigore temple you get bombarded from both sides with monsters.
3: I have almost all of the upgrades except for the special hooks. Which brings me to my final point, everything is too expensive!!!! The only reall way to get a lot of money is to beat a level for the first time. Which for me insanley hard because I have beaten all levels cept for minigore and forbidden.
Final: My advice to you is that you should save your money and get super quickhook which is supposed to come out on the 18th and is a sequel to hook champ.

  • Beautiful 8-bit goodness

I don't remember how I stumbled upon the lite version of this app but I am glad I did. Think along the lines of classic side-scrollers like bionic commando or pitfall. This game will take you back.

I love the controls and could swing around all day looking for hidden items! Well worth $3 (what I paid).

UPDATE: Dropped my rating from 5 to 3 stars. I bought Hookbot, but another paid character already? Are the new levels even beatable without the new character? And why is Hookbot getting chased? Give me what I paid for!

I will say that I am a huge fan of this game, but this last update might as well be called Hookchamp: Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Stealing idols...in space? You've taken it too far and forgotten what makes the game great. I have the #1 local score on all 28 levels, and I can say with certainty that these new levels are too hard. Changing the gravity, having a chaser that goes twice your speed, getting killed just for rocketing too high? For me, this has sucked all the fun out of it.

If you ever make Hookchamp 2, please don't let it be anything like this. Get back to basics: witty banter, plenty of hats, and good, clean, swingin' fun.

Update 2: in-game link to super quick hook is broken! And why not call it super hook champ? Seems a lost opportunity for brand recognition there.

  • Great

Awsome! Can't wait for super quick hook
  • Perfect Game for the iPhone

This is exactly the kind of game I was looking for on the iPhone. Simple controls yet the actual control mechanics have a ton of variety with excellent response. The hook-swing element is fun enough but the goofy pixelated monster following at all times is genius. Adds just enough tension to get you going. Some later levels add lava and other hazards that definitely up the challenge(i blew through some of the earlier levels. Still fun though). Also, the option of going against a ghost of your best level time is fantastic as well. My only complaint would be how scores are calculated for a level. The score seems heavily tied to finding treasure vs. the speed with which you can finish a level. Given that you get awards for the highest score for a level(beating developer scores), it'd be cool if there were also times to try to beat as well. I feel there's much more skill/fun there than finding treasure. That's just me though. I'm addicted and looking forward to their next release(hopefully this friday). Cheers!

  • I don't get it

I don't really see why this is so popular. The graphics are very cute, and the controls are simple and well-executed, but the pace is far too slow to carry such shallow, lightweight gameplay. Just dumbly firing off your grappling hook without looking where you're going will get you through lots of levels, and there are almost no in-game hazards other than the clock. If you're looking for a rope-swinging type of game, Mr AahH! is vastly more entertaining and a third of the price.

  • Awsome game but need help with...

How does the grappling cannon work? It hasn't done anything for me yet... Great game anyways but needs some new ideas.
