  • Deep and Detailed, Rough Learning Curve

King of Dragon Pass gives you control of a clan. Numerous random events occur, and you must decide how to deal with these events. Most important decisions are made in dialogue trees, while other aspects of running your clan (balancing farmers vs. hunters, raiding or sending emissaries to other clans, etc.) are handled in menu screens. There is no animation. All gameplay is turn-based.

Overall, the game is solid and fun. Reading the long manual is absolutely critical for understanding how the game is structured and how to win. It takes a few play-throughs, but eventually, I felt like I began to understand and appreciate more of the inner workings of the game. The game does have downsides which keep it from getting 5 stars, including the very rough learning curve, the fact that you can sometimes be badly harmed by the random number generator (particularly on heroquests), and the fact that the endless parade of random events affecting your clan or tribe eventually become somewhat repetitive. Also, as a person who has never played the HeroQuest pen-and-paper RPG, it took me quite a while to get to know the multitude of different gods, what they all stood for, and their places in the mythology (all of which you have to learn to make good choices and complete heroquests in the game).

  • Outstanding

This is a little gem of a game, for those of us bored to tears with the current crop of bland and derivative pap. As others have said, it takes time to get into and will not appeal to anyone who does not like reading, but it does offer a rich and compelling experience.

A point someone made below was that it needs a 'save' function. Not sure if it was added or the reviewer missed it, but the game saves at the end of every year and you can restore to that point whenever you like. This is not game that should be save-reloaded though in my opinion, dealing with the tough times are what makes it fun, not reloading every time something bad happens.

My one criticism is that some events seem to come up more regularly than I'd like. I've had some happen three or four times so far and it takes some of the mystery out of it if you know what's coming. Minor point though, this game is well worth the time and money.

  • Woop

Great game! Totally worth it if you liked Choose-Your-Own-Adventure books as a kid. Only issue is results can seem arbitrary and luck-based sometimes, can't tell if that's actually the case so some actions and choices end up feeling less important.
  • Great story, strategy and very rewarding

I love this game, it feels like a grand strategy game and with great stories and so many things to do in game. I think I will replay this game over and over again.
  • Fantastic! Like nothing else on the app store!

King of Dragon Pass is one of those games that is completely unlike any of its peers. KoDP is a roleplaying game in the strictest sense: set in the mythical realm of Glorantha, you control a tribe after it moves to a new realm. You will encounter strange magicians, mysterious elves, gods old and new, and will interact with other tribes trying to survive - and conquer.

All major events in the game are dealt with "Choose Your Own Adventure" dialogues, with no wrong answer. Your actions may have positive effects on your farmers but negative effects on your warriors, or you might risk alienating a friendly clan in order to gain a magical artifact.

The bottom line is that this game is well-worth your time, and is one of the deepest, richest experiences on the app store. Expect to sink at least 5 hours per individual game, with excellent replayability.

  • Not for everyone

I love role-playing games, but haven't really found I'm able to enjoy this one. I find the game is so complex that I spend most of my time worrying about what I should be doing next. Additionally, I find it very difficult to figure out what types of actions will have a positive result, which I think makes the gameplay frustrating.

Obviously, this is only my opinion; based on the reviews, it's clear that many people enjoy it.

  • A Fantastic Adventure in Glorantha

King of Dragon Pass is one of those beautifully unique games that you will never experience the like of anywhere else. The artwork is distinct and wonderfully evocative, coupled with gameplay that is nothing short of downright addictive.

The experience presented in the game is a wonderful window into the world of RuneQuest and HeroQuest, and the Orlanthi Barbarian lifestyle that so often is the focus of those games.

The translation onto the smart phone market was a natural move for this type of game. The controls are easy to use and the enhanced interface and tutorial explanations are a marked improvement over the original PC release.

Hopefully this game will inspire new love for a fantastically fun setting.

A definite must for your game app collection.

  • Ingenious game

This is an ingenious game because it fits the smartphone style so well.

The game overall is a turn based game set in the fantasy world of Glorantha. Your tribe has settled Dragon Pass and you have to expand your lands and reputation through magic, diplomacy, war, trading and so forth. You lead your tribe through thick and thin to try to become the King of Dragon Pass (by beating everyone else, obviously). Play is at the clan and tribe level, although you can direct individuals in your tribe to take action.

The turn based system is nice because on the one hand, you have a large overarching storyline that ties the game together and lets you play over days or weeks, but on the otherhand, the actions available per turn can be quite simple, so it lends itsself for playing whenever you have a spare five minutes. There is a really nice balance there.

    Highly recommended, outstanding game.

  • Very surprised....

Ok.... I am a young(ish) female who has never played these sorts of games... I am more of a broken sword kind of girl. But.... As I like the fighting fantasy adventure books I thought 'why not?' as soon as I downloaded I thought I had sorrily wasted my 6.99, it seemed complicated and a bit too much hassle! So why have I not put it down all day?? Because it is not that complicated, there is all sorts going on which just adds to the interest! I love it and I am so pleased I bought it! I thought the previous reviews were left by the creators or their friends and in the first 5 mins I was cursing my poor choice! I can't even describe how good it is you will just have to take the chance and find out....
