I've done my research on the this subject. ### 5/5 — Frankly it’s out on its own in a new land of sonic possibilities *2020-11-21* Using this app feels a bit like driving a more powerful car than you’re used to. It suddenly revs up and produces a depth and richness of sound that I just can’t get from other synths. It may be to do with the sheer level of minute control over the sound, down to individually tweaking each one of 512 partials in each of 7 blocks in each of 4 channels, plus modulation, plus sequencing and arpeggiator plus effects ... the interface does take a bit of getting used to but worth it. Oh and the new randomiser for creating usable random patches ... if you’re into evolving ambient sounds this is a must but it does a lot more. ### 4/5 — Fascinant synthé *2020-11-11* Un must pour la synthèse additive sous ios ! Seule la sélection hasardeuse des partiels (même avec stylet) lui vaut une étoile.Peut être qu’un zoom sur les harmoniques ou une vue en liste permettrait l’édition précise des partiels ? ### 5/5 — Gorgeous additive synthesis (rich & deep)! 🎃 *2020-09-30* Additive synthesis is really special and unique (and somewhat of a niché) compared to the ubiquitous subtractive methodology (mainly due to its complexity to control and program effectively) but the touchscreen has essentially really opened up the exciting possibilities for this unique synthesis as drawing waveforms and modulations etc is as intuitive as it gets and consequently this synth is a joy to use and explore (and sounds really incredible)! It’s also really powerful as it has some really unique features which allows you to really push the envelope of what’s possible sonically! ### 4/5 — Really Interesting! *2020-09-20* This is a great synthesizer; it continues the really innovative approach to additive synthesis taken by Virsyn; there are some fascinating possibilities. The one irritating feature is the wave sequencing section; it’s a very cool design, but it’s really hard to find just the right spot to make changes to the regions. But I’m getting used to it, slowly... The sequencer could also use some additions; it currently goes forward only; it would be nice to have a back & forth option, and maybe a random option. Quite a learning curve with this one, but that’s part of the fun, for me anyway. ### 5/5 — Amazing Level of Innovation! *2020-09-08* This app is so much fun to play with. Prepare to become addicted. I’d recommend browsing around the manual and maybe watching a YouTube vid - then just jump right in. First time I opened it, I was overwhelmed, I tried to just use the manual but that wasn’t any fun. Once you have the broad strokes, you’ll find yourself coming across happy accidents. Try everything! Well done to the dev, I tip my additive cap to a you good sir. ### 5/5 — Awesome synth *2020-09-07* I’ve updated my review from 3* to 5* after spending some more time with it and the updates that have made editing easier with being able to solo the parts and blocks. It takes a bit of time to get used to but this synth is very powerful. The fact that you can alter the sound in different ways for each of the 512 partials is totally different from what you get with normal subtractive synths. For example, by changing the pan position at such a granular level you can widen the sound without the mono compatibility phasing issues other methods produce. Changing the decay at different levels for the partials can give a very nice plucked sound which would not be possible using a standard envelopes. Wavetable synthesis-ish like behavior taken to the fullest extent I’ve ever seen on AUV3! My only wish as of right now (still gotta keep exploring the app) is that hopefully the tables will be “drawable” by multiple fingers in the future. An app that does something similar (or actually 2, by the same dev) are PixelWave and spectrum gen. Both of these allow us to do something really similar but using multiple fingers - this would be very welcome in Addstation as it makes it possible to essentially create very complex waves on the fly by using one hand to draw these (with 4-5 fingers) while playing the keyboard with the other hand (either software keys or hardware). VirSyn! Please do consider implementing this, it would make this little jewel even more brilliant! ### 4/5 — Kawai K5000 killer *2020-09-04* I no longer miss my K5000 and its control over partials. This beats it for sound and ease of editing. Thanks! A couple of requests and a bug: Would be nice to have a way to mute parts and adjust their volumes in the Block Edit window. And maybe a sequencer for the blocks? And a way to use the Sequence page without obstructing the time bar with our fingers? And numbers on the Block and Part tabs to remind us which element we’re editing, as well as a way to advance