### 4/5 — A 5-star app that STILL isn’t.

*2023-09-28, version 11.2*

I’m still waiting for that simple bookmark sorting feature. 11 yrs and counting!

To the reviews that say there’s no thesaurus…follow the word links. Every word on any page is a live link to another page with more similar words. Isn’t that what a thesaurus is? Links to words that are similar?

It’s not a 3-star app either. I’ve used this app for years(iPad 2, 2012 I think?) but even after all this time, the bookmarked word list STILL has no sorting function, not even alphabetically. If you’ve bookmarked hundreds of words as I have, it’s a slog to do it manually. Grab a W word from most recent bookmarked words and drag it past all the other words to its rightful place at the bottom of the list. Now do that with each unsorted new word. The 2nd issue is not being able to backup said bookmark list as separate readable list file to store and print out for study purposes. All other mentioned attributes in other reviews are true. There are even adapted foreign word phrases like sotto voce and noblesse oblige, a good amount of slang, and outdated but fun words like snollygoster and flapdoodler that do have a purpose when no other word would do the job. And for the consummate wordsmith, the thesaurus feature can keep you entertained for hours. For me, it’s a 5-star app that isn’t. Add the aforementioned vital features and it’s worth a whole sky full of stars!

### 4/5 — It’s good, could be better

*2021-09-15, version 11.2*

Everything is good.
One suggestion: some words have different verb and noun pronunciations so if the app can add the feature to differentiate the pronunciation between verb and noun (as in the word “implement”) then it would be perfect

### 4/5 — Excellent. Needs bookmark export.

*2020-08-16, version 11.2*

This dictionary is far above average — excellent in many regards.

My one wishes that they would add the ability to export bookmarked words – e.g. for vocabulary building, or other uses.

### 3/5 — Lists

*2020-02-01, version 11.2*

Great dictionary are but I wish there was a way to create lists

### 5/5 — Love this app

*2020-01-12, version 11.2*

It is my go to for scientific terms and pronunciation of difficult words. And I can save them in a word list for review. Can not do without it.

### 5/5 — Scarlet Pimpernel

*2020-01-12, version 11.2*

Periodically I read and of course some of the things I read aren’t always fully understood by myself. Today I am reminiscent of a past I had known for love of life itself and to help stand up even if not asked. At times we must do things that lead us down paths that might be better suited for a Knight of more distinguished honor and than oneself. Being truly humbled by such a vast amount of the English languages which has included many slang terminologies. Having forgotten many things I find myself coming back to attempt to concrete things in my mind and yet life has been nothing less than an amazing journey from reading hardback books flipping endlessly through pages to this day of technology in which I write this review on my cellular phone. I am a simple man but humbled by having found a great dictionary that has rekindled my intrigue concerning reading and keeping things such as this dictionary in a safe place so as to always have if nothing else, a memory of a dream and then being reminded that we must always strive for better things and through that, Growth Through Knowledge and understanding.

### 5/5 — Best Dictionary - Hands Down

*2020-01-04, version 11.2*

This is literally the best dictionary in the App Store. It has all the words that the others don’t have. Seriously, try looking up chthonic in another dictionary.

For me the point of a dictionary is to be able to look up the words I don’t know, and this is the only dictionary that has all of the esoteric words I might come across.

And I don’t usually leave reviews, but I want to do what I can to help keep this app around because, let’s be honest, most people aren’t looking at quality dictionary apps. They’re using whatever free app they can get and. It realizing what their missing.

ALL THAT being said, I wish this had an offline version. And a Word of the Day function.

### 5/5 — Fine app

*2019-12-29, version 11.2*

Useful dictionary and as a form of encyclopaedia especially for American forms of English and USA data. Excellent value for all word buffs and crossword fans.

### 5/5 — 11y after and I’m still using it!

*2019-12-23, version 11.2*

Amazing app!

### 5/5 — Excellent app

*2019-12-23, version 11.2*

Best dictionary I’ve seen. I hope they don’t update it. It’s clean, useful and comprehensive. I read philosophy and often find words I’ve never heard of before. This dictionary dispatches all unfamiliar words and has not failed me yet (one or two years in!)! It is well worth the investment which is nominal anyways. I love that it has etymology too. I love seeing the origins and usages of words, and this app sates that curiosity with concision and clarity! Thanks.

### 5/5 — I can recommend this app to anyone

*2019-12-22, version 11.2*

I‘ve been using this app for several years and have always been very happy with the results. What I find particularly helpful is the way synonyms automatically appear, giving you useful alternatives. The whole thing is very well thought out.

### 5/5 — My favorite dictionary program

*2019-12-09, version 11.2*

I use it all the time and book mark / save feature is very good. Wish there was a way to export to notes your list of words but still gets high marks from me.

### 5/5 — JParkie

*2019-12-06, version 11.2*

I love this dictionary - and use it all the time.

