Leave a Review Mind Mapping
Promising but flawed implementation
Platform: iPad. I really want to like MindMeister. I’ve used it on the PC desktop before with great success. The iOS app looks great, the functions are what I generally want, but the implementation is frequently buggy and intrudes on efficient use. For example, pressing “Enter” to start a new node or tapping outside an active node will frequently bounce you away to an entirely different part of the mindmap, often zooming you out so far that you can’t even see the mindmap anymore and have to exit and reopen the mindmap to see anything. Another issue is when using a dark background template, when creating new nodes the background will swap back to displaying as white until you close that mindmap and reopen it again. A third bug is that when using the “attachment” option to attach a PDF to a node, every time you open and close the mindmap it will add another copy of the PDF to the node (I have one mindmap that was showing four copies of the same PDF, for example). Needless to say, these bugs really interrupt your workflow, making the app tedious to use.
Additionally, the iPad version does not do as good of a job as the desktop version in automatically orienting nodes and pathways to be easy to read. They get truly ponderous if you use it for note taking.
That said, if they fixed these bugs I’d be a mostly happy camper.Show lessA Game Changer for a Disorganized Mind
I absolutely adore MindMeister. This isn’t hyperbole—I genuinely don’t know how I ever managed anything without it. As someone who struggles with attention deficit and a general lack of organizational skills, having a tool like this is a godsend. MindMeister helps me organize my thoughts and lay everything out clearly. The range of use cases is astonishing.
Currently, I’m using it in two capacities for my website: one mind map for an entire aspect of the site and another for a different part. I plan to integrate them to enhance interactivity, and the potential I see is mind-blowing. I can’t fathom why every website doesn’t use this.
Beyond my website, I intend to use MindMeister to manage my business and even map out aspects of my life, including my health issues. So far, it’s been incredibly intuitive and easy to use. I love it. I hope I don’t come back in a few months to write a scathing review, but for now, after just a couple of weeks, I can confidently say this is only the second product I’ve ever felt compelled to review. Enjoy!Show lessMy brainstorming partner
I can access my mind maps from any of my devices, so it’s easy to jot a note. This app lets me build on that, creating all sorts of chained ideas. I can format them for all kinds of purposes, and sort them into folders. I can outline & draft whole novel scenes, which is my primary use of the program.
Mind maps work because their format is so flexible. The export functions can get more complicated. But I find the single use membership has the storage and functionality I need, so I keep it simple.
But it also offers infographic potential by importing graphics. The free level offers three maps and full function. I got along with that for long enough to realize that this is a doorway to a gamechanging novel writing technique.Show lessDeveloper Response
