  • Deserves 5 stars but will only give it a four.

Compared to HuntStand this map app is more user friendly on my iPhone 13 mini running iOS 16.
Now what I love about this app is that it:

    1. Shows the accurate property border lines.
    2. The maps are pretty clear when zooming in.
    3. The directional pointer is large and clear to see, making it easy to know which direction you are facing.
    4. Easy to access offline maps and modes.
    5. Using the folders for easy organization and sharing.

Now here are what I think should be improved compared to HuntStand:

    1. Monthly updates of property. I don’t know how HuntStand was able to do it but it was accurate when getting boots on the ground. Only downside is that there monthly updates of the property isn’t clear when zooming in.

    2. Adding the ability to share your maps with your friends and showing them to also make edits.

    3. Accuracy of location or slow updating to find my exact location. For some reason HuntStand does not have my location moving all over the place when using their maps they seem to have it pin pointed exactly where I am but when I use OnX location i see my location moving all over so it’s hard to get an exact location of where I am and where i place my pins for trail cameras and stands. Offline mode does work. But with full service and using both apps. Not sure why HuntStand would have a more accurate location service.

  • Great app, only missing one thing…

This app is really phenomenal. It is extremely useful when hunting backcountry, as well as in areas where public and private land are intermingled.

But where is the Apple Watch app? It’s kind of a glaring omission. Would be great to just glance at my watch and see the direction to a waypoint or identify surface ownership while moving. Would also be great to mark a location on the fly. In stead I have to take my phone out every time I want to use the app. I’m not saying that’s a huge issue, but the watch app seems like such an obvious and useful addition that I’m kind of shocked it’s not already out. Hopefully this gets added before my next hunt in January!

Looking forward to hopefully seeing this addition to an otherwise excellent app.

  • New Update/ Serious Issues

Use to be my favorite app on my phone. I do all of my e-scouting through this app and have never had an issue. Since the last couple of updates, the app has been nothing but glitchy. It freezes on me for minutes at a time, whether I’m in the woods or on my couch. Once it loads up (after freezing up, probably taking 3 minutes just to get the app usable) if I ever exit back to the Home Screen or I turn my phone off the whole process starts over. I can’t even do tracks anymore without glitching and just being one straight line from where the glitch started to when it started working again.

Like I said, I’ve always loved the app. But what good does it do for every hunting pin I have to no longer be usable? These issues need to be fixed ASAP!!! And I’ve never had these issues until the last two updates. But since then, I’ve all but voided the app because it leads to more frustration then use.

  • Great product, great people, that’s a company I can get behind.

OnX is simple to navigate and a great resource. I use the app primarily for fly fishing. I love being able to customize waypoints to differentiate where I have fished, and the new spots I’m scoping out. Downloading offline maps is another awesome feature. It brings ease in locating spots I’ve scoped out and maintaining awareness of public/private land to avoid accidental trespassing, regardless of whether or not there is cell service. I use a few apps with a similar purpose, however, none come close in comparison to the capabilities, clarity, and user friendly nature of OnX.

To top it off, I had the opportunity to meet multiple OnX employees while working at a local coffee shop in Bozeman. I was no longer working in coffee when I got into fly fishing, but when someone recommended I look into the app, I remembered the fun group that I used to serve espresso to daily. The people I met were so memorable, this tied with my new found love for the app, only furthered my support for this company.

A great product created by great people, that’s a company I can get behind.

  • Almost everything you could want in a hunting map app.

This app does everything you could possibly want it to. I run a predator hunting service so I use it daily. However, I do have 1 complaint. The maps need to be updated. I rely heavily on the map to not only show me the property boundaries, but also what’s beyond those boundaries. Where I’m shooting and what’s behind it is the most important thing. These maps are at least 3 years out of date. There have been a lot of homes, businesses, schools, etc. built in the last few years that don’t show up on the map. That’s going to be trouble for someone eventually. I always have to go onto google maps and pull up the satellite view before I hunt a property just to cover my tail. It’d be nice to be able to do it all from the same app.