### 5/5 — Everything you’d ever need in a dictionary - very easy to use.

*2019-10-24, version 11.2*

Especially like the way every word in the description is a link

### 5/5 — Very handy, using every day

*2019-10-21, version 11.2*

I read complicated books with unusually wide technical vocabulary. This app is very useful for me.

### 5/5 — Útil

*2019-10-08, version 11.2*

Muy útil, sobre todo para saber cómo pronunciar los pasados de muchos verbos y palabras poco comunes

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — Ridiculous!

*2024-01-16, version 11.2*

This has to be THE WORST dictionary ever! A dictionary should define a word- Period! It does not need to list EVERY possible use of that word as a separate entry!! And should not list every phrase the word is used in as separate entries!! Type in “A”, “And”, “At”, etc- and there are literally HUNDREDS of entries for the word! A few examples can be easily listed in the definition, NOT as separate entries!!
A dictionary SHOULD be scrollable- one should be able to type in a few letters and see the words beyond that in the entries, without having to change one letter to continue thru the list! For example: if I type “rad”… I should not have to change the “d” to an “e” to continue scrolling! Obscene slang words are generally not included in dictionaries, they are put in urban or slang dictionaries, and not listed hundreds of times in a row listing every slang phrase ever known! Misspelled words should not be listed as entries- the search feature would take a person to the proper spelling!
Don’t bother with this dictionary, it is not worth the aggravation!!

### 1/5 — No synonyms

*2021-12-25, version 11.2*

Indicated as a great thesaurus but only offers a handful of synonyms and only ny reading through the definitions of a word

### 1/5 — Has no authentic pronunciations

*2020-03-29, version 11.2*

This app is not forthright about its "pronunciation feature". It claims it has "superior pronunciations" from three different English-speaking regions yet all it does is make your phone read it, ie. machine-pronounced that sounds flat and unnatural. This is NOT superior in anyway compared to what digital dictionaries normally provide: vetted human-recorded pronunciations with clear dictions and accents from native speakers.

### 1/5 — Changes

*2018-07-01, version 11.0*

Definitions aren’t correct.

### 1/5 — What about Canada?

*2017-06-25, version 10.0*

Where's the Canadian English?
Don't we count?
I'll give it 5 stars when we rank as important too. Especially with the release of the updated Oxford Canadian Edition no justification for not updating your app too!

### 1/5 — Ich will das alte Icon zurück!

*2013-12-15, version 7.4*

Flat ist das neue hässlich! Dann noch dieses kunterbunte 0815 Icon.

### 1/5 — User1

*2012-05-20, version 3.4*

leider nicht soviel wert wie erwartet.
Werde sofort deinstallieren, um den
Platz für was anderes zu verwenden.

### 1/5 — Finally the app logo was fixed

*2012-03-20, version 3.4*

Very good dictionary.
I bought this Sept 2009 and it was on sale.
Why is it still so? SCAM!!!
1 stars till app description is fixed
otherwise 5, ok

### 1/5 — Improvement

*2011-07-08, version 3.2*

Better if audio add it in.

### 1/5 — Useless

*2011-03-20, version 3.2*

I don't like it. Intricate and awkward. Don't buy it.

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — My go to dictionary

*2026-02-27, version 12.0*

Free. No adds. Fast. Does not collect user data.

Links to similar and opposites. More specific alternatives, less specific alternatives. Pronunciation. Usage examples. Origin/etymology.

Well organized and easy to read. Simple and to the point. No word of the day or gimmicky distractions.

I offloaded the Oxford and American dictionary apps in favor of this one.

### 5/5 — Excellent Dictionary

*2025-03-26, version 12.0*

Many features, no ads and only $3.99. Just get it!

### 5/5 — The best

*2024-12-30, version 12.0*

Simply the best dictionary in the AppStore

### 5/5 — 12 years of use

*2024-08-22, version 11.2*

Been using it since I came out 12 some years ago. Not sure what more you can ask for out of an app. It’s a dictionary. It has every word I look up.

### 5/5 — Great App!

*2023-02-09, version 11.2*

I’ve had this App for years and I absolutely love it! I use it daily for school.

### 5/5 — All the words

*2020-12-25, version 11.2*

It has literally every word I’ve looked up and I read a lot. Compare to the other apps, this is 332 mb; others are 40 or 90. Any proper name, place name, mythological figure, many foreign words. Also will pronounce a word for you. Also gives pretty decent etymology.
Highly recommended.

### 5/5 — Succinct and clear

*2020-08-02, version 11.2*

This has been my favorite dictionary for years. I use several dictionary apps, but this dictionary stands out for the clarity of the brief definitions. It is available offline, and word definitions include less- and more-specific words, pronunciation, and an etymology section.

### 5/5 — excellent dictionary in reasonable price

*2020-05-29, version 11.2*

most of words that can’t find in others are found here

### 5/5 — Dictionary

*2020-02-01, version 11.2*

I use it frequently. Like it.

### 5/5 — Excellent dictionary

*2020-01-29, version 11.2*

This free app supplies all I need, simple meaning and derivation, even pronunciation. Well done.
