“Generator lost connection to OnCue Server” is its most normal state

My Kohler generator is hardwired into the house router, and connectivity between generator and home WiFi has been professionally verified multiple times. The App is almost always down (only occasional periods of connectivity) with error response of “generator lost connection to OnCue server..” The connectivity problem is on the OnCue server side, nobody has any answers to solve the issue and there is no real support to try and fix issue. The Kohler assumption is that the customer WiFi / generator is always the problem, but as already noted the home WiFi / generator connection is good. Essentially there is no reliable app functionality that comes with Kohler generators.

On cue

App is easy to use and useful for monitoring operating time. Very disappointing that they removed the power monitoring feature.

Needs update. Not functional

Not a very intelligent app. I should be able to stop the generator when started automatically by a power outage, but I can’t. Should be able to start it manually after stopping it while a power outage, but I can’t. That should be a basic function. Please update and make it work.

Bad app

App keeps crashing every couple days disappointing

Lacking several key features

The good: The app will show you if you are running shore power or generator power. It will send you very basic notifications when the generator runs.

The bad: The app is very basic. The notifications are slow. You can’t really do anything with the app except do a test run. I would expect to be able to start and stop the generator, as well as see the amount of time it has been running. Also the notifications don’t tell you why the generator started, though it is fairly easy to discern whether it is during the scheduled run or not. Lastly when I had an error on the generator, the app did not notify me that there was a problem. This could have led me to find out when there was an outage and the generator didn’t start.

Overall the app is not great, and I was expecting more from Kohler.

Really love my system at my cottage working with the starlink internet

Intermittent WiFi Failure

The app works well when it is connected. I like having visibility to the exercise history, etc. The transmitter near my router worked at installation. However, there needs to be a signal strength feature because at least 5 times in the first month of use a lost communication message was received. I live remotely half of the year, so cannot “fix” issues easily. The reconnection was automatic so I receive “communication was restored” messages a few days later. I have since moved the indoor transceiver to what I hope is a better signal place. Again, without a signal strength function and visibility, seeing a successful setup is all or none even if it is just barely good enough. Please take note Kohler engineers. Maybe a future firmware update can fix this?

Generator

After one year, this is still not freaking working.

Good Vendor App - Missing functionality

The app is clear and easy to navigate. You can view more data about the generator than you may want, however the controls and configuration are extremely limited. You can start and stop the unit (loaded or unloaded) and you can schedule the weekly test. It will send notifications to your email address & text msg when it’s starts and when it stops. Integration to Ring and other major alarm system, HomeKit, Alexa…. would be extremely useful when you are away from home.

Basic Monitoring - But Does Not Allow Control When You Need It Most

One would think for all the expense of these generators, you would be able to control the unit remotely during a power outage, but you can’t. You can monitor it, but the ability to turn it on or off remotely during an outage is suppressed. So if u want to go to sleep at night, you have to go out to the unit to manually turn it off. And do the same in the morning to start it up. Not convenient if you’re on site, and very unneighborly if you’re away.

Kohler says the app was too easily hacked, which is why the don’t offer this capability. Really? They can’t figure out how to make the app secure? Generators costing 10% of these units offer remote control - at least with Bluetooth.

They can and should do better!
