This story seems to be about taking things (eg light and privacy) without asking the neighbor first.
I would rather recommend to my children to ask the neighbor if they can go next door to read at his or her house. Perhaps even offer that neighbor some services in return for sharing their light, like the child in the story did with the rich man in return for books.
