### 1/5 — Joke of an app

*2025-10-16, version 13.0.7*

I would disconnect the 800 number too considering how lousy of an app this is. Every once in a while for kicks I try to register my new hot water heater and it consistently fails every time. If you’re buying a hot water heater based on its ability to be monitored online.. skip AO Smith.

### 1/5 — Unfortunate “app”

*2025-10-16*

I am so glad that we test apps prior to buying products (ones that will let us test them at least) because we have found some awful apps out there. This is not an exception. In fact, it reminded us of WHY we test the apps first. The app is featureless, not “streamlined” and outdated- if you think 1996 AOL chat room you’ll be getting close.

With testing the app we had to do some digging and learned that there is no alert for water leaks, only alert “logging,” so you have to open and look at the app to see if there has been a leak. This is not helpful. I would like to know if 50gal+ of water just dumped all over my basement before the water shut-off stopped incoming flow. This makes a third-party leak detector necessary.

Additionally, we keep getting an error saying their network is experiencing issues and that it’s in their end- at least they’re honest about that part.

Rheem is our choice after comparing functionality, because, well, their app… functions.

### 1/5 — Not Reliable

*2025-10-16, version 13.0.7*

Installed water heater with an AO Smith app that is worthless. I have re-entered the system settings multiple times bc it fails to connect to the heater. This is a vacation property that doesn’t need hot water every day. That said it is a worthless app.

### 1/5 — Has never worked

*2025-10-13, version 13.0.7*

Don’t know how they can sell water heaters that are supposed to be blue tooth enabled when the app never works. Should not have spent the extra money. 🙄

### 1/5 — Forgets Heater

*2025-10-12, version 13.0.7*

App layout is decent but constantly forgets the heater. Have to add it back multiple times. I like the features but really dislike the issues with losing the heater and speed of changing modes.

### 1/5 — Water Heater

*2025-10-06, version 13.0.7*

Every time the app updates… I have to start all over again from re-register new account information… This the worst app ever.

### 1/5 — It doesn’t work at all

*2025-10-04, version 13.0.7*

Constantly logs me out “session expired” when i try to set up a heater (any where from 10 seconds to a minute) Chooses the long distance camera on my phone so i can’t scan the QR code. It’s either too far away or blurry. The times I’ve managed to stay logged in long enough to add the heater, it will randomly drop all my configuration info after a few weeks and I have to try all over again. Don’t even try. This app is a waste of time.

### 1/5 — Keeps loosing heater info

*2025-10-04, version 13.0.7*

Quite a few times when I I went into the app, my hot water heater is disconnected and I have to go through the whole process of adding it and reconnecting using the QR code again. Happened a handful of times over the last year.

### 1/5 — Not ready for prime time

*2025-10-02, version 13.0.7*

Recently went into vacation mode when my air Bnb guests tried to shower. Has gone offline requiring me to re-enter all data. Way too buggy. If you use this app save time by keeping the serial number somewhere handy- you’ll need it when it goes offline and forgets everything.

### 1/5 — Incompetent

*2025-10-01, version 13.0.7*

There are too many problems with this app to even list, but perhaps the biggest is that it every so often, it randomly resets and you have to re-add every A.O. Smith water heater you have. Good luck calling their customer service team for help. Between the app, the highly failure prone water heater itself, and incompetent customer service, I’ll never ever buy an A.O. Smith product again.

### 1/5 — Clunky and annoying to use when it’s working

*2025-10-01, version 13.0.7*

I never used it for a ton. Just monitoring the energy usage. The big problem comes when out of nowhere it just forgets my water heater and I need to add my heater again like it’s never been there. It’s crazy. What’s the point of having a control app that will suddenly forget the thing it controls. This is clearly not a priority for AO Smith and they should probably stop advertising about the app but they aren’t going to. It’ll just be bad.

### 2/5 — Initial creation is rough

*2025-09-28, version 13.0.7*

App errored out on water heater registration and couldn’t get it to work until I manually connected water heater to wifi. After that was good to go.

### 1/5 — Please just make it stable

*2025-09-27, version 13.0.7*

It logs you out and then forgets the device. The water heater and app combo have so much potential. The app doesn’t have to be flashy. Just make it work and keep it stable.

### 1/5 — Unusable

*2025-09-24, version 13.0.7*

Come on! WiFi setup should be simple. Instead the app initially told me it was unable to register my water heater. Now it tells me that it’s registered already and in my devices yet it’s not. I can not add or remove it or really accomplish anything now.

Update: Now my login is not working either. Complete and total trash.

Still no resolution. Why pay more for a WiFi capable device when the app doesn’t work and there is no way to connect.

