  • Useful to track delays, tickets, and bookings but…

The app is easy to navigate which is really nice but it could really use some basic things; for example, it could use a page that you can put your train number in and it will tell you the current amenities offered by the train and where to find them, i.e. the lounge, if they sell comfort kits, etc. Or at the very least it could use an FAQ page. I had to get my questions answered via Reddit thread while actually on the train… not ideal.

Also, the app doesn’t make it entirely clear whether the train you’re on offers upgrades or not. There was an option to try the BidUp program and if an upgrade wasn’t available, the app would simply say “not available for this trip.” It wasn’t clear if it was unavailable because the train doesn’t have an upgraded selection, if the ticket I purchased didn’t allow for upgrades, etc. it would be really nice if that were made clear.

That being said, the ride itself was comfy and the crew were incredibly friendly!! I would give them a 5/5 if only I could’ve gotten a blanket! 😅

  • Love it

This is the most amazing travel app. Chat service, booking, changes... Everything is such a breeze it’s incredible. Like why isn’t this the standard?
  • Lost in Transit - Amtrak Misadventure

Navigating the Amtrak app is like solving a Rubik’s Cube in the dark, but with more frustration and fewer rewards. Just trying to check a schedule feels like a Herculean task. First, you have to log in—because why would you need easy access to basic information? But once you’re in, the app just redirects you to their web page, where you're immediately bombarded with ads for their credit card. By the time you've dodged all the pop-ups and miraculously found the schedule, it still doesn’t load. It’s like the app is challenging you to prove just how badly you want to take that train.

Honestly, I’d love to ride with Amtrak, but at this point, I could probably walk to my destination faster than I could buy a ticket through this app. I can't see how this app isn't intentionally designed for maximum frustration and time-wasting. It’s as if someone decided to create an app with the sole purpose of making you miss your train. Every button is a mystery box, a gamble on whether you’ll get where you need to be—or get thrown back to the beginning.

In short, using the Amtrak app is an adventure in futility. If you're looking for a reason to tear your hair out or just have some time to kill, this app is your golden ticket.

  • Doesn’t work

What is the point of an app that won’t actually let you make a booking? It gets to the ‘payment’ point and freezes. Happened multiple times and to my traveling partner also. Now fares have gone up and I have another bad experience with Amtrak - last time they canceled my train without any replacement offer. And don’t try to message when you are travelling, they just tell you to call. But if you can’t call, you’re stuck. Not traveler friendly AT ALL.

  • No Time Updates

At 8:30p, I got a notification via the app that my train was delayed 41 mins. The app did not update with the new time, however, it does have a red banner on the top of the screen stating the train was delayed. When I click for more details, it just gives me the original time frame information. Luckily, I also got a text message w/ the time update. Unfortunately, another notification for train delayed came through around 11:30p. But I didn’t get a text message update & the app has not updated. I have to go Amtrak’s website which wasn’t much help since my reservation information hasn’t changed. I had to Google the name of my train to get a time update. What’s the point if the app, if it is not going to update with delays. Not every train station is located in a good neighborhoods. Updating the times of departure would be helpful. The lack of a time update makes me anxious & it makes me discouraged to ride Amtrak again especially on a 9+ hr trip. What if I miss my train because the website (under my reservation) and app does not update? What if I am waiting in an empty train station in an unfamiliar neighborhood? It’s right. Please update your app & website with the right & easy to follow information. Please.

  • Why about non USA customers

Why can’t non USA citizens save their mobile numbers successfully?
  • Awful. No excuse for how bad it is.

The app crashes. It logs you out frequently and won’t remember your password or run on facial recognition. It doesn’t use a workaround that allows you to use your browser’s keychain either.

If you book an outbound and return, it will let you put both in your cart, go all the way to the end of the booking process, past several pages, before telling you that one (but not which one!) is unable to be booked because it’s sold out or for another reason. It shouldn’t display those trains in the first place. You have to rebook several times to find out which was the bad leg and it keeps displaying those trains as available!

Booked trips are difficulty to find if they aren’t day-of. Marking stations as preferred feature doesn’t work, they don’t save long term.

This is the only name in rail. It’s crazy. This app should be perfect. It should have integrations with Workday so you can export expense reports into that system directly for business travel expensing. It should let you flag trains for broken wifi. It should be pushing deals for snacks in the dining car. It should have maps of the platform that show which direction YOUR train is going so you can face forward if you’re motion sick. It should tell you whether and where there’s a quiet car on the train.

Whoever the product managers for Amtrak are should be fired. It’s been terrible for years. College interns build better apps. This is so far below travel industry standard.

  • A flawed and frustrating app.

Does the blame lie with the app or the data engine behind it? IDK but probably both. I keep using the app praying they make it better. So difficult to try to buy tickets using points. And the # of points shown is often completely wrong. But this is also often the case with their website. When I attempted to buy tix today using this iPhone 12x, pop-up windows keep appearing blocking access to clickable options - like “reverse the itinerary”. When I reverted to using the on line version. To actually buy the tix, the app refused to show the new tickets, taking about 30 minutes or more for me to be able to see the ticket. This was a last minute purchase so I needed to actually see the ticket. I really really hope they work to improve this. I want nothing more than for Amtrak to succeed but this app needs some work.

  • Portrait vs Landscape

I use this App on an iPad with an Apple keyboard attached in Landscape mode.

Therefore I only use the iPad in Landscape mode.

Recently Amtrak’s App forced Portrait mode on my iPad. Which makes the App useless to me.

    Orientation on iPad s/be optional!
  • Ticket disappeared

Woke up this morning and opened the app and there is no record of our trip to Chicago from Port Huron and definitely no ticket to return today. I am signed in.
