  • Great app, and I owe the developer an apology

My original 2-star rating was based on a feature that I couldn’t find. I thought it has been removed, but the reality was that it was there all along and my dumb self just couldn’t find it. There are few worse feelings than blaming someone else for YOUR mistake, which is exactly what I’ve done here.

Fact is, this is a feature rich app with highly customizable settings (something the native Reddit app lacks). The guy is performing the Herculean task of providing a high quality app for one of the world’s most popular social media sites, pretty much by himself. I respect that work ethic and love using the app.

    Developer Response

It is exactly the same as its always been. You swipe to open the all menu and then select Delete Comment. I am just a guy trying to make a good Reddit app given the circumstances that I've found myself in.
  • The Best of a New Generation of Reddit Apps

Reddit’s decision a few months ago to make doing business as a third-party app developer for their platform more difficult definitely shook up the playing field; the loss of apps that we had all adopted and loved was a tough pill to swallow.

Narwhal 2 represents a lot of hard work and determination, bringing back the best of what we lost and maybe something more. Fast, responsive, and feature-rich with a ton of customization options, Narwhal 2 can be Reddit however you want to experience it. Recreate what you liked in a previous app or make it your own; it’s amazing what you can tweak in this app.

Well worth a subscription, Narwhal 2 is a worthy successor to any of the previous generation of Reddit apps that gave up the ghost.

  • These 1 star review people are CRAZY

This is one of the last standing third party Reddit apps and the 2.0 update is a night and day upgrade over the original Narwhal. The people trashing this and leaving 1 star reviews are crazy to me, makes me think they aren’t intelligent enough to open up the app settings and tweak it to exactly how you want it.

There is SO much customization when it comes to the UI, I honestly can’t even think of another app with this much. Coming from a long time user of Apollo, I was able to get Narwhal to look almost exactly the same and with the new swipe options, I got it feeling the same as well.

Do not listen to these 1 star reviews, download this app and check out the settings to see all you can do. Props to the developer, who, by the way is just 1 person doing all the work.

  • Loved the ride

Thanks for making reddit on mobile possible for years now. I like the new, fresh look, but am hopping off. I don't want to give reddit a dime, and believe the subscription model is rarely worth it compared to a buy license once and it's yours forever. However, I would gladly pay for a single purchase app for another site that replaces reddit in the future after spez runs this thing into the ground. I kind of don't want to spend as much time on reddit anymore anyway. Had a much better browsing experience than I would have using something aside from Narwhal, thanks again.

  • Great Reddit App as an Apollo Refugee

This app is super customizable so i don’t understand all the complaints that people have. And honestly the pricing isn’t bad considering how horrible the official reddit app is with ads. This app has no ads and is 10x better than the official app. I wouldn’t highly recommend putting in some “preset” settings to alleviate the people complaining. Like a Narwhal 1 preset and an Apollo preset so things feel more at home for the people that can’t be bothered to spend any time looking through the settings. Also i highly recommend changing the menu bar to be left so you can swipe forward and backward.

  • It's great, but I preferred the old layout

With the new Narwhal 2 update, the old layout I had been used to for years has gotten an update. Great in some ways, bad in others. I never liked accidentally opening my mailbox when I intended to open the app menu.

But anyways, what I am trying to say is that the old layout in terms of ease of use and navigation was so much better. I don't know why it's not a style option even now, but if you can keep the retro app icon, then surely you can keep the retro layout and font size. Thing is, while the customization is great, I feel like I would have to configure way too many things to simply try to get the same experience as Narwhal 1, even though this should be added as a single, configurable layout.

  • Removed features

Update on narwhal 2.0: you guys took away the hide read posts option! That’s was main reason I was using the app

Has all features the Reddit app doesn’t have and isn’t a nightmare to use like the reddit app. Only feature it is missing is the ability to swipe through posts. In this app you have to exit every post snd click on the next one. One annoying thing with this app too is that when you click on a post with a video or gif it doesn’t open the full video. So on every post you have to click the post, then click the video, then click off the video to get comments and finally click to exit the post. Overall it takes to much time to navigate posts.

  • A New Hope

Apollo refugee. Tried both Narwhal and the official Reddit app post-shutdown (Thanks Spez 🙃) and neither felt good. Bounced between both apps over the last few months, considered just side loading an older version of Apollo. Not sure how the API limits work with it though.

Jump to today, and I see Narwhal 2 is available. Within minutes I felt at home. Took a few adjustments in settings to setup a left-sided UI, custom colors, and a bottom bar layout of my own design. Will happily pay the monthly fee when it starts up to the dev(s). I was an Apollo Ultra user so I’m already comfortable paying for a premium experience. Hate that Reddit gets a portion for their insane API costs, but this is a significantly better alternative (in all aspects) than paying for Reddit Premium.

  • Better than expected, but poor video player

Narwhal is a good app for our post-API Reddit world. Thank you for your work. A huge miss is the video player. It has decent scrubbing from the timeline, but after a few seeks it will always completely disable the app control, forcing the user to finish watching the video or swipe the app away. Would love to see: 1. Full screen video scrubbing 2. App control does not freeze after multiple video seeks 3. Ability to save video 4. When viewing comments, option to show full media instead of top half by default (height-priority instead of width) 5. For dark mode, option to change color of blue text for links, especially the subreddit

  • I avoid videos because everything freezes

I don’t typically write reviews for apps. But, I am incredibly frustrated. I have an iPhone 12 Pro Max on a later version of iOS 14 (non-jailbroken, thank you very much). But, there’ve been many times I get stuck watching a video because the app bugs out with anything longer than 30 seconds. I can’t use any swipe actions or go back to the main page; nothing works once a video is playing, and I have to remove it from the background. I don’t know if it’s something with how the app processes or displays videos, but I just get stuck. There have been numerous occasions where I’ve had to completely exit the app and remove it from the background, only to continue hearing the audio from the video for another 15-20 seconds. I only downloaded this app because it was an alternative to Apollo that wasn’t Reddit’s official app (which is garbage). I’m glad to have been around for the golden era, and disappointed to see reddit fall to total corporate greed and poor leadership.
