### 2/5 — Lots of features, hard to use UI

*2022-12-15*

Refining your brew is much easier with this app: tracking the type of brew (espresso, pour-over, etc), the bean, weights, grind setting, ratio and so on is great. Rating your brew and making notes is also great.

Having said that it’s a clumsy app with a design that looks about 3 iOS versions behind. Some features are very hard to find and very unintuitive, such as setting a new timing profile for a brewing method. I’ve also yet to discover a way to name the custom methods.

In a word, the app is klunky. I’m hoping these folks take the Apple Human Interface Guidelines to heart and maybe book a UX help session at the Apple Developer Conference. They could turn this so-so app into an indispensable accessory for the scale.

There’s also the Brewmaster app which is has a much better UI… but is missing key features found only in this app.

### 3/5 — Don’t use the app

*2022-08-11*

The Pearl is an amazing scale. Thought I’d check to see if the app provides any value add. Short answer, it doesn’t. The app is shockingly bad and I won’t be using it. Actually makes my life simpler as I’m tired of the “app for that” problem for all my smart devices. Having one less app makes my life simpler.

### 2/5 — Account issues

*2022-05-05*

I bought the lunar 2021 model thinking this would be a nice addition. But lo and behold I cannot make an account it keeps telling me app failed to register?¿? Furthermore I take it that this is only for pour over, does it do any other types of brewing French press arrow press? Having the ability to use and dial in for arrow press would be a ultimate bonus!!
Any help in this area would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

### 1/5 — Made for iPod Touch Gen 2

*2021-10-27, version 2.6.17*

Let’s just say interfaces, software or hardware, aren’t Acaia’s sweet spot.

### 1/5 — Scale requires app

*2021-04-27, version 2.6.15*

Apps are known to back door cyber threats. So good to avoid. Acaia forces their customer to download their app to update software. Why a perfect product needs updating is beyond me but you’ll get locked out. Unlocking it is not obvious. Companies should not assume a person lives their life in apps.

### 1/5 — Make more effort

*2021-02-24, version 2.6.14*

This app needs to match the quality of the scale, period.

### 1/5 — App is weak tea.

*2021-02-03, version 2.6.14*

Scale spontaneously changed timer modes. Instead of having easily accessible controls in the app I have to navigate the Byzantine menu on the scale. You skipped the basics. Zero value in the app.

### 1/5 — Shameful

*2021-01-16, version 2.6.14*

The iPhone X came out in 2017. This app has not been built with support for it, which makes the keyboard look wrong and puts black bars on the top and bottom. How can you not be bothered to update your app for over three years? Apple should remove apps like this from the app store.

### 1/5 — App makes me regret buying this scale

*2021-01-10*

The reason I bought this scale, instead of one 1/4 of the price, was for an easy to use app that would step me through the brewing process. The app is poorly made and while it appears to get bug fixes, it is clearly ancient. It doesn’t scale to the full resolution of my phone. Instead of making the app intuitive you scroll through a bunch of grainy low res images with instructions you’re supposed to remember as you’re brewing. Literally the entire value prop of the scale (there aren’t even instructions in the box) is this app, and it is garbage.

### 1/5 — Perhaps the worst app design I’ve ever seen

*2021-01-08, version 2.6.14*

Buggy AF on iPhone 11. Nice scale. Terrible app. Next button hidden when trying to set preferences (can only cancel) impossible menu structure, navigation doesn’t work. Needs a total redesign from the ground up.

### 1/5 — Not working on iPhone 12

*2020-12-31, version 2.6.14*

Keeps crashing at random points.

### 1/5 — Please fix the UI

*2020-12-25, version 2.6.14*

The app looks fine on an iPhone 7 but looks horrible on anything from the last 5 years

### 1/5 — Just tried out and I’m very disappointed

*2020-12-10, version 2.6.14*

The out-of-the-box experience is nowhere near reflective of the price point for the scale. The app looks terrible on my iPhone 12 Pro Max and the connection process was very clunky. Please spend some serious time and energy on the overall user experience.

### 2/5 — Concept great; execution poor

*2020-11-27, version 2.6.14*

Love the idea of using the app with my Acaia scale but the execution of the app is poor. I use it exclusively for espresso and yet cannot change the method from V60. Navigating around the app - even to find method - is difficult. On the positive side it is the only way to see the battery state for the scale. Why there is no battery level indicator on the scale itself beggars belief. Nothing more frustrating than having the scale tell you it’s out of batteries when starting out to express. Come on acaia; give us an app which is as good as your excellent scale.

### 2/5 — Need some demos

*2020-10-26, version 2.6.14*

I was very excited to get the pearl s scale, but I am wondering if it was money well spent. There just needs to be more instructions on how to maximize the scales abilities, but also the apps. I do not think I am using them to their maximum ability, so can I please get some help. On my scale app it says v60 but I am using a Chemex and Auropress, so how do I change this?

### 3/5 — What does this add to my coffee?

*2020-09-20, version 2.6.14*

The app needs some layout and design rethinking... but more findamentally, the entire concept is a bit of a miss. The app, and the “smart” part of the Acaia scale itself, don’t really make coffee brewing easier or more fun. Actually, the opposite. Just more buttons to push and things to make one irritable. Sure, it somewhat automates note taking with “brewprints” but frankly I find it less of a hassle to simply jot down some notes manually in a Notes app. I suppose if you are really compelled by the Internet of Things concept it might do something for you, but I am finding it hard to understand the advantages... Time to just go back to my old Hario dumb scale? I didn’t think about scales at all when I used it and my coffee was just as good.

### 3/5 — Updates needed

*2020-08-26, version 2.6.14*

Black borders around the app. Please update the app to scale to the full screen of the iPhone X/11 Pro.

