### 5/5 — Really good iPhone Puzzler!

*2021-12-29, version 1.1.2*

Great, original idea, well executed! Challenging at times (like all good puzzles) but rewarding to solve each island-hop with only subtle clues. Story, sound and graphics are simple but they work! Maybe the best Arcade game I’ve played!

### 5/5 — LOVE

### 5/5 — A calming puzzle that you'll play for hours

*2021-10-22, version 1.1.2*

This game never seems to end in the best way. It's so good to play it and put it down and come back to it whenever. It's not demanding of you but you don't lose interest. It's a quality game and I couldn't give it more praise.

### 4/5 — Almost perfect

*2021-09-29, version 1.1.2*

Love this game but coming back after a hiatus I see there is still no fix for the map resolution on the iPad. I can’t see logs or rocks from the map view and it is near impossible to complete the more complex puzzles.

### 5/5 — Relaxing puzzler

*2021-09-14, version 1.1.2*

Cute puzzle game that’s quite relaxing. I like the playful graphics and artifacts the character comes across. Reading the museum-like descriptions make me laugh. Unfortunately, I always seem to find these types of puzzle games hard. So I wish there was a hint system, four when I get stuck.

### 5/5 — Terrific puzzler!

*2021-08-06, version 1.1.0*

If you enjoy spatial puzzling like sliding brick games, you’ll adore this one! I like that it doesn’t have too many absurdly easy levels in the beginning. Most puzzle games are made up of stupidly easy and insanely hard levels. What I want are lots of intermediate levels - those that give you a challenge, but are doable given careful thought. Monster’s Expedition seems to have a bunch of intermediate levels like this, which I love! Also… cute graphics and funny object descriptions. Fortunately I’ve not had save game issues that some players have had. 5* game for me!

### 5/5 — Really cute

*2021-06-11, version 1.0.4*

It’s a really cute fun game and the puzzles make you think. Some are actually a bit harder to solve than you think they will be. I really enjoy playing this game.

### 5/5 — Relaxing puzzle game with depth

*2021-06-10, version 1.0.4*

The creators of this game have truly mastered the art form of creating a casual puzzle-explorer work of art that is as addicting as it is beautiful. True to the genre, the puzzles start out easy and get more complex as you play, exploring the realm island by island. The satirical “human museum” provides just the right amount of entertainment reward for progressing, and there’s more than just a little satisfaction at figuring out a tough island.

About the time you think the game has exhausted itself, you realize you haven’t nearly finished exploring all the map. Returning to previously “easy” puzzles, you find some islands where the advanced moves you learned after you had already passed open up new paths.

To explore the entire map, you have to combine several different islands into bigger and bigger puzzles. The depth and complexity of some of the more frustrating puzzles are masterpieces in design. At the end, it’s difficult to put the game down, but you walk away with the feeling that you’ve actually accomplished something, which is lacking in most app store games these days. It’s well worth the tens of hours it takes to wander through this surprisingly engaging world.

### 5/5 — Best puzzle game I’ve played in years

*2021-05-26, version 1.0.4*

Found it from the nomination list for the Independent Game Developers awards. This game was nominated for best game design, among other nominations. It’s my favorite game on Apple Arcade and one of my favorite puzzle games in the past several years.

### 5/5 — Fun and challenging!

*2021-05-23, version 1.0.4*

This is an awesome fun little app. It is not that short and an awesome way to pass some time. A lot of the puzzles were challenging and took a minute to figure out!!!

I would definitely play this game again!

### 5/5 — I love this game

*2021-04-27, version 1.0.4*

This game is so fun sometimes I play all day you should totally try it out it is the best game I’ve ever played you will love it it is the best game in the world off I just love it

### 5/5 — Instantly addictive!

*2021-04-08, version 1.0.4*

If you enjoy puzzle games with a character and some silly humor you’ll love it! I’ve put over 10 hours into the game in the first week and there’s still so much left unexplored. The best part about this open world puzzle is that when I get stuck or frustrated I can just hop over to another island and try another puzzle. It’s so cute and the music is really calming.

### 5/5 — Fantastic open world puzzler

*2021-01-25, version 1.0.3*

The open world concept is great, it lets you continue to make progress in other areas while you let puzzles you might be stuck on “marinate” in your brain for a while.

Groups of islands (archipelagos?) each have their own visual theme and usually introduce a new mechanic to the puzzle solving. Sometimes when I return to a different “archipelago” I need to re-solve an island or two to remind myself of what the trick to that bunch of puzzles tends to be.

