一般来讲，一种语言有几十万，甚至几百万的词汇。但是这些词汇在语言当中的功能、使用频率、重要性不同，其中，很少一部分词汇才是核心，也是学习的主要对象。然而，维吾尔语词汇学习的资料非常匮乏。维吾尔语词汇的分级工作还没有完成，学习者往往徘徊在海量的词汇当中，不知优先学习哪些词汇。

针对这一问题，我们对大规模真实语料进行统计分析，结合维吾尔语教学的实践和经验，初步确定了维吾尔语词汇的级别（常用程度）。研究结果表明，在维吾尔语中数量不到 1 万的词（约占《现代维吾尔语详解词典》中 5 万条词的五分之一）的覆盖率达到 99%，其中前 5 千个词的覆盖率达到 94%左右。也就是说，假如某个人掌握了最常用的 5 千词，就能看懂正常难度文本的 94%的词汇。

5K Words 中所收的 5 千词在维吾尔语常用词汇的基础上，围绕学习者需要进一步筛选出来的。我们还将这些词汇分为三级，其中一级（最常用词）是 1100 条，适合于初学者，二级词（次常用词）1700 条，用于达到中等水平，三级词（一般常用词）2200 条，用于进一步提高词汇量。此外，我们还对这些词标注了常用词性、读音（用国际音标转写），对应的汉文解释、动词的用法等信息，以便学习者更有效地掌握维吾尔语常用词汇的意义和用法。
