### 5/5 — Too hard

I found the challenges to be too hard i am not unable to win those cards for the rest the game is amazing

### 5/5 — Fast fun. Smart design.

*2021-02-21*

I highly recommend this game to anyone considering it among the seemingly endless alternatives on the App Store. The truth is, however, that I have not come across anything else like this game. The multiplayer is fast and really well integrated. The UI and graphics work great together and facilitate allows the player to zone in and just play. No pay to win mechanics and a limited pool of improvements which is very quick to max out so the focus is all on the core gameplay which is really enjoyable and deep enough to keep your interest.

### 5/5 — Fantastic strategy

*2020-10-29, version 3.20*

Don’t be fooled by the simplistic looking graphics or the low price tag, this is an amazing game! It is a deck builder but plays as an 8 slot board game ‘war’. Over 4 rounds u build ur economy, buy ur deck n bolster ur town or walls or army or culture or more unscrupulous factions to your war effort. It’s perfectly balanced - beautifully executed and so simple, one can pick it up in 10 mins but spend days contemplating what cards to put in the ‘guaranteed’ slots for your heroes. It has a nice reward system as well as a campaign and online pvp options - I’m yet to try that as I have low data!! My other favourites are: ascension, hearth stone, mtg, hero realms and star realms so if u like any of those then this is well worth a look at. No pay wall at all.

### 5/5 — 最高のアプリ

間違いなく最高なんだけど、ランキング更新を放置されると萎える。まだ去年のままだし。何か理由があるのかな。

### 4/5 — Fun drafting game

*2020-07-12, version 3.20*

Really enjoying this game feels a bit like 7 Wonders but plays quicker. My only complaint is the amount of play you need to put in to unlock all the cards. This isn’t a pay-to-play game so why borrow this frustrating mechanism from those type of games?

### 5/5 — Zu Beginn sehr komplex

*2020-06-29*

Nach dem Tutorial hat man eigentlich mehr fragen als antworten

Aber wenn man sich 30 min damit beschäftigt geht es - einfach mal losspielen

Großer Spielspaß für Tüftler.

### 4/5 — More Languages

*2020-06-27*

I Loved 7 Wonders so I Really Liked the Game. Found on Steam and bought here as well. Nicely done.
But if it was on my Language (German) it would be Even better. Any Plans for Translations yet ?

### 5/5 — Got me into these kind of games

*2020-06-06, version 3.20*

Everything about “Age of Rivals” is my cup of tea. I like strategy games but more casual pacing. I’m not much of a strategist. But this game let me have the fun of building up imaginary civilizations while -also- making smart moves. Like, I actually learned how to quickly analyze the situation and take risks. It’s rewarding when the enemy plays into your hand; but I also learned something when they didn’t. The rule set is very easy to grasp, online play is quick, and it’s always fun seeing how new cards flip existing mechanics. Plus, the setting is evocative. There are card names like “Broken Tabletop,” “100 Day Festival, “Warrior Poets.” Gets the wheels turning. Way more fun than—King, Queen, Merchant, etc. I get that’s not a prerequisite for games like this, but for me the well thought scenarios and charming artwork sealed the deal. I’m actually surprised this game hasn’t gotten even more love. I first played it on itch.io and then snatched it up here—PC or mobile, gameplay is smooth.

If there’s ever a sequel, I think making better use of the setting would be a bonus. As much as I like reading, hiding the characters’ bios in a tiny paragraph is a waste of the (game) medium’s potential. It’s nice, but most players will just skip it. Further, there’s really not much incentive to pick one character over another except for aesthetics. Each character can have up to 3 guaranteed cards dealt during their turn, but at the end of the day you’re still deciding if you’re going for a rogue/economic victory or total martial victory, whatever combo is your fancy, no matter the portrait.

I remember thinking up my civ’s story during the final rounds when they slowly reveal and take away the 16 cards gathered for the final round (mostly ‘cause I had the time to do so—its a bit -too- long). But I thought it’d be a nice addition for fans of the game’s setting if the cards told a story at the end. Like, [Player 1]’s civilization focused on siege weaponry in round 1, made its wealth through gem trading and raiding the north, and ultimately proved victorious despite the loss of the Emperor’s Wall, etc. Dunno, when there’s optional reading most people skip it but I -love- when games acknowledge the specific wins, losses, and choices in a particular game. The reason I still play strategy games despite not being a strategist is because of the underlying -drama-.

Anyhoot, this is a long review but this game deserves it. I’m looking forward to more from this dev.

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — Too strong online players

*2020-10-18*

Maybe I’m too stupid, but it seems like my online competitors are chess champions or something. No ledger at all this time.
Only buy if you have friends to play with or you like to play vs AI

### 1/5 — Not worth the money

*2019-04-13, version 3.18*

Keeps loggin me out on the middle of online games

### 1/5 — Too much luck, too random

*2018-12-07, version 3.17*

Grind to unlock more cards you might see in a match. No control of whats in the deck accept being able to pick up to a whopping 3 cards and still, that doesnt garentee you’ll see them in a match. And the ai gets cards with scoring and attack numbers on them, about 75% of the time. Ai obviously has the edge in this wonky game.

### 1/5 — I Don’t get it

*2018-08-08, version 3.16*

Bought the game based on shining reviews. Played a few times and honestly don’t get it. Pretty boring for me. Makes one think the reviews were all written by family and friends of the developer. I wish I could have played before buying. It would be nice to have a return policy for these situations. Sad....

