  • Not enough of Aus

It looks like a really solid tool for people who live in USA, Canada and NZ; but if you want to use it outside of those countries you’re stuck with the world map. Unfortunately there just is not enough landmarks and features on the world map to make it a reliable navigational aid. I’ll happily revisit this review if the developer can partner with an Australian map provider.

We have several new worldwide maps such as Accuterra now that cover all of Australia. Definitely need to check those out!
  • Topo Maps+

This app gives you all you need to enjoy your trails. It is very well designed, easy and intuitive you use. I’m using in all my trails, specially to track new routes (at least to me). The support is always there if you have questions.

  • Has never faulted after many, many walks

I use this app all the time. I can import trails from walking websites directly into it and then download my offline maps. We’ve never been let down by this app and it gives you great confidence and time management. It backs up data for me. The maps are clear band my position is easy to find and use. Sometimes, when the trail is not clear, we use this app for a few min to find the trail again. Highly recommend

  • Excellent customer service

I had a technical question about the Apple Watch app and Danny answered it brilliantly. Many thanks - nice to see such excellent customer focus.
  • As good as it gets!

One of those really rare apps where function, interface and support are all near-perfect. Even when I’m in Thailand the maps are more useful than Google or Apple for outdoor navigation. In the US, the detail includes hi-res satellite images and everything USGS offers.

You can plan a route to avoid whatever features you want to, see an elevation profile, and zoom in on satellite imagery close enough to see if roads and trails look like fun.

When you’re under way, you get a warning when you’re off track, an easy way to take a bearing on nearby topographic features, and a very detailed log. Add photos whenever. The Apple Watch app works like a charm, too: no need to have your phone with you.

Get home and export your track to Google Earth, e-mail it to your mother, whatever.

Yes, you have to pay — but none of the other gear you need is free, and very little of it is as good.

  • Could be a life saver

I’ve been using TopoMaps+ for several years and it has never failed to track within a few feet of the trail, and get me right back on track when I strayed. Notably in cloud-forest in Colombia, in thick cloud on top of Table Mountain, and recently a few times in the White Mountains NH where the trail just disappeared on me. Many thanks for this app, it has turned several potentially-seriously-dangerous scenarios into “no problem”. (Tips - I always use TopoMaps+ for route planning, and always download the route to my phone in advance). Thankyou!

  • Great app, even the free version

I like pretty much everything, however the update that added all of the new waypoints overwrote some of my old waypoints that I already had saved on my maps, if possible could the old waypoints be added back in a future update? The old upside down teardrop had higher contrast with a dark bottom and lighter top that was much easier to distinguish if you had a few waypoints close together. And when importing it’d be great to have the option to change all of the waypoint icons at once, I may have just not seen the option to do that if it’s already there but it would be great to organize waypoints by each import from a kml file. But anyway, for a free hiking map app I’ve not seen any better ones available, I spend a lot of time in the woods at work and in my free time so this app has been invaluable to me

Thanks for the kind words! Your waypoints shouldn't have changed with the update so please send us an email at support@glacierpeakstudios.com and we can help you out! Plus, the old waypoint styles are still there some can help with that too!
  • Used to be great

Theis app was by far the best Topo map app, now they require a monthly subscription for the app to be useful offline. Big disappointment as I have many routes and waypoint saved over the years.

    Developer Response

Hey there! Nothing has changed with regards to the free level and you still have access to all of your routes, waypoints, and free maps. Send us an email at support@glacierpeakstudios.com and we can help you get set up again!
  • Flexible Scale

The scale changes as you shrink or expand the map. Never found any digital map that would do this.

My second time rating this great app. To those who don’t like the old maps, they’re the ones to show you old mines, quarries, railroad right of ways, abandoned structures, monumented and unmonumented benchmarks, etc. The shading for forested land from an old USGS map also shows where the old growth was. Just looking at the differences is fun! Also, the most personal support from any app I’ve had since first ever IPad.

  • I don’t get it

Other than looking at where you are on a map, I don’t get what the point is. Maybe you have to upgrade to see features, but it isn’t obvious what you will get if you pay.

    Developer Response

You can plan and organize multi-day backcountry trips, compare maps, print backup maps and navigate in the wilderness just to mention a couple ideas. :-)
