  • A fantastic, special game!

What a fascinating and thoroughly enjoyable experience! There really is nothing else like it on any platform; a clever blend of empire building strategy, RPG and Gamebook. The depth of gameplay and strategic decision making is really quite impressive, perhaps a little overwhelming at first but the elegant UI makes it a breeze to navigate between all the options and tools available to manage your clan. The turn based nature is also perfectly suited to dipping in and out of the game on a mobile device and it's accompanied by a good tutorial to ease you into the basics and a complete manual on hand for reference.

I really can't quite put into words just how successfully this game manages to blend together its different elements. It's a great, in-depth strategy game, a great simulation and a great adventure seamlessly combined into one massive game.

If you're the kind of gamer that has an interest in strategy games and also likes the idea of a well writen text heavy adventure then you absolutely have to get it - this game is made for you. Frankly I would happily pay more than twice the price, because games this special come along far too rarely.

  • Absolutely fantastic

I'd played the original on the PC many moons ago, but I consider this release superior in almost every way. The UI, though clunky in comparison to the native iOS UI, is nevertheless miles ahead of the unforgiving and weird late '90s design of the original (the buttons are labeled with WORDS, not just crude pictograms! Amazing!). New players lacking this point of comparison might understandably feel a bit frustrated by the small tap targets and finicky horizontal menus.

The GAME itself is practically beyond critique. The art is beautiful, your decisions have actual consequences months, years, or generations later, and your clan ring will make you grumble with their equivocating and waffling until your Trickster takes the initiative and hits one out of the park. Every one of those little mugshots has a personality, and the world oozes with myth.

Also, you always, always, always need a Trickster on your ring. This is as true now as it was in 1999.

  • Clever, deep game

Story, strategy, roleplaying the head of a medieival-style barbarian clan - KODP has it all!
  • Very fun and unique

I was unaware of King of Dragon Pass when it was released on PC and Mac in 1999, and I'm glad that it has been ported to The iPhone so I could see what I was missing.

The game world is very detailed, and the artwork adds to the atmosphere. There are no "correct" choices to be made in the game. Many choices have mixed results, and sometimes the game presents you with scenarios that seem to have no good solutions. This, combined with the large number of concerns to manage add a great depth to the game, but also make it very difficult.

In this way, King of Dragon Pass is very much a product of it's time, but also manages to be ahead of it's time. It's large number of options and requirements stand out from the more streamlined game designs of today, but the depth of its simulation rivals that of modern games. I definitely recommend it if you aren't afraid of a little complexity.

  • Amazing remake for a classic game

One of the best strategy games ever, successfully ported - feature complete - to iOS. All the complexity of a desktop strategy game AND the unique storytelling and role-playing approach is good enough, but the redesigned UI makes it even easier to play than the desktop version. Anyone who enjoys strategy games, especially those not usually seen on the App Store, should give this game a look.