### 1/5 — Unreliable trash

*2025-09-23, version 13.0.7*

I can live with an app that (even randomly) logs me out “because security”. But this app also decides to forget your water heater, requiring you to re-enter its information, including serial number, also randomly for no apparent reason! This is definitely what you want to happen when you’re not standing in front of the QR code it wants you to scan to add it.

Luckily the device itself (a hybrid water heater) doesn’t seem to care if your app works or not - but it has its own problems.

### 1/5 — Forgets device

*2025-09-22, version 13.0.7*

Every time the app logs the user out, it forgets the device so when you sign back in you have to rescan the QR code ON THE DEVICE!

I don’t know about you, but it is not super easy to access my device, so the this app is pretty much taking up space on my phone… glad the blue tooth model was $100 more…

### 1/5 — Worst App Ever!

*2025-09-18, version 13.0.7*

I’m a landlord and have several remote properties where I need to adjust water heater settings to save energy when the property not in use. This app keeps logging you out and when logging back in, it completely erases your water heater set up. Thinking maybe a glitch but NO it happens EVERY few months and you need to scan the QR code on the actual water heater to add it back. Considering I’m 300+ miles away this is not an option! Horrible app. AO smith spend some$$ to put together your back end it’s not that hard!

### 1/5 — Horrible app

*2025-09-17, version 13.0.7*

This app just kicked me out after having the most horrible experience to add the water heater.. If I would have known this I wouldn’t have ever bought this water heater.

### 1/5 — It’s basically false advertising at this point

*2025-09-16*

iPhone 15 pro with up-to-date software. Downloaded the app and created account. Successfully verified email. Tried to register serial number for heater and met with “unexpected error”. Tried again and it now says the heater has already been registered but it doesn’t show up on my dashboard. Great. Closed the app and tried to sign in, now met with “unexpected error” again and can’t even log back into the app. The iCOMM app does the same exact thing and you can’t even get logged in. I have never seen a set of apps perform so badly from a base fundamental level. What’s even the point? Advertising app connectivity and “sMaRt FuNcTiOnS”is just straight up false advertising because it’s completely unusable with this system. Seems like the apps were built just to harvest email and phone numbers to sell…

### 1/5 — Terrible App

*2025-09-04, version 13.0.7*

QR Code reader doesn’t work and manually entering the serial number doesn’t work either.

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — New App No Better than Previous IComm

*2026-01-13, version 13.0.8*

Keep having to re-enter water heater purchased in 2022.

### 1/5 — Junk. waste time

*2025-12-25, version 13.0.8*

Forgets your hot water heater every time and you need the serial number, model number etc to reset the app. Waste of your time.

Now i just turn the breaker off when i go on vacation.

### 1/5 — Does not work, dead on arrival

*2025-12-07, version 13.0.8*

Does not work, dead on arrival. Fix this problem or remove wrong advertising from your product!!!

### 1/5 — Your app is trash

*2025-12-02*

I downloaded this app and the ICOMM app because the A.O. Smith one has a sunset date. I registered my water heater and it does not show up in my dashboard which is nonexistent. I tried to add it again and it says it is already registered, but again still cannot see a dashboard. A.O. Smith usually makes a good hot water heater… their app on the other hand is trash. Spend the extra money and hire a decent app developer and programmer to keep your customers happy. Next water heater will be a Rheem since that’s what my dad had installed and their app actually works and works well.

### 1/5 — Garbage, literally does not work at all. Spending extra for the wifi was a ripoff.

*2025-11-27, version 13.0.8*

Garbage, literally does not work at all. Spending extra for the wifi was a ripoff.

### 1/5 — Garbage

*2025-11-01, version 13.0.8*

The app deletes all your saved devices every so often so you have to redo the whole process. Seriously embarrassing app.

### 1/5 — A real pain

*2025-10-31, version 13.0.8*

EVERY TIME we go on vacation and want to put the hot water heater on vacation mode we have to sign in and add our hot water heater like it was never registered. That means going down in the basement, standing on my head to scan the bar code or add the serial number and adding the date it was purchased (who remembers that). It’s easier just to leave it like it is which defeats the purpose.

### 1/5 — Trash

*2025-10-25, version 13.0.8*

App constantly loses your session, then forgets any devices you have registered.

### 1/5 — pathetic

*2025-10-24, version 13.0.8*

forgets hot water heater regularly for no apparent reason

### 1/5 — Wont connect

*2025-10-18*

What a waste of time! I registered the water heater with aosmith. When i try to input the serial number of the water heater into either the icomm app or the aosmith app, both of them say “unknown heater” well my receipt and the product registration says its known. This is shameful and the coders need to be fired and kicked out of the industry. I am probably lucky considering how bad all reviews are. How can you achieve 1 star (thats the minimum) reviews and be proud of your product? Are you even a serious business? You would have done better work if you just didnt bother.