The one downside, if you consider it to be one, of the open world system is that because each puzzle doesn’t have a clearly defined level number, it can be trickier to find hints online for those times that you are truly stuck. I’m glad it’s not trivially easy to get pointers, but after completing most of the game, I need something to point me to the right places where I could make progress- I believe most of what remains for me are interactions between multiple islands, and working out which ones I need to focus on seems to be more effort than my brain is up for.

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — Game rarely saves progress

*2021-01-22, version 1.0.3*

I deleted this app because out of the 24 hours I spent on it, only 11 have saved. It is fun the first time but extremely frustrating to have to redo your work more than half the time. You are better off investing time on any other app - it is not worth the frustration.

I spend 20-40 minutes a day and over half the time my progress is not saved.

Even though many many others reported this problem here in reviews, developers keep blaming iCloud. I have over a TB free so it is not iCloud.

I have tried many methods to force the game to save including loading back a bit before exiting; this method doesn't help. I have tried other methods such as modifying settings or going through mailboxes just before exiting and nothing forces the game to save. There is no known method to force this game to work. I have also tried to play on several devices, my main is my iPhone 12 Pro - all devices have the saving issue, the iPhone 12 pro seems to save least of all (this is the newest phone you can buy right now).

Don't waste your time on this worthless app that the developers won't even consider has saving issues.

**Developer response:** Hey, sorry it took so long to get an update out, but if you download the game again now hopefully this problem will be fixed. Let us know if not at hello@monsterexpedition.com

### 2/5 — Gets a bit frustrating

*2021-09-14, version 1.1.2*

In the beginning it’s really fun, obviously it gets more complicated but when you’re stuck it doesn’t give you the option for hints so when you’re stuck you’re really stuck on an island and can’t continue. At which point it’s just frustrating, and you might as well chuck the game. Too bad…

### 2/5 — Great Idea, Absolutely Horrible Execution.

*2021-05-29, version 1.0.4*

So I’m just gonna get right to the point here. The game is boring as heck. You tap, read, swipe and repeat. No excitements. It was a great idea, a relaxing open world game.

But seriously? You don’t walk, you tap. Wanna go to that cool lookin exhibit right there? Tap it. Then read a paragraph about some useless crap, then move along.

I thought it would a nice cozy game without stress, but in reality, it was an unfinished horrible playing garbage controlling horrendous excuse for a game, with no goal other than to tap swipe read and R E P E A T! ! !

Developers, if I were to recommend somethin’ , just change the controls, and make it more interesting.

### 2/5 — Wish there was more to it

*2020-09-10, version 1.0.2*

It’s pretty much just knocking over logs and moving them until you can cross to a new island to knock over more logs. I kept thinking that after a few islands I would get to a story or something more. I also wish there was a tutorial or even hints, I’ve been playing for a while now and there are still some aspects I’m confused about. It could be really fun if it wasn’t so repetitive and there was more to it. Not my cup of tea, but could be someone else’s.

### 3/5 — Great game, but sync is problematic

*2022-12-26, version 1.2.1*

Overall this game is lots of fun. The puzzles are great, the sense of exploration is quite nice. In fact I'm struggling to think of a puzzle exploration game I enjoyed more.

But if you play on multiple devices you will likely have trouble syncing data reliably — I had my Mac replace the cloud data with its outdated data. Thankfully I still had the local data on my iPhone, otherwise I would have lost quite a bit of progress

I'd be wary until they can get cloud save and sync polished. Or at least only play on a single device.

### 3/5 — Good 5-minute Game, But…

*2022-05-25, version 1.2.0*

This is a good game if you’ve got 5 minutes, because it’s simple, but can be annoyingly hard at times. Sometimes, it’s confusing which direction you’re supposed to go in, and there’s no way to tell how close you are, because at one point, you get SO CLOSE to the finish, but there’s rocks blocking your way, so you have to find another way. And there’s nothing to it besides from rolling logs, so it get’s boring after a while. So if you have 5 minutes to play something, then I suggest downloading it.

### 3/5 — Amazing game but does not save.

*2021-07-08, version 1.0.4*

This is an amazing game that works your brain to try figuring out the levels. I have played numerous times. But what is truly frustrating is that it will not save my last played position and it has kicked me out numerous times. (I’ve seen previous replies. And yes I have PLENTY of storage left on the cloud). Sadly because of this and it shutting down I cannot finish the game. I can see where I last played and how may islands I have completed but when I go to start where I left off. The app shuts down.

