## What is AFRO | App for Rocks?

AFRO is an offline-first bouldering guidebook made for days on rock.

DISCOVER CLIMBING
Explore destinations, areas, sectors, boulders and problems through an interactive map and searchable guidebook. See grades, topo photos, climbing lines, first-ascent notes, parking and approaches before you leave home or while you are at the crag.

TAKE THE GUIDEBOOK OFFLINE
Download sector guides, photos and map data for remote trips. AFRO keeps your saved climbing information available without a signal, then synchronises updates when you reconnect.

PLAN WITH COLLECTIONS
Save boulders and problems into trip collections, share a collection with friends and keep a simple group tick list. It is an easy way to turn a long wish list into a practical plan for the day.

FIND CLIMBS THAT SUIT YOU
Use powerful search and filters to find climbs by name, grade, place and difficulty. BetaSnake can match climbs by grade and body-size preferences using approved beta videos and privacy-protected community evidence.

KEEP A PRIVATE LOGBOOK
Record ascents, attempts and notes in an encrypted, offline-capable logbook. Your private diary stays separate from community feedback and public guidebook content.

CONTRIBUTE LOCAL KNOWLEDGE
Signed-in climbers can add boulders, problems, topo photos and lines, parking and approach paths. Contributions are reviewed before publication and handled under AFRO’s versioned Creative Commons agreement.

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 1.40.2 — 2026-08-29

AFRO 1.40.2 makes the guidebook more reliable, easier to navigate and more rewarding to contribute to.

• See the new public Community Leaderboard, with all-time rankings for approved guidebook contributions and clear category standings.
• Find Support AFRO and the Leaderboard directly from the redesigned Dashboard, with simpler settings and account controls.
• Receive cleaner, grouped notifications for collection changes, guidebook updates, contribution reviews and moderation.
• Download and update offline sectors more reliably, including automatic recovery from a temporary iOS database interruption.
• Start a fresh Capture after completing a multi-photo contribution, with safer handling while uploads are in progress.
• Enjoy clearer Collections controls, faster leaderboard switching and improved loading feedback.
• Open the map to a useful Western Cape overview when no previous position or device location is available.
• Edit one inclusive display name while keeping existing account details intact.

We’ve also updated Expo and its native dependencies, strengthened sync safeguards and polished narrow-screen layouts.

### 1.40.0 — 2026-08-19

AFRO 1.40.0 is our biggest guidebook update yet.

• Plan trips with Collections: save boulders and problems, share lists and keep a group tick list.
• Stay informed with optional updates for the sectors you download.
• Navigate more smoothly with refined maps, clearer climb details and more reliable map sheets.
• Capture and contribute boulders, problems, topo photos, parking and approach paths with improved field workflows.
• Keep a private, offline-capable ascent logbook and find climbs that suit you with BetaSnake.
• Enjoy stronger offline sync, search, filtering, deep links and reliability throughout.

Thanks for helping us build a useful, community-powered guidebook for climbers.

### 1.30.8 — 2026-08-09

AFRO 1.30.7 makes days at the crag smoother and more reliable.

• A redesigned live path-recording map keeps your route visible while you walk.
• “Fit path” now centres your recorded route correctly after you move the map.
• High Accuracy GPS is easier to understand and remains available while recording in the background.
• Offline contributions and queued uploads recover more reliably when your connection returns.
• Map sheets, long detail views and navigation behave more consistently.
• Sync progress is clearer, notch-safe and less distracting.
• General fixes improve map rendering, local data reliability and image caching.

Thank you for helping us test AFRO and build a practical, community-owned climbing guidebook.

### 1.30.6 — 2026-08-07

AFRO 1.30.0 brings a clearer first-run experience, richer maps, and voluntary support for the project.

• Welcome and first-launch guidance for guests, sign-in and account creation
• Voluntary AFRO Support for signed-in climbers (one-off or recurring) — separate from guidebook access
• Sharper online satellite imagery in Rocklands at close zoom, with clearer attribution
• Boulder outline overlays for selected sectors (including Backyard and Powerlines)
• Clearer approach-path display when several paths follow the same corridor
• Commons attribution on map and contribution details
• More reliable offline sector downloads, sync status and photo downloads
• More stable map results drawer and parking markers
• Dashboard and settings polish, plus clearer contribution and account-recovery flows

Thank you for helping keep a practical, community guidebook in climbers’ pockets.

### 1.29.5 — 2026-07-27

What’s New in AFRO 1.29.5

• Capture work is safer: active path and topo-line edits now warn before you leave, reducing accidental data loss.
• Path editing is clearer: zoom in to reveal add-point controls between existing points, then drag points into place.
• Topo-line drawing is easier to use: the magnified preview is offset away from your finger so the exact placement stays visible.
• Map shapes now have their own layer switch. Shapes appear on the Outdoors map, remain available offline, and use a clear grey fill with darker outlines while climbing markers stay on top.
• Explore now focuses on destinations with published problems, keeping empty destinations out of the main browsing flow.
• Capture, logbook navigation and map interactions received additional reliability and interface polish.