  • Great for location, too many crashes while tracking

I really loved this app for both of the features in my title, but now only one works. When tracking, the app appears to close now when the iPhone screen is turned off. It may pick up the track by drawing a direct line from where it stopped tracking, to current location. Or the track will have been lost. Shucks. I really liked this app, I’m hoping the developers can figure out this issue. Perhaps it could be my iPhone, but since this is the only app with challenges, I’m guessing it’s not.
UPDATE: developer responded with tip on how to recalibrate iPhone compass, which led to discovery that the app only had access to location services when using it. Changing this permission to “always” should allow it to work more consistently when it’s running in the background. So I’m happy, thanks for the response!

  • Best App Ever!

I love this app and have used it extensively to scout hunting and off road trails in AZ. It is REALLY good. There are a couple things I’d like to see added/changed to make it even better. If you have used the ‘area shape’ tool to mark out an area, you cannot add a waypoint WITHIN that area because anywhere you click within the area brings up the info/edit dialogue for that area and doesn’t offer the opportunity to add a waypoint. Also, after creating off line maps, there is no indication on the map of WHICH offline map is in view? There is a green boundary around ALL of the offline maps but no ability to indicate WHICH map you’re looking at.

These are minor things that don’t really affect the overall usefulness of this app.

    Thanks for your consideration.

  • Only needs one thing to be perfect

Absolutely wonderful when compared to all other apps in its market segment, and although 3D maps are becoming a thing I’ve found them to be very slow and not so useful (topo tells the same story and doesn’t lag like most 3D maps do; I still just use Google Earth if I want a quick look). The only thing I notice between all apps is a less-than-accurate trails layer, and this is across all of them. But I know that’s asking a lot. MVUM and local hiking trails maps are still your best bet for accurate info there. The onX Hunt is the best all-around and most reliable app of all, meaning when you go offline you don’t suddenly have issues with the layers not being there or things of that nature. The only thing it could improve on is a layer that shows springs/creeks/rivers. Would help narrow down a place quickly. To date, there isn’t a one-stop-shop when it comes to e-scouting, but onX is by far the closest thing to it. I still use onC and goHUNT and Google Earth, but all my Waypoints are saved using onX & it’s the one I use when in the backcountry. This is a rapidly-evolving market segment however, so we’ll see what 2022 brings to the table.

Hello there! We really appreciate such in-depth review and feedback. These are the exact type of comments we turn towards when evaluating what features to pursue in the future, so we will absolutely take your words to heart. Thanks so much!
  • Ok

App is ok. Satellite imagining is just ok compared to other apps that do the same service. Every other app is a lot cheaper also. I have been an on x user since they released the app. In my opinion they pull some shady things when it comes to billing. Most apps remind you before they automatically bill you for the coming year. OnX doesn’t. They send you tons of marketing emails but nothing to remind you your billing is going to renew. On top of that, if you already have a subscription, don’t bother taking advantage of any sales or one of the discounts they offer on multiple social media/podcasts. If you’re current subscription is still active the new subscription will just replace the current one. So really you just lose months of already paid for service if you renew before your subscription is up. All of this was figured out by trial and error which is fine but customer service and or more transparency would be nice. From a long time user, who has relied on this app for a lot… there are a lot better apps out there now that offer the same or more for a lot better price.

  • Excellent technical support

Being that I am, from time to time, technologically challenged, it come to me as no surprise that I often cause myself trouble. A week or so ago, I noticed two separate charges to my credit card for OnX Hunt. After sending an email asking about the nature of this double charge, I promptly received an email clarifying that I was charged twice because I had created two accounts; one account subscribed to Elote services on a monthly basis, and another account subscribed to elite services on an annual basis. Acknowledging that the error was mine, I replied thanking the technician for helping me understand the cause of my problem, and asking them to please cancel the lesser used account, which was the annually renewed account. To my surprise and satisfaction, not only did the technical staff cancel the account, but they refunded my annual fee for the account I cancelled. Even though the error was my own doing, they refunded my money. Besides that, the app is great when outdoors, whether hunting, fishing, or just being in nature. I never leave home without it!
