### 4/5 — Beautifully Crafted but some perspective issues

*2024-04-02, version 1.4.0*

This is a 3d take on a classic 2d plane/spaceship shooter. It is beautifully crafted, but I find the 3d perspective creates an issue when things come at you because they look like they will cover half the screen so you really have no idea where it will hit.

The movement is entirely by mouse, probably so that tablets can have almost identical movements. I would have preferred to move the character with keyboard.

The soundtrack seems to be heavily inspired by Queen, which is quite welcome.

Definitely worth trying.

### 2/5 — Looks great, iffy controls

*2023-12-15, version 1.4.0*

Looks Incredible, Truly Inspired, It Loos like Space Harrier doesnt really play like that though, maybe with a Joystick(Lol)/Contoller or even a Mouse but the default controls on My Macbook Air didnt really do it for Me, nice try though!

### 2/5 — Subpar

*2023-12-03, version 1.4.0*

The game is gorgeous, but the music is terrible and unfitting and the controls could be better, and unfortunately can’t be changed.

### 2/5 — The music throws me off so bad

*2023-03-12, version 1.4.0*

Why am I shooting lasers and stuff to what sounds like Queen’s bohemian rhapsody? The vibe is not there

### 4/5 — Cool concept and atmosphere

*2022-12-18*

Like a cross between Star Fox and Panzer Dragoon.

### 2/5 — Cool game but overly difficult to avoid damage

*2022-09-04*

I genuinely like this game! It’s just unfortunate that gameplay is ultimately frustrating. It’s quite a bit difficult to tell which way something that can hurt you is going since it moves in an hard-to-predict curve, and there’s a lot of room for error. So it feels like not getting hit is more of a luck thing than a skill thing.

Outside of that, great potential here.

### 5/5 — Fabulous, clever, beautiful

*2022-08-21, version 1.0.3*

Yu Suzuki’s games are about emotions, states of being.

It’s not-quite-Space Harrier, with not-quite-Queen soundtrack. Echoes of Seal and Kate Bush come through as you work with elegant swipes and frantic slashes. It’s like dreaming of an 80s arcade, a flashy one like the Crystal Rooms in Soho.

This is a game about nostalgia and graceful movement emerging from a head-on bullet hell.
It’s not for everyone- avoiding bullets is hard in this perspective, and the screen gets really full.
Like a Jeff Minter game, you end up relying on the sound because there’s just so much on screen.

And no, you can’t save your progress. You amass permanent upgrades and better weapons, which make the early levels much much easier, so you play those to build up health reserves to face the later baddies and bosses.

It’s old-school but not as harsh as the real thing, it’s a dream of a game.

If you don’t remember the 80s, this won’t provoke the central emotion of the game, but I hope you enjoy it.

If you can remember the 90s, do you have any idea where I was most of the time?

Xx

### 5/5 — Amazing graphics!

*2022-08-19*

Very good game for sure. Lots of replay value and the graphics are beautiful for a mobile game. Some people are commenting that the graphics are bad or like “PS1” , those people are probably children still in grade school.

### 5/5 — Panzer Dragoose

*2022-08-13, version 1.0.3*

Beautiful game, with an interesting control scheme.

### 2/5 — Why do I have to keep repeating level 1 when I already beat it?

*2022-08-02*

Fatal flaw. I hate the idea of completing something only to die in level 2 and not start back at level 2. If I am doing it “wrong” than that is still a fault of the game as this should be easy to figure out for someone with experience in games surely. I can’t stand games that do this — why would I want to play the SAME level over and over and over and over. Nahhhh to the trash bin you go. Good luck.

### 2/5 — Need upgrade

*2022-07-26, version 1.0.3*

Game is really good and music, gets a bit boring sometimes as I have to start all over again not game saved.
I would be great if they could do that

### 2/5 — Unfinished PS1 Style Game

*2022-07-19*

Decent touch controls on this shooter. Seems like a very indie title. The soundtrack for the game sounded like Queen at first, but it’s a singlet named Valensia. It’s repetitive, so after a level or two you’ll hear the same songs over and over. The rest of the game is repetitive too, very simple level design and boss battles one after the other. PlayStation 1 style graphics. Reminds of of the classic Bryce 3D software.
You can use points to change your avatar a bit or unlock upgrades.
I played about 4 stages. It doesn’t appear to have any story line, just an endless barrage of some enemies that shoot at you and big boss battles. There’s some lore if you dig deep into the menus, but by now I’m pretty bored of it and moving on.

### 3/5 — Game ok but music awful

*2022-07-10, version 1.0.2*

I like the game, it’s ok/good but the music drives me mad. It’s like a very bad copy of Queen and when I say bad I mean just terrible which means I cannot play the game.

