Excellent App and Service
While I am extremely happy with the app, which does all that it is claimed to do, it is the support that is superlative. I had an issue linking my phone and ipad. Peter was more than helpful. There was NO issue with the app, the problem was a new setting in IOS14/15, which in an abundance of caution I checked off. A simple click of the button and all is well. Best drawing and painting aid for all levels of artists
I have used this app for some time now and find it the absolute top app for assistance with art work . The back up help is just amazing...new features being added all the time and the management take a personal commitment to giving guidance and instruction to all users. There are other apps which seem to be poor copies of camera lucida available but none anywhere near this original.Show lessken cowe

Thanks, Ken! Indeed, there are now a host of apps that have copied (some more successfully than others) the functionality of Camera Lucida. But, I continue to review their functionality and I like to think no other app even comes close! Camera Lucida is written to be a tool for artists - so I take the approach that above all a person's drawing should take center stage, not the app. With regards to "the management" you mention, it's just me, Peter Moeykens, a normal guy with two kids, a dog and a real lack of drawing talent! If there's something you don't like, it's my fault and you're free to contact me within the app to offer suggestions for improvements, added functionality, etc. Thanks again for the kind words!Camera Lucida is awesome!
This is the best app I have found to do all the things I need as an artist. I can take my reference photos and manipulate my composition, colors, check values, print out grayscale copies, create outlines and transfer to paper or canvas, or grid the photo to hand draw it. Not to mention a ton of other options that you can do with this app. It’s the best money I’ve ever spent on an app.Show lesslucky_dancer

The creator of this app goes out of his way to help and listens to suggestions. This app not only helps you draw but let’s you see the project in many different shades. Best app for drawing, period
I use this app to get my size and perspective correct before painting. I am retired. I wanted to learn to paint but my drawing skills were marginal. I had taken a couple of botanical art classes at the local arboretum and these stimulated my interest even more. My problem has always been perspective. My drawings are always a little off and it makes my paintings look the same. I have been using Camera Lucida for a number of years and it has solved my perspective issues. I so enjoy using it. This newest release makes the setup for drawing simple. I have so benefited from using this program. It has not only kept my interest in painting alive, it has enhanced it. I can honestly say I am able to draw better because the app helped me get through the initial struggling phase. Thank you Peter for investing so much time in this app. You didn’t abandon it after you released it. You improved it immeasurably. If you want to draw, get this app.
Just a follow up. This is still my go to app. I use it to lay out my paintings. I use it to get my size and perspective correct. The auto focus is awesome and now I have been using the update to couple two Apple devices together which has allowed me to prepare larger paintings. I don’t know of another app that is cared for more by its author. It’s simply brilliant. Good instructions, good videos explaining how to use it. SO handy!
I have tried lots of apps and techniques but this is the best. I still have problems with getting the right sized image ie..not having to hold it way up with one hand and trying to trace with the other but I think that is me. Still learning how to negotiate the usability and mastery. I know I can zoom in and out but.. still can’t get the image large enough on my paper unless the camera is held WAY up.Show lessmoonmask2

Hi Moonmask2, Thanks for the review! Feel free to contact me from within the app and we can chat about how to improve the user experience. I love making changes based on user feedback. Although responding to a review isn't the best way to offer suggestions, I think in this case it might help others as well - so here are a couple of things that might help: First, if you're trying to hold your phone in one hand while drawing in the other you're going to find it's practically impossible to do. Placing your iPhone or iPad on some kind of flat surface or stand is going to give you the best results. The videos in the app show some stand ideas that don't require you to spend any money. A board bridged between two stacks of books works just fine! Second, to create larger art, one of the tricks is to be sure and pinch your image to fill your screen before you hit the "draw" button. When you do this, you're enlarging your drawing and as you do so, you'll see the image fade so you can see your drawing surface below. If you're in the drawing mode, pinching the screen doesn't enlarge the image, it magnifies the view so you can get additional detail. Finally, don't forget to use the menu option in the upper left that says "Maximize drawing size" - depending upon the device you use, this can make a significant difference. I had questions about how access photos are handled. The app’s creator got back to me immediately. He shared my concern for privacy and explained the process to me in a non-technical way while linking to the technical documents. (Bottom line is the app isn’t spying on all the photos on your phone.) He also emailed an attachment to the User Guide that my temperamental internet wouldn’t download from the app. So 5 stars for customer service even before getting to the app itself.
After playing with a few photos on it and watching a few of the tutorial videos, my initial impression app is very user friendly. I am really excited to use this tool to help improve my drawing.Show lessAyns of Lee

Ah, thanks! You made my day! For those folks reading this, I want to stress that Camera Lucida tracks nothing. It has no accounts required and will never, ever share anything about you with anyone.