### 1/5 — Garbage

*2017-06-26, version 3.3*

The app won't even open. Have tried ten times and I only get the title screen. Then I come here and find out it's online only play too.

### 1/5 — I would just spend my money in a casino

*2017-06-23, version 3.3*

At first I saw the trailer and thought "Cool you get to have tons of decisions and have to buy wisely". Turns out that not only does the game randomly choose what you carry over through the rounds, and EVERY SINGLE EFFECT IS RANDOMLY CHOSEN. That's right, every single card is a coin flip and you have 0 control over anything. Don't know how they managed to do it but they somehow created a game with WORSE rng than Hearthstone. Also, you are forced to register an account online. There is no offline play. I guess if you want to spend your money on a pure mindless roulette game that you can only play at home then this is the game for you.

### 1/5 — Online play ONLY

*2017-06-22, version 3.3*

You can't play this game offline. Waste of money.

### 2/5 — Grind, to a halt; nothing more to achieve

*2020-09-26, version 3.20*

There’s just such a finite replayability factor.
You grind out all the challenges, unlock all the card packs, then...what?

Wouldn’t be as bad, except for how overly random most of the actual gameplay is. The ability to influence what comes up is limited, and still random enough you can end up not being able to get it anyways. What gets knocked out vs restored doesn’t seem to have a method to its madness.

Lots of potential, poorly utilized.

Fun time killer, though, I guess.

### 2/5 — Frustrating

*2019-07-02*

At first I liked the game, but the more I have played it the more I hate the randomness and the grind is really bad...

Did you win against a hard computer and think you should earn a decent amount of gold towards a pack? You have a 70% to get 40g, 20% chance to get 60, and 10% chance to get enough to get a pack. The grind is real with this game.

Have an ability that triggers when you play a card? If the computer plays one that triggers on play, theirs trigger first, and if that ability kills your card... then your ability never triggers because screw you. Yet another stupid rule.

Does the computer need 1 card to screw up everything you are doing on their last draft? 9 times out of ten they manage to get exactly what they need.

Round 2 & 3 are garbage because it’s random which of the 8 cards you get, this is the dumbest game mechanic ever... hey lets play D&D, you roll 8 die then at random the game will decide which dice count... stupid.

Round 4 is frustrating, because there is animation to put each card out then animation to tame each card away... it’s like watching a terrible PowerPoint presentation that is over animated.

**Developer response:** Hi, I'm sorry you're not liking the game, but I did want to clarify some points. First, the grind is finite because there are only a fixed number of packs to collect and then you'll have all the content. It's not like most CCGs where you need infinite packs because you keep getting duplicate cards you already have. In this game, you always progress towards finishing and it only takes about 80 packs. Second, the computer does not have an unfair advantage. Cards always trigger in the order they were played, so earlier cards trigger first. If there's a tie, then it's a coin toss. And there is no manipulation of the draft. If it seems like the computer always gets the card they need, I believe that's our human nature to notice bad luck more often than good luck. You can read more about the how the AI is fair on the blog at www.darkinertia.com. Thanks!

### 2/5 — Frustrating

*2018-03-08*

First, let me say, at first blush this is a fun and difficult drafting game. However, because it is difficult, bugs are all the more painful. I have a pet peeve that will result in an uninstall with me. That is at the end of a hard fought game, the program locking up with no option for save/reload and or continue. A game in which this can happen is a game in which the developer has not valued the time of their customer. Unless your implementation is bulletproof, you need the ability to save state. No save game in progress means, no ability to recover. So despite liking the gameplay, Age of Rivals has been uninstalled.

### 5/5 — Great game

*2025-05-06, version 3.25*

This game is awesome. I cannot wait for the sequel Age of Rivals 2: Bannerlands.

### 5/5 — Buy!!!!

*2025-04-02, version 3.25*

Wonderful, challenging game. Addicting! Endless possibilities. I’m a little disappointed they’ve stopped updating it, though, and thereby made the campaign obsolete.

### 5/5 — Amazing.

*2024-09-30, version 3.25*

I wish they would update and add more cards.

### 5/5 — Best card game strategy app I ever played

*2024-08-08*

I’ve been playing this game since the days of kongregate , flash game website…when it was free …. when I found out that it was mobile for my cell phone. I became ecstatic. I highly recommend this game. It is a true gem.

### 5/5 — Quick casual strategy 5/5

*2024-05-30, version 3.25*

Great game. Easy to pick up and play at any time. Played for many many hours when it was available on web, glad it’s now mobile. Oddly I enjoyed unlocking cards and miss the progression a bit, but I am grateful that you made the alternative to be… making all cards available? That’s generosity you don’t see often in games these days. Thanks.

### 5/5 — Great quick game

*2023-11-30, version 3.25*

Plays as described with no need to purchase anything else.

### 5/5 — Solid pvp strategy game

*2023-06-17, version 3.25*

This is a great game.
Unlike most mobile “card collector games” this one is fair and balanced. No micro transactions to give one player the advantage over the other. The strategies are diverse enough that each game feels different from the last. It’s well worth the modest price tag.

### 5/5 — Fun game

*2023-04-17, version 3.25*

Fun card game with lots of replayability.

### 5/5 — russian language

*2022-08-06*

Nice. Please add russian language!

### 5/5 — Actually..

*2022-02-06*

..really good game!
Deep deck building on the fly with interesting decisions. Can recommend.
