  • Fix the darned bugs please!

It’s a great app for reading news, but is plagued by bugs that the dev team just does not seem to care about (I can say that, because they have been around for over a year and I have reported them more than once)
When you remove a news source from you feed or if you remove a saved story from your saved stories, a banner appears at the bottom saying “source removed” or “story removed”. The only button shown is “undo”. There is no dismiss button and no way to swipe the banner away. That would be ok if the banner went away after a few seconds, but it just lingers there day after day. Sometimes it’s just annoying, at other times it makes it impossible to read an article because it covers the accept and reject buttons of the cookie consent pages that sometimes pop up and cover the whole page. The only way to get rid of the banner is to force quit the news app. Way to go for user experience. As I said before, I reported this bug several times, but the Google News team either doesn’t care about user reviews and bug reports or doesn’t even bother reading them (which I guess is the same thing). It would take a developer about 10 minutes to add a “dismiss” button to that banner. Just do it.

  • Fix dark mode widget

Here is your 1-star for Google’s reluctance to fix dark mode widget issue. Under dark mode, the news widget will show a border on the left and right side of the widget.
  • Ads make it nearly impossible to use

I understand that a free service needs financial support and that advertising revenue is what makes free news possible. But there comes a point where the product becomes useless when overrun by popup adds and dynamic ads. Many times I’ll be part way through an article when an ad causes the article to disappear and I have to refresh, find th article, and then find my place again. Almost every article is nearly impossible to get through due to dynamic ads that change size and cause the content you’re reading to shift up or down by several paragraphs. It’s come to the point where the feed is only good for seeing headlines that you may want to investigate on other platforms. Also, there is so much useless data being processed that my phone gets hot and the battery is consumed more quickly. Hey Google, ads will only bring revenue if people use your product and see the ads. When your product is unusable, few people will see the ads.

  • Just shutter this app already

Worst news app with so much potential. First your google searches, gmail and any other google product you use absolutely factor into the news you are fed in this app. That’s not 100% bad but they fail to establish a threshold on what really matters to readers. If you search for cybertruck prepare to see 90% of the feed be about cybertruck for a week. If you tap on an article you will now see 30% more articles about that same article even if it is literally the source or a sourced article from the article you tapped on. Worst is the 3 dots by each article are specifically hard to tap on so even if you meant to block or have fewer shown you usually end up opening the article which just means you will see more articles on the same topic. This app appears to use a punishment model in that if you open any article you will now see that same article for weeks, even if new news comes out, that’s irrelevant to you bc you haven’t tapped on it yet. And the fact that you aren’t able to tap on it bc it hasn’t appeared in your feed 3 days later is probably your fault. Also ads break most articles. This app is still better than Apple News tho bc that is just like 5 articles per year or pay for every magazine you’ve ever heard of and read magazine news which is a month outdated… basically there are no good news apps on iOS so if you find a good news app never tell anyone bc it then bc awful due to greed (reddit).

  • Another low effort Google app

We all know Google quality has been steadily coming down over the course of the last decade. This app is just another example of it.
When you switch to some other app and back to Google News, the app simply resets itself most of the times making you lose the article you were reading. It would be very simple to save where the user was but that is apparently too much effort.
When you are in the Following view, then select a category and then an article, when swiping right to go back to the category the app goes all the way back to the Following view.
It does not matter how many time you tell the app that you do not want to see certain topics that often or at all. They will come back even more often than before.
These and many more issues have been there for years but Google does not care anymore.

  • No way to report issues

I'm leaving this review here because I couldn't find a way to report issues within the app. Every time that I am using the Google News app my iPhone starts overheating, so hot that it can burn my hand! This doesn't happen with any other app that I use, so it's super concerning and makes me worry that it's use is damaging my phone.
I also keep having articles crash while reading them, just suddenly saying that it isn't available. This happens frequently enough for me to stop using Google News, and ALWAYS occurs if I attempt to navigate to any other content within the news provider's site.
Quite frequently news stories that are HUGE don't show up at all under either recommended nor headlines. For example, on the day of the recent mass shooting at the Kansas City Superbowl celebration parade I had to search for articles about it because NONE were showing up on the app. So it's definitely not a very good source for breaking news.

  • A Mixed Bag of Rich Content and Frustrating Paywalls

Google News is a comprehensive and efficient news aggregator, offering a wide range of articles from various sources. As a user, I appreciate the diversity of content and perspectives it provides. However, one significant drawback is the prevalence of articles behind paywalls. It’s quite frustrating to click on an interesting headline only to find out it’s paid content. This issue interrupts the browsing experience and often leaves me feeling disappointed. Google News would greatly benefit from a feature that clearly marks which articles require a subscription, allowing users to make informed choices before clicking. This addition would enhance user satisfaction and streamline the news reading experience. Overall, Google News is a valuable resource, but this improvement would make it even more user-friendly and accessible.

  • You removed the back gesture?

It seems that the back gesture has been removed or is broken in this app. If it’s not fixed soon I will delete the app.
  • Google News is my favorite aggregated news service!

Google News is my favorite aggregated news service!

Many independant news services charge a monthly or annual subscription in order to read their articles. Luckily Google News offers multiple news outlets on the same news story so I can always find a news service to tell me something about the news worthy event I’m interested in learning about.

I’d like to see Google News offer a multiple subscription service bundle to the leading news outletsNYT, Washington Post, that would allow me to read 25 to 50 articles per month from a variety news outlets. Although I would still be seeings ads, I feel this would allow me to become better informed without have to commit to multiple and costly subscriptions needlessly.