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — Necessary evil?

*2025-06-16*

Couldn’t get the updater to work with my Pixel 9. Reddit said “use an iPad, it just works”. Failed for 20 minutes of trying, then miraculously it worked. Hope I never have to update again. “just didn’t work”

### 1/5 — $250 scale $0 app

*2025-02-06*

How is it possible that premium hardware maker abandoned their app. When you buy the scale it literally advertised on the box about the app store. why not just remove this app and just stop lying to people. I wouldn’t buy this scale if i knew about this app. Sad

### 1/5 — Not a good app

*2024-06-15*

It’s trash not worth your time, very outdated, the interface of the app looks like it was made for iPhone 3G

### 1/5 — Summer school project?

*2024-06-10*

This app is so clunky it’s incredible that it came from the same company making beautiful scales. It seems the company is not interested in putting out a better app. It would be great to just open source the app and let’s fix it.

### 1/5 — Ugh

*2024-02-27, version 2.6.17*

Barely usable, let alone valuable in its current form.

### 1/5 — Very Outdated

*2023-05-11*

I had no idea the app was this bad prior to the purchase of the scale. No excuse for app this bad when a scale costs $250. Will likely return the scale based off of how crappy this app is.

### 1/5 — Get Brewmaster instead

*2023-02-14, version 2.6.17*

I really can’t understand why Acaia has so many apps. All of the Acaia product line functionality should exist in the same app. In its current state, the Acaia software experience is extremely frustrating and disjointed. I’ve downloaded, used, and deleted all of the Acaia apps. Save yourself the time and just get the brewmaster app. It has FAR more functionality than this app and is also made by Acaia…. But you’ll still need to download the separate app to update your scale 🤦🏻.

Acaia: Add update functionality to the brewmaster app and get all these other half-baked apps off the App Store!!

### 1/5 — So bad.

*2023-01-24*

Can’t believe how terribly thought out this app is. And glitchy. Do better Acaia.

### 1/5 — Poorly designed

*2022-07-02*

You wouldn’t expect a premium device like this to come with such a low quality app. I only use it because I have to, but it takes the joy out of the experience.

### 1/5 — Fake App Store Screenshots

*2021-11-05*

The screenshots on the app store are a lie. They show the app displaying on the full screen through the notch, however the app does not actually do this! I tested this on an iPhone 13 Pro, an 11 Pro and an X and all of them are pillarboxed. If your app doesn’t work as advertised on the very first phone with a notch then it makes me wonder if it ever worked.

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — I only use the app’s remote scale feature

*2025-06-27*

I purchased the Acaia Lunar scale when I bought my espresso machine in 2021. As much as I like the scale, this review is about the app. There are some interesting features that I might have a look at eventually but I only use the app when I’m weighing something that covers the scale’s built in display. I use this app for cold brew prep and the occasional pour over. I use the scale for espresso every day, which doesn’t require the app.

### 5/5 — It’s

*2021-03-22, version 2.6.14*

Good

### 5/5 — Simple and easy to use

*2020-06-03, version 2.6.13*

This app is a huge benefit in owning an Acaia scale. It’s easy to use and the remote scale is great when you can’t see the scales display.

### 5/5 — Works great

*2020-03-22, version 2.6.12*

Have no issues. Actually think it enhances the scale quite a bit

### 5/5 — Awesome Scale, Fun App!

*2014-05-04*

First off, this app is of course for the Acaia Coffee Scale - BUT, if you don’t have the scale you can still download this app and see other people’s brew methods, which is pretty cool!

With all that being said, this scale and app are a lot of fun - really make the brew process quite interactive and pushes you to better your processes.

### 4/5 — better coffee with this app

*2021-04-24*

I'm sorry people have trouble with this app! For me, on my iPhone X, it works perfectly. And by timing pourovers optimized for various driippers, it helps me make notably better coffee. I've been making pourover coffee for quite awhile, following directions I and others have seen online, but this app — paired with the scale — makes better coffee than I've made before.

It's true the app could be better designed. Acaia might hook up with an app design expert, and fix what seem like immature, things that apps once did, but that now wouldn't be tolerated in apps that functioned in a commercial arena, and have competition for what they do (as this one doesn't).

One example, thst others have noticed. The app will guide us through using a great variety of ways of making coffee, but it defaults to the Hario V60 dripper, which is always selected when the app opens. Which is fine if you have a V60 and always use it, but if you always use something else, then you're forced to take a extra step each time you use the app. Silly. And so easy for an app designer to fix!

There are some other things, and it's also true, as people have said here, that the scale seems baffling at first.

But, bottom line — the app works perfectly for me, and helps me make better coffee. Never crashes, easy to use, never fails to connect via Bluetooth to the scale. So four stars, despite things Acaia should fix.

### 4/5 — Very detailed, few flaws

*2020-05-27*

I’ve been using this app to track my recipes and it’s been great as a coffee diary! There are some glitches with the coffee bean search and creating new coffee bean profiles BUT the huge plus is that you can EXPORT all your data into a pdf. This is HUGE! Afterall, why would you want all your coffee info “stuck” inside an app?

### 4/5 — Need Pour sound louder

*2019-03-03, version 2.6.7*

Great compliment app to this amazing scale. Within the brewing print process, it would be most helpful to replace the sound to Pour to be much louder and annoying. I tend to get distracted and would love a bigger beep/ding/nudge to Pour.

### 4/5 — Overall a good app but needs minor fixes

*2015-11-27, version 2.5.2*

Overall a good app, but it needs support for iPhone 6/6s and 6+/6s+ screen resolutions, as it would greatly improve the user experience.

### 4/5 — Getting better

*2014-10-05, version 2.3.8*

New features like any number for grind, bean stash, F temperatures are making this even better