### 3/5 — A MIXED REVIEW

*2020-12-01, version 1.0.3*

I found the game both enjoyabable and frustrating--in other words, a mixed experiece.

PROS
1. There is a gentle whimsiness about the game that's endearing.
2. The game loaded properly about 98% of the time.
3. There is no timer, so you can pro2. Because of this, there really shceed at a leisurely pace.
4. There is no violence, other than the wanton deforestation of hundreds of trees.

CONS
1. Many of the puzzles are simply way too hard and border on the unsolvable. For a number of them, you almost need the mind of a master chess player who can think eight moves ahead. That's not most of us.
2. There should be a hint feature.
3. The fact you can survey the overall map and jump to places you've been while in the mailboxes should be explained. I did not discover this until well into the game.
4. The short descriptions that accompany the museum pieces seem to be an attempt at cleverness or humor but really don't do either.
5. There is barely a story here and the ending offers no conclusion other than the "monster" is sailing home. What did he rescue? What did her learn?

With a few adjustments, the game would be far more satisfying, although it's still worth trying out for as long as a particular player's patience will endure.

### 3/5 — Fix the backups please

*2020-09-17, version 1.0.2*

I love this game and it’s overall aesthetic however I keep having an issue. Every time I leave the game and return it puts me back at the same island near the beginning. Just played for an hour, saw the correct backup in the list of all backups, closed the game, and still all of my progress was lost. There is no point in continuing until this is fixed because I don’t have enough time to play it all in one sitting. I really love this game please fix this!!

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — One of the two best Sokoban games

*2023-05-12*

The other is Stephen’s Sausage Roll. These two games are not only the best Sobokan games, but also the best puzzle games, ever. They build on a simple rule, and dive deep. The gameplay itself offers diverse scenarios and puzzles. Some puzzles make you wonder how on earth can someone come up the designs like that! Really enjoyed it. It’s amazing Sobokan games can have such a deep potential. Eagerly waiting Jonathan Blow’s new game to become another best Sobokan game! Puzzle game lovers cannot miss this game, it is a must play.

### 5/5 — Such a relaxing game!!

*2023-03-03, version 1.2.1*

I absolutely love this game! It’s fun for kids and adults. Not only is it fun you also get to use your brain! I love it. You should definitely try this game.

### 5/5 — Relaxing

*2022-12-19, version 1.2.1*

The music is relaxing. The puzzles get challenging. Cute concept. Hints do not give you the how to get the answer, just where the log should go.

### 5/5 — Very good puzzle game

*2022-12-12, version 1.2.1*

Took me weeks to get through it all, but sometimes that's a good thing for puzzle games. They got a LOT of mileage out of just pushing logs.

### 5/5 — Excellent game

*2022-10-29, version 1.2.1*

This is one of the best puzzle games I’ve seen. Don’t know if I’ll ever get to the end of the game but it’s sure fun trying. Wish the developer would create an extra cheat paid service that would help you.

### 5/5 — One of my favorite Arcade games

*2022-06-17, version 1.2.1*

This has to be one of my favorite Apple Arcade games. It can be really challenging at times, but clearing a really hard island is so satisfying. Alongside the puzzles, there are also interesting and honestly pretty funny museum exhibits. Definitely worth the challenge. The different mechanics that you discover are pretty cool, and the addition of (optional) hints in the newer update is a good idea. As of writing this I am almost completely done with the game, I just have one snowman left. Highly recommend if you like puzzle games and map exploration/completion.

### 5/5 — Great puzzle

*2022-04-13, version 1.1.2*

It really stretched my brain and helped me get a different point of view of some things great game overall and I really recommend

### 5/5 — Addicting puzzles

*2022-03-07, version 1.1.2*

Great game ! Not too difficult not too easy. Some of the puzzles took me a very long time to solve, but I was finally able to complete the game. I wish there was an update or part 2.

### 5/5 — Just frustrating enough to make you keep playing.

*2022-01-05, version 1.1.2*

Really good game. Huge map. Could benefit from a few hints on some puzzles…

### 5/5 — One of the best puzzle games I’ve ever played.

*2021-12-29, version 1.1.2*

I played on switch and got it on my phone to play on the go. It’s nigh perfect level design-wise and the British humor is great.

It’s hard not to like this game. Download it. Do yourself a favor.
