I have a list of possible improvements (as a Gen Z). The app has an great layout and is really organized, but it would be awesome to have a section of reputable sources and citations. Another topic that would make the app a little better is a ask questions tab (that has an algorithm to delete spam posts). Also an interactive page where people can discuss with politicians or each other. All in all this is a fun and easy app to use. Getting information directly from a source and hearing different politician’s point of views will definitely help with my future assignments. ### 5/5 — I love this app so much *2021-06-08, version 1.4.0* This is one of the most amazing apps I have ever used. It is so informative and has no bias on the issues it discusses. It is informative, and I myself struggle at keeping informed and up to date on my information. But ASP organizes and provides accurate and understandable information, you need no prior knowledge about any of the subjects this app informs upon, which is a lot of subjects, and you will be in the loop faster and the news is incredibly reliable to anyone regardless of background. They have done a great job in getting a wide range of elected officials to contribute material and they host excellent bipartisan debates. This allows you to connect with your elected officials and receive easily digestible content regardless of your existing knowledge. Truest form of a non-opinionated information based service for the people! As I have read somewhere it is “Captain America captaining America”(I know I brought it up😒)! Thank you Chris and Mark for allowing me and everyone else to learn from the people we vote for. I have officially started to vote because of this app! Few years ago I went to vote however I had no real information regarding the candidates. The voters office told me to read synopsis’ and check news outlets to learn more about the candidates. Based on my research and the information I found that was not going to work for me. Luckily, “A Starting Point” has the topics for which I can learn about, directly from the people that are apart of those decisions. A side note is I find it interesting some of the way the speakers counter as they don’t seem to process the information from the other individual, as they seem to have made up there minds a little bit already(on both sides, then again if we all sat around philosophizing would anything get done). We have to be prepared for the unknown by unknowing everything we think is true. That being said I can be overwhelmingly one sided! Again thank you so much for this platform of pure information!!! Now that the app no longer has these problems, I am happy to say it serves as an excellent way for people to learn about the several relevant and oftentimes complex political topics. Glad this app exists! Old review: I want to start by saying that the concept that this app goes for is excellent, and highly commendable. I think it’s important to make politics accessible to everyone and it makes me happy that people are trying to do that. That being said, the app itself needs an update. It crashes repeatedly whenever I try to go into the “Starting point” section. And it will likely do this in other places as well. So if you download it (around the time I’m writing this review), just be prepared for some bugs Once that’s been fixed I’ll change my rating or write a new one. ### 5/5 — Love the information *2020-12-24, version 1.1.10* The information and layout is great. Easy to search by topic. Only CRITICISM would be a need to create a way to filter by state. So that my states daily points are at the top. The information that is here and updated daily is amazing. Be sure to click the 3 bars on top left and go through each as there is just so much information. Clicked on two interviews. Both good, but when I tried to check out other interviews it would not allow me to navigate the site; it was stuck on the interview I wanted to leave. I will try it again. Sad it isn’t working properly. ### 2/5 — Sparse *2022-11-02, version 2.2.20* If you’re looking for links to brief on-camera interviews of elected officials giving opinions on topics the app is ok. If, however, you were looking for an app that would help you keep track of your federal or state representatives’ record and opinions on current topics and legislation it’s not useful. It doesn’t even include contact information for them. ### 3/5 — Good concept! Would be better if… *2022-11-02* I immediately downloaded when I saw this app featured on the App Store front page. I watched videos on two topics and was a bit frustrated by the media controls. They don’t match with consistent UI from iOS (play/pause off to one side instead of centered), couldn’t find closed captions, and the video stream stuttered right away for both videos I tried to watch, on a stable Wi-Fi connection. I ended up deleting the app after I heard one politician tell a straight up lie that “marijuana has addictive properties” and that legalization in my state of TX would bring in the drug cartels. (Think about it, if it’s legalized, cartels wouldn’t be in business anymore since their product would be available at common grocery stores and specialty shops, like CBD outlets.) That blatant lie shows me this app prioritizes Both Sides-ism, even when both sides are not playing by the same rules (truth and integrity MATTER.) ### 3/5 — Fantastic *2021-01-05, version 1.1.10* We should have something like this in the UK! Perhaps collaborate with a UK citizen and create a similar thing for other countries (perhaps even places such as Australia, rather than just USA). ### 4/5 — Closed captions, please *2023-01-14, version 2.2.21* Just downloaded it, so not my final review yet. First thing I noticed is that there is no closed caption on the videos. Could you please provide either closed caption or write out their statements in de field below. ### 4/5 — Greatly satisfied *2020-10-26, version 1.0.9* I was so happy to see that this exists. I am so pleased to see a very accessible way to hear from representatives about matters that are really tough to grasp for the layperson. I would like to see representatives from other parties available to describe their perspectives on these matters as well. Third party representatives are not as ubiquitous as Democrat and Republican but they’re important and prominent enough, in my opinion, to deserve a platform like this to express their opinion. There were two other candidates on the ballot this year, this is more than just Republican and Democrat. ### 4/5 — Great concept *2020-07-30, version 1.0.6* This is a solid resource. The app has crashed every few videos for me, so hopefully that gets resolved soon. I would also like to see more topics on foreign policy and more policy centric discussions because it is a bit broad right now. ### 4/5 — A Good Start *2020-07-15, version 1.0.4* First, one small gripe with the Counterpoints interface: I’d love a way to pause the videos and then pick up where I left off. Otherwise I’m a fan of the app design. I downloaded exclusively for the Counterpoints section, and while I love the format, content that I’ve seen so far is very shallow. Now obviously this is a new platform, so contributors may be forgiven for wanting to play it safe in the shallow end. But I hope they get braver and take the conversation outside of approved talking points eventually. My suggestion: let in voices that aren’t confined to the two-party core. Let third parties get involved. I think it would help the conversation go deeper. This is an important time in America, and this platform has the potential to be just what we need. I hope as the platform moves past this initial phase, the conversation takes off its floaties and jumps into the deep end. ## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated) ### 5/5 — Please include an Analysis of Project 25 (I did do a search and couldn’t find) *2025-09-13* I like A Starting Point. There is something I’d like to see on it though. I’m currently reading the free Mandate for Leadership The Conservative Promise Project 25 Presidential Transition Project for the first time. It would be cool to see an analysis of this document over the year, almost like a year long book club to see what facts one party has to support it and which facts the other has against it, and where there is room for agreement. I’ve seen a tracker of how much of Project 25 the administration has completed and think an analysis of it will help both sides better understand the reasoning behind some of the changes and the direction we as a people are headed because there is so much fear on both sides which is completely justified because there are some rather scary patterns. ### 5/5 — The perfect breakdown *2025-06-23, version 2.2.21* I love the simple concise manner they present current events. Is That Possible? *2022-01-10* In a world where moderates are considered indecisive and where politics have become meshed with science, education, faith, health, and our sense of selves in a way our nation has not seen for many years, even the concept of an unbiased news feed is a novelty. The only way to be certain that what you hear is not being put through someone else’s filter is to hear it from the source. In politics, that is the politicians. Not their party, not a journalist who is interpreting the information, and certainly not from random people on the Internet who have an opinion that may or may not be informed. This app has the potential to help deep polarized politics by allow them the opportunity for officials to share their perspective in a tight enough timeframe that they really have to stick to their main bullet points and not wander off into partisan language. Thank you, thank you, thank you. After watching just a few interviews, I started to question my previous logic. I strongly recommend this app to anyone looking to get into politics in their future career.