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — Not for Softeners

*2022-01-12, version 6.0.1*

DON’T DO IT. This app is for water heaters only, NOT for home softeners. If you want it because you bought a new softener, don’t bother.

### 5/5 — Victory

*2013-06-17, version 1.0.0*

This is awesome!!!!! Works ever time when I get the right numbers in it! LOL wish others would follow this and do one for their heating equipment.

### 5/5 — Thumbs up

### 4/5 — App is better than expected

*2024-07-26*

After reading all the negative articles I reviews, I was hesitant to give it a try. But I decided to install it since it seems to be the only way to get our water heater to turn on and off automatically based on our TOU (time of use) electricity rates. That aspect of the app works just fine. Since I don’t need any other of the app’s features, I’m quite happy with it overall. It was a bit tricky to install, because there are a few spurious error messages, mostly I just ignored them, and it still worked ok. So if you are on a TOU plan, give it a try. Pay close attention to each screen during the installation and registration of the app, and I think it will work.

### 4/5 — Works but cannot add a time use rate plan manually

*2023-03-02*

My electric company’s time use rate plan was not able to be found automatically. I when I tried to enter the rate plan manually, there is a bug that prevents me from entering the cost per KWH entering any number in the cost field automatically adds a dollar sign in decimal point leaving the digits to the left of the decimal point always at zero. Only the digits to the right of the decimal point can be edited.

**Developer response:** We apologize for the inconvenience you've experienced with the cost per KWH field. Please consider updating to the latest app version for potential improvements and bug fixes such as the one you have identified. If you have further concerns or need assistance, please contact our customer support at +800-527-1953. Thank you for taking the time to share your positive experience with our app.

### 4/5 — So far so good (day 2)

*2023-02-09*

I downloaded this app and iCOMM as our new HPWH is Wi-Fi enabled. ICOMM could not connect but this app did on first try. Not showing energy usage yet but we’ve only had it running for about 16 hours. Will update if it crashes or otherwise loses functionality.

**Developer response:** Thank you for sharing your positive experience with our app. We're delighted to hear that it successfully connected to your new Wi-Fi-enabled HPWH. If you ever encounter any issues or have further questions, don't hesitate to reach out to our support team for assistance. We truly value your feedback, and we recommend updating to the newest version of the app for additional improvements and bug fixes.

### 3/5 — After Initial Hitch, Working Fine

*2025-07-11, version 13.0.7*

I was stuck adding my unit to the app. The app kept telling me I had already added the water heater when I scanned the QR code for the unit. I called support and they sent me an email with simple instructions for connecting my unit to wifi and the unit showed up right away in the app. Everything working great now. I was even able to look up my local utility rate plan to optimize when my water heater heats up! Great features. Working great now. I recommend that the app add the instructions on how to manually connect the water heater to wifi.

So giving a 3 for making me call customer support but good now!

Here’s the instructions in case you need them too!:

If following the standard iComm/A. O. Smith App setup process isn't working to connect the water heater to the Wi-Fi network; use the following steps to set it up manually:

Make sure the power is on to the water heater.

Make sure the Wi-Fi signal from the wireless router is 2.4 GHz.
The unit is not able to connect to a 5 GHz connection.

Go to your Wi-Fi/network settings on your smartphone and turn off "Auto Join."
We will turn this back on once we have finished the process.

Disconnect your phone from any Wi-Fi connections.

Press the "Enter" button on the controller interface.

Press the "Wi-Fi" button on the controller interface.
The light for the Wi-Fi should start flashing.

Once the light for the Wi-Fi starts flashing on the controller interface, go to Wi-Fi connections on your smart phone and connect to the "iComm- AC****" connection.

Once connected to the "iComm-AC****" connection, a web page should open to show a list of nearby Wi-Fi connections.
If a web page doesn't open automatically, open a web page on your mobile device and type in "192.168.0.1" in the address bar.

Connect the unit to the preferred Wi-Fi connection.
Make sure the Wi-Fi connection is a 2.4 GHz connection.

Once the Water Heater is connected to your preferred Wi-Fi, it will show a "Connection Successful" message.
If the unit doesn't connect to the preferred Wi-Fi connection, double-check the connection type (2.4 GHz and Wi-Fi password.)

After receiving the "Connection Successful" message, turn on your mobile device's "Auto Join" feature in the Wi-Fi/network settings.

Open the app once the water heater is connected to your preferred Wi-Fi connection, and the unit should now be visible.