### 5/5 — The Dark Souls of Mobile Arcade Shooters

*2022-07-08*

Air Twister is a game that feels satisfying once mastered. It took me awhile though. I bumbled and got stuck at the first three stages but once I figured out the controls the first six stages became a breeze. You can switch between two types of aiming, lock-on and manual aiming.

Each one affects the way you dodge the enemies. Lock-on is done by swiping at the enemies. Manual however is trickier. You have to hold one finger in place to stop moving and tap with the other to shoot. This is how I did it but there are other different ways to aim and shoot.

The controls are fun and challenging, it really is! You’ll know you mastered it when you can breeze through the first six stages. But after that the game ramps up and the real game begins.

### 4/5 — Bohemian Rhapsody?

*2022-07-08, version 1.0.2*

I can’t stop thinking that I’m listening to a Queen cover band when playing. That’s pretty cool though. Kinda fun game

### 3/5 — Fun little Space Harrier/Panzer Dragoon clone

*2022-07-06, version 1.0.2*

The great Yu Suzuki returns with...a mobile game. No question the man has worked on great things in the past and it's nice to see him return to Space Harrier after all these years. There's a little Panzer Dragoon in here too, although visually it has none of the flair, in fact it all looks a bit like a random grab-bag of Unreal Engine marketplace assets.

The music surprisingly is not classic arcade style FM, instead it's some sort of Queen knock off band and they sound great, if derivative. Honestly the music is the highlight here, it's fantastic.

From a gameplay perspective it's rather vague on a touchscreens but not much better on an Apple TV with a controller. The Apple TV version also runs really badly even on the latest ATV with a very unsteady frame rate. Also progress isn't saved, so you start over every time you load the game.

### 5/5 — Beautiful Game

*2022-07-05*

There are tons of skills to learn that make gameplay easier. It just takes some time. Using one finger to hold her in place while firing with the other works really well and most bosses die quickly if you tap them as fast as you can. I barely swipe anything after maxing out Lightning Chaser. The story of the game that explains the lore is earned piece by piece as you progress. Music is fantastic.

### 3/5 — Great…. At first

*2022-07-04, version 1.0.2*

Really liked this game to start with but have grown really tired of having to start from the beginning again and again. How can it not have a save point?? Unless I’m missing something.

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — What?

*2023-12-30, version 1.4.0*

By far one of the worst video games I have ever played in my life. What a waste of time

### 1/5 — Game is not progressive or unlockable

*2022-09-06*

repeatedly fails with graphics available on mac, which mine is not a cheap one(by their impossible standards of living). Another attempt by apple to give consumers something worth while - however it still fails. The worst part about investing in apple is the lack of functionality and extreme price point. Games like this don't even come close to complexity of most and still it is disappointing, as a basic arcade game. If all apple provides is crappy arcarde games, this is proof they cannot get it right. I only wish my windows systems had the ease of access of mac, otherwise this peice of junk would be gone. I suppose seeing it with apple music initially helped me agree to a higher price point, but it is games like these that destroy my confidence in these overpriced systems.

### 1/5 — In the great tradition of…

*2022-07-02, version 1.0.2*

Apple Arcade games that come with no explanation or instructions. The video promo shows flying around and shooting stuff, the real game is poking at the map screen. If I could only find a way to play the actual game, it looks fun.

Booooooooooooooooooo!

### 1/5 — Blame

*2022-06-30, version 1.0.2*

Generic forgettable fantasy drivel with bad controls and 20 year old graphics.

### 1/5 — Age rating is completely wrong

*2022-06-29, version 1.0.2*

This game is absolutely not suited for 4+. Please fix it

### 1/5 — Awful

*2022-06-28, version 1.0.2*

Boring and really stupid controls .
Played, deleted, moved on.

### 1/5 — No.

*2022-06-28, version 1.0.2*

Not it.

### 1/5 — Crashes with controller

*2022-06-27, version 1.0.2*

The game dumps me back to my home screen after the third level when playing with an Xbox controller on iOS 15.

### 1/5 — Crashing on M1 Mac

*2022-06-26, version 1.0.2*

Cant even get through the first level without it crashing.

### 1/5 — I expect more from Yu Suzuki

*2022-06-26, version 1.0.2*

This could be a half-decent Space Harrier clone if it weren’t for the controls. On iPhone at least, there’s no option for joystick controls and the default tap / swipe / drag setup is horrendous for a game of this type.

Story is non-sensical and level flow is pretty boring. Overall this is a skipper.

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — strong female character

*2024-04-13, version 1.4.0*

love that the main character is a strong women. Tired of games that have female action characters that are just created for men to oggle over. The game is very addictive and soundtrack is definitly inspired by Queen

### 5/5 — Legendary Arcade creator

*2024-04-05, version 1.4.0*

I came here because of a recent play through of Shenmue 3 - Yu Suzukis other recent video game - in which there was a mini game where you chop logs of wood. The music, the sound effects.. I forgot how fun and addictive he makes arcade style games. He’s literally a master at it and has an understanding of what makes it work.

