  • The GOAT of file applications!

The functionality of this app is incredible and has been for years.
It allows seamless integration for connecting to my NAS and networked computers, even the TV and home media equipment.
Sharing information between apps and email clients is well handled and it has always been my go-to for such.
The ability to backup data or share files to a PC is something I have never enjoyed about apple products; FE File Explorer is much more intuitive and makes backing up a breeze.

  • Problems on tvOS

On the Apple TV, the app needs to be restarted if AirPlay is used in between watching my local content. It‘s almost as if AirPlay suspends a running app and fails to resume it when done. It would be great if FE could carry on where it left off, once AirPlay is no longer active.
  • Game changer

So much faster than Apple’s Files app. Before, I couldn’t really preview media from my NAS in iOS because it was way too slow, this app is much faster, making my desired workflow possible!
  • Was good while it lasted

I’ve been using this app for a few years now and it has always been great. It has been the only app that I’ve found that actually works with my NAS. Lately though, I’ve noticed that it has been using battery in the background even when I’m not using my device. I have Background App Refresh turned off and I’ve even resorted to force quitting the app when I’m done with it, but it continues to be doing something in the background constantly. I don’t know if it’s a bug or if the app is doing something nefarious, but I no longer trust having it installed. I will have to look for a different solution.

  • Invaluable Tool

I use this, several times a day, every single day. It does everything I need it to with no fuss or annoying distractions.

This is one of the most important apps on my phone for work. I would be much less productive without it.

    Very highly recommended.
  • File Explorer Pro

Installed the pro version after using the free version for a short while, very impressed!! Accessing my files locally and on my linked equipment is key to getting the best out of my iPad. I use it every day without problems. I can recommend this app to anyone for access to their files. Much prefer using this app to the one provided by Apple, feels more robust and reliable and in a single well organised interface.

Tried a few alternatives recently but File Explorer is still my go to app for sorting/organising my files on different media.

  • Video Playback Glitchy

The lite version of this app worked really well. It played video well, had PIP, and connected with my NAS easily. Then I bought the pro version to allow MKV file playback and it all went wrong. PIP just ends up glitching the video. Background playback glitches the video. Swiping the control or notification centers down glitches the video. Fully pausing the video sometimes allows you to switch apps and go back without glitching the video. It’s ridiculous. I paid for this and now the app has to be the only thing my phone is doing or video becomes stuttered and audio gets off sync. Been like this for over a year at least

  • Great for backing up Photo files to NFS/SMB

Took a chance and purchased it. Glad I did. I am able to copy/backup IOS photos to an NFS share on my local network. This solved complicated scripting and shortcuts that may half work. Saved me A LOT of time.

Not only is the copy task fairly quick (depending on how much you're copying), you get thumbnail images on the NFS side!!! Apple Files does not provide thumbnails and is typically slow to list files in the remote location.

This app also allows you to delete the Photo files, though you still have to go to the deleted files area in Photos to permanently delete.

Happy with the ability to create folders in remote location as I'm copying (select files, go to location, create new folder and select it, then paste).

Would be nice to copy the album as a folder.

  • Great until it’s not

This would be a 4-5 star app if you could format connected drives.

Recently went on holidays, and was saving photos from an SD Card to a SSD. It worked fine the first three days, and then on the 4th day, the SSD corrupted. It happened when deleting files from the SSD.

I have no way of knowing if it was because of the app, or because there’s no way to eject drives on the phone, or the drive (it was new, and worked fine for the 2TB of usage it had already sustained back home), but long story short, with no way to format the drive again, I was left without a backup solution. I wasn’t about to go buy a new drive, because I’d still need to format it to APFS anyway so I’d be stuck with really slow transfer speeds, and it could corrupt again anyway.

I’d be really interested in amending this rating if formatting came to IOS. Either via native or third party means. There really needs to be a way to format a connected drive on IOS.

  • All is good except...

certain mp4 60fps format files playback seems to stutter with HW+ or HW. Please support more codec for smooth playback.
