### 4/5 — Doesn’t fit iPod Touch well

*2020-09-22*

I use an iPod Touch and not all the information fit the screen which makes the app harder to use. This would be a 2 star but I absolutely appreciate the fact that someone made a 5BX app as it’s simple, effective and cheap to do for great general health. Please fix the scaling for small screens.

**Developer response:** Thank you for the feedback. I have fixed the scaling problem for smaller device screens and added several other user interface refinements.

These are included in the latest version.

### 1/5 — Rubbish

*2024-02-25, version 4.2.1*

A timer and some rubbish graphics - if this was a physical product bought on line I would have returned it for a refund.
£3-99 wasted which reduces the likelihood of me buying apps in future.

### 1/5 — It doesn’t keep track of your time at each level

*2021-06-25*

It worked fine at first, but now it does not keep track of my days. I am deleting it. That is the main reason why I got it. So it could calculate when I go to the next level. It’s defective

**Developer response:** Thank you for leaving a review. I'm very sorry to hear you are having problems with the days tracking. It should track the minimum number of days for your age group at each level of Chart 1 ONLY (as described in the Canadian Air Force 5BX literature). Once the minimum number of days have been reached for a Chart 1 level, it will automatically advance to the next level if the "auto level advance" setting is enabled.

For charts 2 to 6 it will advance the level each day because the minimum days on these charts is 1. However, if "auto level advance" is turned off, it will increment the number of days exercised at each level until you manually advance the level.

I will look into this in case a bug exists in the level advance processing.

Thanks again.

UPDATE: Version 4.0 has just been released and contains an update to the progression rate.

Options are:
Manual - Does not auto advance the levels. Exercise every day at the chart level you set.
Auto Advance - Progress through Chart 1 levels for a number of days at each level according to age group and then 1 day for the higher chart levels. (As contained in the 5BX Plan literature)
Fixed Rate Advance - Exercise for the number of days according to age group for all chart levels.

Additionally, there are now optional audio prompts (voice or chimes) for all chart levels. You can choose prompts for exercise starts only or both exercises and reps. The prompt timing adjusts automatically - there's nothing to calculate or set.

### 1/5 — Basically useless

*2020-05-17*

No manual or tutorial is provided, and as a result the app serves only as a collection of images of the exercises. I wrote to the developer asking for more information and received no reply.

**Developer response:** Thank you Xenochronos for taking the time to write a review.

Tap the help icon at the top of the screen for a guided tour of the app. The 5BX App fully supports the 5BX Plan - 6 charts and 12 levels per chart. Tap the icon at top right of screen to set options (age group; 'flying crew' to increase max level for certain age groups; auto level advance; exercise 5 : stationary run, walk, or run; display miles or kilometers). Tap the Chart & level icon to change your current level.

I'm sorry but I did not receive anything from you requesting more info, but Version 2.0 has just been released and contains several user interface refinements.

### 1/5 — Review

*2020-05-11, version 1.1*

This app is a waste of money. It might get better in future but it is very incomplete and basic and not clear at all how to use it. Can I have my money back?

### 1/5 — Do not buy

*2020-04-15, version 1.0*

Useless app. Could be so much better but spent more time trying to figure it out than actually exercising. Not intuitive nor useful.

### 1/5 — Useless and meaningless

*2020-04-14, version 1.0*

This app is nonsensical. It takes UX design principles, sets them alight and throws them out the window.

### 2/5 — 3,99€ ???

*2024-03-20*

The explanations are more than frugal. The graphics are less than minimalistic (which is acceptable). But: the voice or sound settings change back to nothing whenever he app is opened. This is just badly programmed. And there is no sync between iPhone and iPad. Sorry, but 3,99€ are incredible for this.

### 2/5 — Good idea but needs improvement

*2020-04-15, version 1.0*

The app needs some usability improvements. It’s not clear how to use it.

### 3/5 — Not as user friendly as it could be, and I would start on chart 2 if you are in reasonable shape.

*2026-06-03, version 4.3.4*

I will continue to use it, but there are times where I would have like more information about what the buttons do. Example I stopped the running on the spot section because I hit the wrong button by mistake. Counting at the very lowest stages is confusing. Is it reps or is it sets. Once you move up. You learn it was reps. I moved up to chart 2. Things make much more sense, and chart 1 was to easy to hold my interest.

### 3/5 — One more feature would make this perfect

*2021-08-18*

I wanted a straightforward app to step me through the 5BX program every day. This does that. The one feature missing is simple audio prompts. If it had that it would be super useful.

WHAT I LIKE. I was looking for a simple 5BX app that remind me (visually) of each exercise, in sequence, for each stage of each chart. I wanted something that would help me do the routine, every day, and move me up the charts automatically. In other words, make it super simple to put in my age and, day by day, make it easy to put in the 11 minutes per day and slowly level up. No thinking. Just start the app and press go and 11 minutes later I’m done. This will do that. Almost. That’s where audio comes into play.

