  • Gets more annoying with age

It seems that as this app matures its developers go to great lengths to make me want to delete it. It’s been my go to for news for a long time now, but the autoplay of videos is terribly annoying. Now the full screen ads that have been added not only play video but loud audio that doesn’t stop when you’ve flipped past it. I’m seriously just a couple more annoying video ads away from saying goodbye to Flipboard and hello pretty much anything else.

    Update
After only an automated response from the developer, and a long succession of loud ads when my volume is off, I have respirated to uninstalling flipboard after many years.

Thank you for your review. Unfortunately, there is no way to manually disable videos from playing within stories. If this is not the case, please select "Contact" at flip.it/help

  • Ads play with sound even with mute on

Great aggregator, but the prevalence of ads in the news feed has been ramping up constantly. The worst offense is that now video ads will play with full volume even when silent mode is on. Not appreciated. If this issue persists, I’ll switch to another app.

  • Totally ridden with advertisments!

Update Oct. 24, 2019: Again, although the format and style of this app is great, it is so filthy ridden within advertisements that it is rendered almost unusable. You often have to wait a very long time for an article to become readable as the multitude of ads and pop-ups load. Sometimes there are so many ads loading that the article hangs and never becomes readable. This is not necessary. Other apps, such as Microsoft News seem to be able to include advertising without interupting the articles or being intrusive. Flipboard authors try to blame this on external sites that they have no control over. Baloney! Clean this up Flipboard and you could be a model for a fine app. As it is, it stinks.
    ————————————————

I really like the format of this app. The sources of news for special interests seem unmatched. However, I am totally fed up with the constant bombardment of ads popping up all over the place often popping up over an article that I am trying to read. Often the way to dismiss the ads is not obvious and is very frustrating. Also, too many partial articles that are interupted by a statement that if you want to read the entire article, you need to subscribe to this source.

There are too many competing apps out there that don’t subject you to this much advertising.

I have finally deleted this app.

  • When will “Sign in with Apple” be available for Flipboard?

Love the app, but any five star app need “Sign in with Apple”.

Displaying a Sign in with Apple button in your app or website means that people can sign in or sign up with just a tap using the Apple ID they already have, and skip filling out forms, verifying email addresses, and choosing passwords. Sign in with Apple provides a new, more private way to simply and quickly sign into apps and websites while giving people a consistent sign-in experience they can trust and the convenience of not having to remember multiple accounts and passwords. In cases where you choose to ask for a name and email address, people have the option to keep their email address private and share a unique, random email address instead. For developer guidance, see AuthenticationServices.

Sign in with Apple makes it easy for people to authenticate with Face ID or Touch ID and has two-factor authentication built in for an added layer of security. Apple does not use Sign in with Apple to profile users or their activity in apps.

  • Like the concept but..

I like the Flipboard idea, but recently am using it less because all articles are like ‘the one thing you must do to stay happy’ or the ‘17 things to avoid to be a winner’. This turns me off and I found other sources of news.

  • Give us ad controls

Flipboard is great. I use it for the majority of my news reading.

    But there is a problem.

    Ads.

Not just any ads. I want to be perfectly clear here, ads in and of themselves are fine. What I take exception with are ads that hit you with disgusting images.

I don’t need to see graphic images of “20 years of earwax” being removed while I’m eating breakfast.

I don’t need any information on toenail fungus or any gross images of nasty foot diseases.

I don’t need to see an image of five mice with their necks snapped in a trap.

Why can’t we block specific ads? As I noted above, I am not opposed to ads. Sometimes useful ones even come up and I click on them. But we ought to be able to insulate ourselves for imagery that makes us want to hurl.

Short of engaging parental controls and blocking these sites through Safari, we’re stuck with them randomly showing up on Flipboard.

Flipboard, fix this. You deserve five stars, but until I can block disgusting images, you get one.

Update! Wow! Now an ad keeps popping up for “Truthfinder” a website that helps you find out “if they’ve been cheating”. Great! So useful (a sarcasm font would be helpful here). It’s also great that it looks like an ad for porn. Scratch using Flipboard at work, in a public place, at home, or really anyplace where you wouldn’t want someone passing behind you to think you’re looking at porn.

    Please fix this.

  • Lost its simplicity with adverts in articles

I must admit my review below prompted a fast response and I’m going to give the suggestions a try. Here’s hoping that the app remains because it’s been on my iPhones for many many years. *i shall be reporting adverts from now on.

Once upon a time in an innocent world where adverts were placed at the top or bottom of an article Flipboard worked beautifully. Now unfortunately many years when you click to visit the site , the site will often have a pop up advert and with one touch your off flipboard , safari has opened and your faces with the advert web page. Close safari and back to the article and scroll down to find another small box or advert stopping you from reading. After this has happened on a few articles you get fed up and decide you can’t be bothered reading anymore. It’s such a shame that flipboard cannot reformat the articles simply or arrange to have the pop up adverts stopped or removed . I wouldn’t pay for an advert free site , but quite frankly the sites themselves are loosing viewers too. I’m boarder line ready to uninstall this .. a successful format has been ruined.

We apologize for the pop-up ads and redirects. Some sources may open their content to external ad networks that monetize from pop-up ads. Try using our in-app reporting tool. Tap ⋮ , select Report, choose the "Intrusive Advertising" option. This will hide the article from your feed and flag it for our team to review. Thanks!
  • Cookies cookies advertising GDPR - madness

This app has got to a state of pure madness. Nearly every page I visit requests to track me in some way. The need to accept cookies from so many sources per page is crazy. One information provider I just removed had 36 different cookies to read one article ...!
Then there are the conditions they just assume you’ll click accept to. I’d really suggest reading these before tapping the oh so easy accept and save button.
I know this is free content you provide but the price is starting to get too high and too hidden as to why you need all this information.
Data harvesting is starting to become the norm but the extent is worryingly in you face(book) with Flipboard recently.

  • “Comments”

Flipboard is great. However...they may want address how many user comments are legitimate thoughts written by actual readers. Many comments connected to articles appear to be written by users with little or no flips, likes, or magazines...perhaps indicating no real investment into the app or no desire to actually read articles...they only want a venue to
help foster disagreements. Many of these comments look purposely incendiary. Considering that many of these articles go on to be posted on Facebook or Twitter, Flipboard may want to do its part to curb bots and “fake news” and encourage legitimate discussion rather than fostering division. Commenters who actually have flips or magazines are few and far between, indicating an overwhelming number of commenters are not real accounts. Flipboard, please solve this, you have a responsibility to NOT contribute to division.

Addition: The comments are now even more prevalent and, if you can believe this, more negative and divisive from both sides. These commenters haven’t even read the articles! It’s ridiculous! These are definitely bots or trolls meant to drive up anger. Flipboard replied to my last review that I could “report” these users. Are you kidding me!?!? I’d have to report ALL of them on every article. How is this responsible of you as a company?!?! What are you doing to curb this besides putting it on the onus of your legit users to “report” every single fake user?!?!