So I gave this a shot and sure enough..hooked like a fish. 🎣

### 5/5 — One of the only reasons I do arcade.

*2023-10-21, version 1.4.0*

Pls just put this game up for sale.

### 5/5 — Must play

*2023-03-31, version 1.4.0*

Lovely 💕 game 🕹

### 5/5 — Great game, very original.

*2023-01-19, version 1.4.0*

This is a great game, good reason to have arcade.

### 5/5 — Panzer Dragoon + Valensia OST = 🤩

*2022-10-23, version 1.3.0*

I NEVER write reviews for mobile games but this will be the exception.

🎮Think of SEGA’s Panzer Dragoon- flying through the air sometimes on a mount firing at the enemies that come flying your way. The same beloved arcade feel but the controls can be funny on touch screen. I HIGHLY Recommend using a controller like I did, I promise you will enjoy the game much more.

👾Add in a skill-tree [not really “skill’s”, but a few cosmetics and extra HP which you will absolutely NEED to survive the end] and a banging soundtrack and you get this. I literally thought I was listening to music from Queen until I found the games soundtrack on Spotify.

🕹The graphics are nothing to do cartwheels over but the backgrounds are very pretty without being distracting. Enemy models are smooth and the bosses look pretty sweet. It’s everything you’d expect from an arcade game.

I loved everything about the game. If you liked Panzer D., Space Harrier, anything in that category I think you will love this [IF you use a controller!].
There is a sudden difficulty jump at stage 4 and by stage 7 the enemies will become a lot to deal with. I’d say this game is for somewhere between casuals and hardcores.

### 5/5 — A proper old school arcade game

*2022-09-29, version 1.2.0*

As a huge fan of Panzer Dragoon, Rez and Space Harrier this was a very welcome surprise.

Once you properly get the hang of the controls you realise just how well designed this is as a touch screen game. I doubt it would be as satisfying with a controller, but playing with touch screen is the real point of the gameplay.

Wonderfully wacky and imaginative visuals and a quirky addictive, soundtrack from (a very Queen-inspired) Valensia drives you on as you play (and replay) through the levels.

It is an arcade style game so there are no save points. The idea is that you learn more of the wave patterns with each play-through and get just that little bit further each time you play. This is the intentional style of the game, exactly like arcade games from the 80’s. You also get plenty of little rewards the more you play, and the more stars you collect, which help make later levels more manageable. You’ll be grateful of these upgrades as you progress as it really gets frantic in later levels.

It’s great to see a modern interpretation of 80’s Yu Suzuki classics. Very addictive whether regularly playing for a quick 10-15 minutes or more!

### 5/5 — New Space Harrier successor by its original studio!

*2022-09-18, version 1.1.0*

YES APPLE. GREAT DECISION. Superb graphics, actually works well on a touchscreen, so Japanese it hurts, in the best way possible. It’s a more mellow, trippy, thoughtful Space Harrier, by the studio who made the original. Score and upgrade system keeps you playing. Awesomely cheesy music which rips off queen and Material Girl Madonna. It’s nuts, like a lost Dreamcast classic. More like this! Arcade needs more creative, weird and wacky, actual arcade madness like this.

### 5/5 — What's not to love?

*2022-09-17, version 1.1.0*

Made by Yu Suzuki, the guy who made Space Harrier. It's Space Harrier, but a little more trippy, more slowed down, more score and wave-based. 70s fantasy landscapes and creatures which are just preposterous. Queen rip-off soundtrack, with a Material Girl rip-off score screen ditty. You ride a giant goose, what more could anyone want? Everything about this is nuts, hightly creative, and like nothing else on Apple Arcade. An experience to be savoured.

2 bad things - why on earth doesn't it save your progress? You have to begin from the start each time, this has to be changed. Also, the reticule gets lost in the action, a lot.

Sad to see a negative review here, this is leagues above most of the ex IAP games on the service.

### 5/5 — Yu Suzuki’s Arcade Legacy Continues!

*2022-08-27, version 1.1.0*

Yu Suzuki has done it agajn, as he brings back a video game type that has sorely been lacking in recent years - pure Arcade fun!

Taking inspiration from his own SEGA Classic “Space Harrier” and a little bit of Panzer Dragoon thrown in, this excellent fun new title from the mastermind himself is a joy to experience.

At first the game can feel a little difficult to progress beyond around Stage 6, but stick with it as you earn more stars and increase Princess Arch’s health and unlock different weapons. With a ton of replayability, game modes, a fantastic soundtrack from composer Valensia and an arcade experience that makes you want to keep returning, Air Twister receives full marks from me!

Here’s to more amazing gaming experiences from Yu Suzuki, and of course #LetsGetShenmue4!