THE AUDIO FEATURE. I wanted an audio feature to prompt me when to do another rep of an exercise and when to switch exercises. Suppose I’m on Level C. I’m supposed to do exercise 1 for 7 reps over 2 minutes, then exercise 2 for 8 reps over 1 minute, and so forth. I don’t want to be constantly checking my phone, or watching a timer, or guessing if it’s time for another rep. The audio feature would tell me I’m starting the first exercise (maybe name the exercise), then beep 7 times over the next two minutes at regular intervals, then tell me when I’m done, tell me the next exercise and give me a few seconds to get ready. When I move to level C+ it would do the same but automatically adjust the timings.

I could use and app like Seconds Pro for this. And it work just fine. But every time I move to a new level I would need to manually adjust the timings for each exercise, or create a timing for each one. That’s a lot of work.

The app has the information I need. It has the right idea. But without audio I’m going to use Seconds Pro instead. With audio this would be perfect.

**Developer response:** Version 4.0 has just been released and contains optional audio prompts (voice or chimes) for all chart levels. You can choose prompts for exercise starts only or both exercises and reps. The prompt timing adjusts automatically - there's nothing to calculate or set.

### 5/5 — Great exercises

*2026-04-05*

Almost as good as the booklet, but electronic.

### 5/5 — A Great Classic Plan

*2025-09-01, version 4.3.4*

I have been doing this program most of my life since I was quite young because it has been around for decades and I am now over 60 years old and use this plan daily to keep fit it is perfect for people that don’t have a lot of time or money to invest in the gym membership or sports team. Doing this daily will keep your body strong and fit and then you can also do the walking or jogging in the evening or some other time as well if you like. I like doing this plan first thing in the morning. Doing this plan with participation in one or two other activities will keep you very fit and strong. I am a true believer that the consistency of 5BX is the key to what can keep a person healthy and fit. There is no excuse because everyone can put aside 11 minutes a day.

### 5/5 — Great app

*2025-02-20, version 4.3.4*

*Update* : New UI & Fix for voice prompts, this app is my new five-star app.

Loving this app, its use of streaks is great at motivating you to get to next level and stay at the level for you’re age. Good clear explanations, sound prompts & help screens to explain the exercises are all great and well thought out. I do exercises first thing after getting out of bed so it’s part of my morning routine. Good job Turtle Bay on producing a great app and fixing the reported voice prompt bug :)

### 5/5 — Great app but sound is intermittent

**Developer response:** Thank you for leaving a review. I have fixed the voice prompt bug and it should work reliably now. Please let me know if you are still having an issue with it. Thanks again!

### 5/5 — Great UI. Does what it is supposed to.

*2024-11-19, version 4.3.4*

Absolutely great app. Gets last star when it has added HealthKit.

### 5/5 — Great little app

*2024-01-12, version 4.2.1*

Easy, simple. Audio queues are really helpful. Thxs

### 5/5 — So glad to see this!

*2020-05-01*

A big thanks to the developer for putting this together! I used to do this as a kid back in the 70s and have done it off and on over the years. Nice to have an app again. And I like the choice of stationary run, mile walk, or 1/2 mile run for X5.

**Developer response:** Thank you dewdaw for the kind words! I'm glad you are enjoying 5BX.

### 4/5 — Good but

*2026-02-28, version 4.3.4*

The app is good but is could be better if you could skip to the next exercise in advance. You can skip straight to the run but I don’t see how to skip from exercise 1 to 2 before the time is up.

### 4/5 — Great app but sound is intermittent

*2024-02-25*

*Update* : A workaround for inaudible voice prompts, in the absence of a development update, is to toggle the Settings -> ‘Audible Prompts’ ->Voice button

You don’t even need to leave the button enabled for the voice prompts to work. The toggle seems to circumvent the bug preventing use of voice prompts while doing exercises.

Loving this app, it’s motivating to get to next level. Good clear explanations, sound prompts & help however the sound prompts don’t always work first time (volume is up and silent button on side of iP is not on). I can eventually get sound but I have to restart the app and fiddle about, hence 4 stars not 5. Overall I would & have recommended. I do exercises first thing after getting out of bed so it’s part of my morning routine. Good job Turtle Bay :)

**Developer response:** Thank you for leaving a review. I have fixed the voice prompt bug and it should work reliably now. Please let me know if you are still having an issue with it. Thanks again!

### 4/5 — Great little app

*2021-05-11, version 3.1*

I love the app, what would make it perfect is an Apple Watch companion app/integration. I use my watch for all my workouts, and it would be great to be able to do the outdoor run portion with just my watch, as I prefer to not bring my phone anymore.
