  • Requires payment now

Was a great app. Now you have to pay for anything more than a few hours of a forecast

    Developer Response

Apologies for the confusion. The last couple of weeks Alpenglow has been very close to hitting daily limits for the forecast data which required limiting the forecasts temporarily in order to not run out of requests. This is now resolved and the limit has been increased after a few months of waiting.
  • Disappointing

The free version literally only gives you the outlook for “possibly” the next day … mine isn’t even showing that. Just the previous sunset - nothing for the following morning. Don’t download unless you want to pay

    Developer Response

Sorry for the temporary limitation here. This has now been resolved and the previous behavior is back in place. The app has been gaining popularity and due to having a daily limit in requests it was necessary to put a limitation in place while I was struggling to get a limit increase from the forecast provider. This is now resolved and the next day forecasts are available again.
  • Freebie version is very limited

I used to be able to see tomorrow’s forecast and now I can’t because it’s locked for pro which means the free app is pretty useless - the only way to get a sunrise forecast is to either stay up until after midnight or wake up super early before sunrise on the day to get a sunrise forecast.

Sorry for the issues here! This was required temporarily in order to manage an increase in usage, while keeping the app within the daily limits of the forecast provider. I had requested an increase for the limit a few months ago which went unanswered but finally got in touch successfully this week and everything should be back to normal now with the new increased limit.
  • Initially good

Was very good, but now only shows today and not tomorrow.

    Disappointing

Sorry for the limitation here. Alpenglow's forecast provider limits the number of requests we can use per day. I've been waiting for them to respond to an increase request which was granted this week so the limitation is no longer in place.
  • Meh. Consistently inconsistent.

Updated: now that the free version only shows a ONE day outlook, this app is useless as I can get all the other info for free elsewhere. A real shame, so much potential here.

I’ve been using the free version for a year or two and agree with many others. When it works/is accurate, it’s great. But it’s so inconsistent, that it’s unreliable and doesn’t encourage me to want to actually pay for the pro version. There’s no explanation of what the metrics are for determining poor/fair/great predictions, which is strange. I try to submit field reports when I can, but not sure they’re having any effect. Wish it was better and more accurate and reliable as I like it otherwise.

Sorry for the flaky experience recently. Due to an increase in usage it was necessary to temporarily limit the number of forecasts showing in order to keep the number of requests under the daily limit I have with the provider SunsetWX. I've been waiting for a response from them since May to increase the limit which was granted earlier this week so the limitation is no longer in place. Field Reports will be utilized in the next few months and will help form some of the new features coming in v9.0. Completely agree the app should include more information about the metrics, for now these are available on the SunsetWX website but will be part of a new FAQ that'll be available in v9.0.
  • Inaccurate and now pretty useless

Have been using the free version for a while. Half the time it’s incorrect and you’re better off using other proper weather apps to make an accurate prediction yourself. The free version also now seems to be limited to same day. So unless you set your alarm for midnight (and you’ve probably gone to bed early if you want to catch a sunrise in the height of summer) if you want to catch a sunrise it’s now pretty useless for sunrises.

Apologies for the limitation that only showed the current days forecasts. This was necessary to keep the app under a daily limit that I have with the forecast provider. I've been reaching out to get this limit raised for some time but only this week after the app had gone over that limit I finally heard back. The limit has now been increased and the limitation for free users has been removed. Forecast accuracy is a project that I'm actively working on and hope to have something out in the next few months that'll improve accuracy and will utilize field reports to improve the accuracy over time. The app will also utilize current conditions around you from local weather stations to override forecasts based on weather forecast models. So if a model says it's going to be perfect based on cloud cover but a weather station is reporting that it's completely overcast then the app will correct the score.
  • Best app out there

I’ve used this app for a few years now and hands down it’s the best out there if it’s kind!

    Thanks so much Emma!
  • Great App

Somewhat accurate though sometimes a little inaccurate. Very well designed, you can search for lots of places that other apps doesn’t always provide. I recommend getting Alpenglow Plus because it’s worth the extra days of forecast for just a tip.
  • Does not work

Checked a few times during the day for the same day and it said very poor sunset, in reality there was an amazing sunset out there
  • Doesn’t help at all

Firt time I’ve ever one star reviewed an app. Thought this would be beneficial for recreational/hobbyist photography. Figured I’d at least have a general idea what days might be worth getting into position for a sunset around my home. I know forecasting sunrise/sunsets quality is tricky business and can’t be 100% accurate days out, but I have yet to have one good sunset correlate with a forecast. The forecast 3-5 days out will predict an 80%+ great sunset, a lot of times it will still be forecasting that a day or two before, then without fail it will downgrade the forecast to poor or fair within 12-36 hours of the actual sunrise/sunset. And what is worse is the best sunrises and sunsets we’ve had this winter were not hinted at by the app at all. It’s a useless product that does a terrible job of the one thing it’s supposed to do. Unsure why it has so many positive reviews.

Sorry to hear. It's likely that the forecasts provided by SunsetWX are transitioning from one model to another which may be causing the huge variation a few days out. Likely from the GFS model to the NAM model. I'm currently working on some solutions to improving forecasts within Alpenglow, including using real time conditions to override forecasts that look to be inaccurate vs reality. Sorry you've not had any luck with the app but hope you'll give it another chance once I've got these improvements in place in the future.
