My app was updated automatically and now they want me to buy the other one. Updating produced a violin! No option given other than do not update if you want piano, I update automatically. In case the ABRSM IS NOT AWARE a violin is a totally different instrument. Clunky. ### 1/5 — Very expensive and VERY disappointing *2017-06-26* Having already paid for the ABRSM books and having seen some promise in some of the other official apps, I really hoped that this would bring something new and inventive to scales. It doesn't. It's a very clunky interface and all it does act as a little exam content guide. It's all been done much better elsewhere. The only 'fun' is a quiz which is just a practice diary and the ability to 'play along' which is quite frankly rubbish. I paid a huge amount for this application and it is a massive disappointment. I'm only using it because it was so expensive. I'm going to see if I can get a refund. They may improve it in the future but it will require the app to be completely rethought and rebuilt. The option choose as many octaves as I want. Ability to set the speed to whatever I want. Scales in various styles, such Galamian. Easy navigation. Feedback if I’m sharp or flat on a note. Is this too much to ask? ### 1/5 — Removed Piano *2020-10-21* Was a great app, then you removed the piano scales without warning and many of us with auto-update on had no choice but to find piano scales gone one morning. I’ve since discovered I can download the piano one for free with the ‘Complete Bundle’ feature in the App Store. Not the way to develop apps, not the way to treat paying customers. The new piano version forces horizontal use which is also a little frustrating for me. ### 1/5 — Frustrating *2020-09-09, version 2.0* I purchased the full version but it’s not letting me use it ### 1/5 — Removed piano content renders app useless to me *2020-08-30* I bought this app last year for the piano scales which were originally included in this product. Now those scales have been split off into a separate piano app, and I am encouraged to purchase that as well. And what then? Will that one turn into a clarinet app and I have to purchase another separate one for piano? And what then, this could go on forever. It’s simply untrustworthy. Please contact us at scalestrainer@abrsm.ac.uk so we can assist you further. ### 1/5 — Lost all scales from grade 5 2019-20 syllabus *2020-07-27* Was really happy with the app, but the app auto update removed all the piano scales, and when I downloaded the new scales trainer it does not contain the requirements for the previous syllabus which is still valid. Scales have been dramatically reduced down for 2020-21 so that means most of the scales are not covered, I’m not planning to much move to the new syllabus as I’ve already learnt my pieces. I’m sure there are other people in similar shoes who ended up postponing their exams. Is it possible to make the legacy version available for people who were working to the earlier syllabus?Thanks. ### 1/5 — Disgusted *2020-07-27* I bought a piano scales training app that mutated into a violin app after an auto update. This is really inept, please can I have my old app back? Please put grades 7 and 8in! ### 5/5 — Really effective *2022-09-28* I am a violin teacher and I find this app to be really accessible for young learners trying to navigate the world of scales. With backing track options, playalong guide, separate and slurred options, there’s not really anything jig not to like. It should t form the basis as the only tool but for those needing to work on their pitching and rhythm, it’s a really good starting block. Some dominant/diminished 7th and chromatic options would be good additions. ### 4/5 — Good but has bugs *2022-05-26* I purchased this for my daughter who is doing grade 5 violin. It’s galvanised her progress in the tedious business of scales, particularly with backing tracks. I would give it five stars but the app crashes when you try the backing track for arpeggios, chromatic scales and dominant/diminished 7ths. Please fix this, developers! Also, the link for support is broken. ### 4/5 — Good start and very useful *2016-07-10* Heard about this a couple of weeks ago and found it very helpful with my practice sessions. I'd like to see some selection options such as only major scales or chromatic scales. Would also be useful to limit the number of items in a quiz and for the ability to identify those pieces which I need to concentrate on. ### 3/5 — Good but clunky *2020-11-06* This app has some wonderful principles built onto it - but gets in its own way For instance - if you wish to listen to a scale and play along with it, you cant just click a ‘repeat’ button when it finishes. You have to click through two screens of re choosing the scale and then whether its single notes or slurred, to do it again. Pretty much every exercise is hampered by this lack of a repeat function. Also - the app assumes that as you progress through grades, that you no longer need to practice scales learned in earlier grades. Navigating between grades is a multi step process and not intuitive. It would be great if it worked and my students are always so disappointed that it doesn’t. ### 2/5 — App crashes - hasn’t been fixed *2023-03-18* I recently purchased the ABRSM app violin scales trainer. In principle, it’s a great aid. But it doesn’t work! As one reviewer stated last May 2022, the app crashes when you try to play backing tracks for arpeggios, chromatics, dominant/diminished 7ths. Nearly a year later, this bug hasn’t been fixed and the link to the developer at the app store is broken. My child loves the backing tracks for practicing the scales so is massively disappointed that they don’t work properly. This is also a bit of a con, for a pricey app! ### 2/5 — Where is my piano scales app? *2020-08-12* I used both the piano and violin functions but piano appears to have been taken away ! The violin app now asks me to choose which instrument, but this question is redundant if there only violin available.
