  • Love SkyView! Get This App!

    Written Thursday, July 4, 2024

This app is great because (1) it has a red horizon line to separate the horizons, (2) the stars, planets, moon, sun, basically everything out there is pretty much accurate, (3) when you tap on a planet or star or anything there’s information about that tapped thing and there’s an “i” in a circle at the top right of the gray info box and when you tap on it it’ll give you more information about the thing you tapped, (4) my favorite thing is when you tap on a magnifying glass at the top right of the screen it takes you to a menu with three options at the bottom of the screen. When you tap on “sightings” there’s a list of that night’s sightings. You can tap a box next to the sighting(s) you want to see and it’ll give a notification before its time and when its time. And thanks for taking the time to read this long, lengthy review.

  • A few problems

Once I was using this app outside. The moon was bright and clear, but somehow the app said it was on the other half of the earth… Not sure if this is a general problem or just something with my settings. If it is a problem with the app, I hope it can get fixed as soon as possible. Anyway, this app is very informative and is fun to use. There are dozens of constellations I never even knew about! I recently downloaded SkyView lite, and the app was amazing. I wanted to find more things because it got pretty boring just looking at the same stars and planets. I received a telescope on my birthday and I wanted to use it but I couldn’t tell the difference between all of the objects. This app is so useful but it can have some better things. For example, I want to find a star in the sky but because I have to manually move the device, it makes me dizzy all the time and I can easily lose the star. Overall, nice app.

  • The stupid camera!

Update: Unfortunately, I was looking in the settings to turn off the camera. It’s not in the settings. The “movie camera” icon is what turns it off. I never considered it because, well, it was a movie camera icon and I thought tapping that would start recording a movie. Sheesh. I guess I need to start thinking that icons don’t really mean what they depict. lol

I gave the app more stars.
    ====================
The stupid camera is always on and trying to find anything is ruined by the camera viewing everything around you. All the constellations and planets are so faint I can’t see them unless I’m looking straight overhead at night. If I want to see where something is that’s just on the horizon (even at night) I have to try to see where it is through the camera showing me a view of my neighbor’s house. I have to cover my camera lens to see where anything is that is not overhead at night. Can’t the camera be turned off? I can’t find any setting for it. Any help with this will result in more stars. Or I just have to delete an app I paid for.

  • Addictive!

I am very much a beginner when it comes to looking at the sky. Had a nice telescope but due to my location I really needed to travel about 25 west where the area is very rural. I mean how many times can you you look at the moon(even though it fascinated eveytime). So SKYVIEW, that’s why we’re here. I can spend hours walking along A1A in Palm Beach using SkyView. Looking at stars and different galaxies. Point your camera to the sky, touch any star or planet OR tap on any space junk orbiting the earth (that in itself is overwhelming), any little dot you see which could be another galaxy. Below on your screen you will get the information on exactly what you are looking at. Very cool stuff. To think we cannot get from one end of our galaxy to the other. And there are millions of galaxies out there😳😎
We can’t be the only ones!!!
The app is great. Fun, informative. User friendly!

  • Something for All Ages

I am a recently retired attorney who, although an economics major has always enjoyed the sciences: biology, chemistry, physics and a full year of astronomy in college. Some 50 years ago, after viewing a spectacular total solar eclipse from the Delmarva peninsula in southern Maryland I got totally hooked and acquired a 3.5” Questar Maksutov telescope and have enjoyed it ever since since it is very portable. Even without my laptop or a nautical almanac this intuitive, lovely application enables me to identify planets, stars and other celestial objects wherever my wife and I travel. I am now looking forward to exposing my granddaughter to the joys of star gazing in the near future. Thank you for a very nice program!

  • Astronomer/Astrologer’s Best Friend!

10 STARS!!!! This is one of the most incredible and incredibly simple pieces of technology I’ve ever found!! Hours of entertaining knowledge and fun. Entertain friends or yourself, this tool will keep you busy all night(or day, if you’re bored.) You will be amazed at all of the stuff in the sky!! Stars, of course!!! Planets, rocket bodies, constellations, everything out there!!! Mad props to the makers of this app!! They did it! To use it is as simple as pointing your phone to the sky and reading your screen. Push a planet or a star and info pops up. Give yourself plenty of room to use. It is an acrobatic app once you get into it! Perhaps a VR versions is in the works so you can look hands free. It shows you what’s in the sky where you point it!! 360°, no obstacles. Just the sky on the screen. No wonder it’s called SkyView. A must get!!

  • What happened to the COMPASS???

I’m very disappointed lately. I paid for this app but I’ve had lots of problems with it knowing where anything is. It doesn’t keep the correct direction, now, even after I just set it manually (which was still not quite right) There was a compass that I could turn on, and then adjust the direction, but the compass is gone this week. I love trying to find out what the various bright lights are in the sky, but I am getting extremely disappointed with the fact that this app is getting worse every week! The app does not give an option for customer service to ask questions or report it not working correctly. So that is why I am posting this review.

  • How do you use this???

I used skyview lite and i LOVED it! It took my phone camera and compass and showed me directly what was where i was pointing my phone. So, i bought the full version. There was no tutorial, no prompts explaining anything. Even in FAQ and settings within the app i couldnt find any help. Spend 10 mins like a dummy doing a figure 8 motion with my phone in all the concievable ways i could interpret the directions. No change or prompt. Resetting the tutorial (i never even received a tutorial) did nothing. It is locked on to one singular point and i cannot navigate or move away from this point. I would have preferred to assume user error and email the developers privately for help but there is no option to do this. I do not have an old phone, everything is up to date, and the lite version worked perfectly. I wish i would not have spent the money on this because it is functionally useless to me. No recalibration or settings change or anything to help me figure out what is wrong. At this point i have to assume the app is faulty and i wish i could have my money back.

  • White bar destroys night vision in Night Mode

Great app but Apple’s white swipe bar at the bottom needs to be autohidden or colors to match the screen when in Night Mode. I used the app recently in a remote area with excellent visibility of the sky and this the night was very dark (besides the sky and stars). I used Night Mode to not affect my night vision, but the swipe white bar was blinding. I had to use my thumb to block the bright white light on the otherwise red screen. Please disable, auto hide, or recolor the white swipe bar when in Night Mode.

  • Best easy to use Astronomy App

I’ve tried out a lot of the Astronomy Apps and Skyview is clearly one of the best and easiest to use. It doesn’t have a 100 million stars that I know of, but almost anything you can actually see it covers. It’s colorful, and has the planets, stars, constellations, etc, but it also has earth’s satellites which are very interesting. It even has the Hubble Space Telescope. On top of all that, it’s a fair price. I’ve tried a lot of the Astronomy Apps, but I always go to use Skyview. The interface / orientation is easy to understand, and basically it works great