to a different block/part without going back repeatedly to the main window? Lastly, a bug report: Piano scale picker is blank on iPhone 6 iOS 12.4.8. Thanks for this awesome sound creator and interface! Love your apps! ## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated) ### 1/5 — One of my best synths *2025-01-15* Ever since updating my iPad to iOS18, all my many Cubasis 3 projects that used Addstation presets before the update now no longer work, I constantly get the “Plug-in Not Found”. When I relaunch Addstation in the affected projects, there is no indication of what presets were originally used and without me having a super memory, there is no way I can restore my original project. All new projects after updating to iOS18 will open as normal. 2 Years Ago. I purchased this awesome synth last September (2021) and have used it extensively in many Cubasis3 projects, it really has mind blowing presets that can be expanded further to create even more complex sounds. There are many times where I just go through the presets range to familiarise myself with them and end up creating a completely new project. This is definitely one of my “go to synths”. ### 1/5 — Funktioniert nicht mehr. As a plug in, Using drop down menu to select patches Is labourious!!! And long You need to add < > buttons so performers can instantly switch patches. This needs to happen NOW don’t make us wait. This is a complete kill joy being force to use a slow drop down menu system for every patch change. ### 3/5 — Buggy as an AUv3 plugin *2025-07-26* Can’t seem to get this to work inside Nanostudio 2 as a plugin. The audio is distorted and harsh. Only when I open the standalone version of AddStation alongside Nanostudio 2 does the audio clear up. ### 4/5 — Help! Compatibility w/ Logic Pro & GarageBand is broken *2024-11-30* Please investigate. This no longer validates as an AU in Logic Pro on macOS and in both versions of GarageBand. I actually bought this after I picked up a K5000 and found out this developer was a long time, active K5000 who made this app! The K5000 sounds different, sure, the effects and that are part of the sound. But if I had to say which one is better? It would have to be the Addstation. Its like a K5000 updated to today's specs. I still love my K5000 though, the feel of the keyboard alone is enough to hang on to it... and it looks sexy too! ### 5/5 — Oops… Harry Gohs apps! *2022-11-01* I think I mentioned a competitor’s name by mistake in the first review. The sentiment was correct, the name was wrong! Let me recap: This was the most recent purchase of this dev’s products. I have purchased newer apps of his, and this just goes to show that I’ve enjoyed them! I’ve watched the reviews over and over, judiciously choosing which ones to buy. NONE of them have ever disappointed me! You can create acoustical percussive sounds as well as long evolving dreamy landscapes. What I will say is, that this is very special indeed. I will also say that it’s the only synth I have heard that I want to learn all about. The most meaningful words I have to say are, thank you VirSyn. ### 5/5 — Special Great *2020-11-28* Once you catch on, you realize that you have something very deep and worth exploring. I think AddStation can put out the widest combination of sounds and modulations of any other music making app in the store. Of course I am not including DAWs that can have infinite tracks playing all at the same time. I think that anyone into sounds, especially being able to tweak and morph and have fun, will love AddStation. The important thing is to dig in and give yourself some time to get used to it. The presets are diverse, numerous and the best way to start. For me, there was a lot of: "So, that's how you do that" and "Wow, you can do that too". Also don't forget that since AddStation has an AUV3, you can easily modulate most or possibly all parameters. Once you get the app, don't stop exploring and trying different scenarios to maximize your fun. Virsyn is in my top 5 list of best developers of IPADOS/IOS music making apps. I buy every app that they release before even knowing the details. I have never been disappointed in the slightest. The interfaces, the sounds, the intuitiveness and everything else that determines a good app is common to all Virsyn apps. You can see right away that they are dedicated to making apps tbat make sense to almost everyone. It amazes me that apps still come out that require you to squint or use a magnifying glass to see some things on the screen. I think that apps fir touch screen devices should be easy to see and use, like on any other type of device. Virsyn is great and their apps are great. They deserve my time to expose just how great because of all the pleasure I have had because of their brilliant software.
